I wrote this in the other thread, thought I'd share my thoughts:

I don't intend to be argumentative, but I feel as though animated ultra violence is far more harmful to developing kids than realistic violence. The animated violence in cartoons doesn't depict the consequences of violent actions, it makes them attractive and innocent seeming. If you watch the movie "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" (highly recommended) Kevin Smith says that the movies that show the consequences of violence (Like Saving Private Ryan) should have lower ratings than movies that don't.

And further, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if information surfaced that shed light on the childhood abuse of the killer. I'm sorry to say this, but I hate him as much as anyone else who watches the news does, but we should try not to hate him, because it was his hatred that caused this very incident. I'm sad because I fear this will only spawn animosity toward Asian immigrants. We should all do our best to grieve for the dead students, without feeding hatred for their murderer. This tragedy should teach us to reach out to each other, not become obsessed with hatred as the killer so obviously did.
rereading this, I realized that i sound sympathetic to the murderer, which I certainly do not. And I believe everyone is always responsible for their actions, regardless of their history. But the fact is that he killed himself, and while directing hatred at him might be an easy way to forget our depression, it is much more responsible to accept that no matter how much hatred we feel toward him, nothing will undo the murders he committed.

I don't mean to chide the maker of this thread. I've just been thinking a lot about the ethics behind responding to violence with hatred. There have been times when I've wished that I could kill someone, and just an hour ago I was saying how angry it makes me that the murderer killed himself, so that the state couldn't. But terrorists like him obviously don't fear death enough, so the greatest punishment we can inflict upon them is indifference. It is far more painful to be ignored than hated. So as news stations fuel our national hatred with their horror stories about the disturbed youth who murdered 32 people, we grant this boy exactly the infamy that would fulfill all of his desires. Lets instead forget the killer, and try instead to remember the legacy of each of the innocent individual students, who most of us never met, but could easily have been one of our friends or relatives.

And not to be a preacher but don't be so harsh. I honestly wish that a white person did this, because the last thing we need in this country is more racial conflict. If I was Asian, I'd be damn worried that people would subconsciously associate me with the killer.

im not by any means a liberal person or a democrat or whatever, but if we had stricter gun laws this may not have happened. How a person can just go to a store with his green card and a drivers liscence and buy a gun is beyond me. and then 30 days later he is allowed to buy one more. Im not saying this would have prevented this from happening but it may have helped. Regardless this was a tragic event and i feel terrible for not only the families of the victims but also for the family of the shooter.

yea, it wasa misconception about 22, turns out there was actually 32 dead, which is horrible, I can't see the motive..

Turns out the shooter was a foreigner from Korea, who was at the time on an educational visa

The shooter was identified as a 23-year old Cho Seung-hui,[4] a South Korean national living in Virginia as a United States permanent resident. He arrived in the US with his family as an eight-year-old child in 1992. His permanent address is listed as Centreville, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C.[20]


Him visiting on an educational visa was just a rumor, he was a U.S. citizen therefore thats how he bought the guns legally.

I think a large part of it is because of how people treat one another. I've been there and seen it first hand. People are much more caring for their fellow human beings. They also have a deeply rooted system of family honor, and doing something such as this would bring such dishonor upon ones family it would be a horrible crime against their family and their ancestors. Their sense of morals are very strong over there which is something tha tmany people in this country are lacking.

An example I found particularly inspiring, i guess, anyway, I was talking to my second cousin who is Japanese, he has decent english so he was easy to talk to and was taking us aroung Japan. As we were traveling around the subway system, I saw a few people with the face/mouth mask things that doctors wear. I asked him why people wore those in Japan, was it because they were afraid of getting sick from other people? He said that that wasn't it at all. He said the reason that Japanese people wore face masks was because they had a cold or something, and out of respect for their fellow coworkers, human beings, whatever, they wore a mask so they would not get THEM sick and transfer their cold to anyone else. I thought that was pretty crazy, something I would never see here in America.

We studied school shootings (columbine, dawson college, ect)

People that do these have severe mental issues. They are often loners, been abused, introverts, and crave attention that was lacking in their childhood. They feel that doing this, will let thwm gain the recognition they crave, and die with everyone knowing who did this, and in their mind, thats the untimate goal.

It was said that he was a student at the school. He was asked to see a councelor about his very graphic writing.

He was just looking for an outlet, and, went about it the wrong way.
