Ski Games

Well, it seems there have been a recent interest in computer skiing games with the improvment of DNA spin. Well, it got me thinking. We need a game made by skiers based on suggestions and input from people on here. The past few weeks iv been attempting to put something together. This however, is not something that will be done in a week or two, it is an on-going project.

Let me get to the point! I need your suggestions and input for what would want to see in a game. Understand that i have limits and am not a professional developer, so keep them realistic!

And for those that are interested in this sort of thing, this is how i am working on making it (note: this is a bunch of technical blah):

-It will be delivered in either a stand alone projector or be web based.

-This will be a realtime 3d interactive game

-The game greation will be based in 3ds and Director 3d. Models will be made in 3ds and exported for development in director with .W3D

-If you want to try and create something similar, you will need Reactor for 3Dmax. Physics are based on the Reactor/HavoK physics engine, that is available in maya, 3ds and director, alowing scenes with havok properties to be interchange. (If you want a copy of Havok/Reactor for max, i can send you a copy)

Any one who has experience in any of this who would like to give me suggestions, assistance, that would be great.

^^ whoops.. I read wrong you are right.. also I do't kno if I can convert to 3ds or autocad but I can open them in gmax so maybe they are convertable..

i'll have more pics of my park progress either 2nite or 2morrow afternoon.....

but i have a 40' rainbowrail and a 35'ish straight to down to straight kink box......

since it follows physics, some unrealistic jumps and rails would be interesting... but for the most part, it would be sick if a real park from this year could be modeled, not parkasoaurus or superpark, but a park that we all skied this year.

Good to see all the enthusiasm, but what do you guys plan on doing with all these things your making? Its not as simple as box modeling some basic shapes and then all of a sudden It can be a part of a game. Its a bit more complex than that. It might be nice eye candy, but it cant do anything.

If you guys plan on doing anything with that stuff, your going to need lots of things. You'll need 3dsmax, director studio 8.5, w3d exporter ,Reactor and lingo coding skills. I wish it was a simple as modeling a simple object and using it in a game, but unfortunately it is not. I would like to, however use your ideas for inspitration to add to the final product. Thanks for the enthusiasm!

mauii... couldn't you somehow make models like in most games that are seperate, so they are easily editable? or could we send you our models for you to implement... so that it's less work for you?

unfortunately i cant make them seperate. Since im using shockwave to deliver the content, and shockwave is not designed to be able have multiple finished files. Its is designed to be a single file to be placed on a server or to stand alone. So the drawback is that everything has to go together before the thing is outputted and finalized.

And mamothpunks, that is quite sexy!

ok, why shockwave? can't it just be an .exe? or is that so that it's mac compatible? (does shockwave work on macs?)

i cant make the game in whatever format i want. Unfotunatelyy, i cant just decide to make in another language. Executable files (exe) are just things that run a set of imbedded processes. Basically, The finished game will be an exe, but it is still made in shockwave.

hmm... Would there be any way to make maps separate instead of an editor included? Just work on the editor later. Anyways, different maps that you could download would be nice, just like make a directory to drop them in... just an idea for later versions or something.

^^ he just said that he can't use them. it all has to be programmed in one where he can set the physics/location etc. (atleast thats what I understood of it)

wait, ryan are you using 3ds or gmax?
i know nothing about either, but in AutoCAD, you add textures through a menu setup...... look thru the menus in your program, and look for textures or mapping.... that's usually how it works

Im using 3ds max.
I can get to the material editor, and I select the bitmap but it wont let me put it on the snow. Does it have to be editable mesh, or polygon or something?
