is anyone here straightedge? like its gay cuz some of my friends are starting to really get into drinking, and i think its actually kinda gay just becuase, well, idk. has anyone else on here had friends like this or whatever?

Here in Reno its a gang recongnized by the reno police department almost a year ago because of all the shit that happens
Just face the fact that you claim to be in a queer gang if an actual gang member finds out that you claim and your not in the gang your done for so go to a xkillxwhitneyxdeadx concert with x's on your hand and rep edge and see what happens

i have plenty of friends that dont smoke and drink and i respect them completly i dont push them to try it neither but most of them make the choice to try it on there own so dont try to pin that shit on me too

First, straight edge is a way of life for me, not a group of friends or a gang. I listen to all sorts of music including straight edge punk.

Saying all kids claiming straight edge are in a gang is like saying:
"All Muslims are terrorists"
"All cokeheads are in a gang"
"All skiers smoke pot"
"All Americans are lazy"

I know. Man, i completely agree. Im straight edge. However i dont run around in a little gang with X on my hands and go beat up burnouts. This kid is oversimplifying the topic. Hes not asking your opinion, he is asking what to do. here is the answer.

Anything even associated with the term "straight edge"...is GAY. Seriously, if you don't want to drink, fine. If you don't use drugs, fine. You don't need to start/join some stupid, glorified social club to prove it.

All "straight edgers" are, is weak-minded idiots who can't make a choice to stay sober on their own, so they need some whack-ass "gang" to justify their decision.

And don't even get me started on the pussies who beat up drunk people. I have been a bouncer, and I know how easy it is to overwhelm a drunk person when you're sober, it's like fighting a 5 yr old. So for a group of these pansy's to blindside a drunk person and rat-pack him is nothing short of a coward.

Make your own decisions, you don't need to be associated with "something" to make them for you...

Hahaha, I didn't drink until I got to college, well, my dad made me a drink after a track meet once when I was in HS, and I had wine with dinner, but most of my drinking was done 1st quarter of college, and not so much since, except for the occasional night out every few months for a good reason with good friends. No more drinking to get drunk, not my bag.

Do what you want to do. If you don't feel like drinking/doing drugs, don't, if you do, don't drive or opperate heavy machinary.

did you not read any of my posts. straight edge is a way of life not a club or gang. its like saying to ski you must be on a team. and for the kid who made the comment about puberty, im 18 and made the decision when i was 15 and its not like ive never tried it before. ive been drunk several times and smoked to so fuck off.

yeah ive only drank once, thats it, i dont really have anything against it, i just see soooo many people who used to be cool turn into complete fags because all they ever do is drink or get high.
like a month ago this kid at my school crashed his car, and he had me drive him to the gas station, i didnt ask why cause i figured he would be getting picked up or something, but instead he bought a pack of cigarettes and had me wait on the side of the road while he smoked.
seeing people like that who dont do anything or dont have any fun really turn me away from stuff like that.

A way of life??? Please. "Straight edge" began out of an old Minor Threat song. If you really believe that, why do you need a term to define you as a person? Are you really that lost that you need to associate yourself with something, something that truly makes no sense, just to solidify your sense of worth?

Do you see anyone who uses alcohol identify themselves as "drinkers" and drawing Bud Light labels on their hands to prove it? No, you don't. Because it's stupid.

You'll be hard pressed to convince me there is a positive to all the sanctimonious bullshit that is associated with "straight edgers" and their warped view of reality.

you talk about straight edge kids being violent, last time i fought someone was 6 years ago and i kicked the kids ass for fucking with me. i havent fought anyone since but i would kick your ass if the opportunity came about.

i dont know why you try to make all straight edge kids the same. claiming straight edge is just like claiming vegetarian it is a way of life and and a set of values i dont see what the fuck is so bad about that!

No i dont see anyone that drinks as "drinkers" as long as its not an addiction. Hell, I even have a few every now and again. Its not like something I crave so Im fine with it.

I dont give a shit what I can and cant prove to you. But one solid fact is that with whatever you chose to do with your life there will be bad shit associated with it and people will stereotype you.

im straight edge, i dont have gay values or any of that stupid shit, i just can have more fun without drinking and smoking than with it, i get so sick of seeing my friends turn into fags cause of drinking and shit, they say "weed isnt bad, i dont do it that much, it wont take over my life" then two years later they are too damn boring to ski anymore, and too boring to even go outside, all they want to do is sit around drinking cause they dont know how to have actual fun, its happened to three of my good friends.
i guess if your definition of fun is sitting around drinking smoking and barfing then thats fine. but i like to get outside and do stuff.

Thats cool my comment wasn't directed at you.  You have tried it and you have determined that it's not for you.  I respect that.  My comment is directed at the ones that judge before they even know a damn thing about it.  It is one thing to make a decision based on personal experience and another to base it on propaganda.  Also, you act like ANYONE that smokes a little pot will automatically try harder drugs and throw their lives away.  I have been smoking weed for 3 years and still haven't touched a synthetic drug. and I know many others that can say the same.   Weed is probably a bad idea if you are a weak person that doesn't know where to draw the line, but for some, it can be easily controlled.

If you're concerned that doing something will challenge your integrity, mostly to yourself and the way you see yourself (not really according to the views of others), then simply don't do it. It doesn't necessarily require experience to know if you like it or want it, especially if you already see what your friends are doing as something that you don't really want to partake in. And really, you aren't missing on a whole lot. I don't consider myself straight edge (because why bother?), but I have friends that smoke all the time, and I just don't want to do it. Thats their decision, and that's mine, so I'll spend just as much time with them as I would otherwise; it doesn't really even phase any of us.

Drinking, for me, is an aspect that I'm not really a fan of. Well, drinking to get drunk. You can drink to enjoy it, or for social context, what have you, and not get drunk or really even feel it. That's one of the reason's I don't do any drugs, because each time is meant to have an affect, and well, not for me. But having a nice glass of hennessy, champagne, wine at dinner, or a nice cocktail when talking with friends of old and new, dining, whatever, can be a nice way to go.

That's how I feel.  I don't drink, but if I did, I don't think I'd do it to get drunk.  It would be like one drink, just for the social aspect of it.  Getting I am not the least bit interested in getting "trashed".  What's the point?  I have fun/am content without drinking so why change that?  It's just not for me.

Ya i'm straight edge it pisses me off when people become straight edge just because all their friends are. Or because they want to be violent. Straight edge is a way of life. But some kids take it way too far and got it recionized as a gang in some cities it's those kids that give straight edge a bad name.

ok i just read a little more of the thread. chill guys, he wasnt talking about the gang or "true". he just wants to know about friends experimenting with drugs or alcohol.

i think i relate to you on this. back like in freshman/kinda sophomore year some of my friends were trying drinking. i and like most of my other friends thought it was a bad scence and didnt get involved. as the years progress, itll become more common, and itll be time to try it (IF YOU WANT TO. you DO have a choice. you can still party/be cool). it gets a LOT more common with people doing it near the end of high school/college. perceptions of it will change, and youll want to try it. you should want to try it, its natural to want to, some would say its part of high school. if you try it and like it, keep doing it.

i dont know how old you are, so im just assuming your in middle/early high school. if im wrong, i apologize

you know i have not read this whole thread but i use to be edge in high school and im glad i was, i was also very involved in the music scene in the Denver and Colorado springs. looking back on it i think that it made my experience in high school a little better, it kept me form doing things that i would regret later on in life. its something i look back on with fondness and will for the rest of my life. now that im at college though i feel like it just does not fit with the social aspect here. there is nothing wrong with being edge guys, i know plenty of really cool edge kids and there not dicks about it, one of my best friends is edge, he is also a member of a major hardcore metal band right now. Aaron looks at it from the standpoint of it keeps him focused on his music, it keeps him focused on his job. there is nothing wrong with that i think. in fact, i think its awesome that he is that committed to the music that he is making.

Ya, I wasnt trying to be hostile either. I know most people dont move on to harder stuff, in fact most dont. In the last 4-5 years I have watched 3 of my close friends and 3 girls i was dating move on to other stuff or just simply quit doing everything except smoking/drinking. I guess thats kind of why I feel affected so much by it.
