What do you guys think about college athletes being required to work toward a degree while attending college and playing their sport?

Depends, did they get in on a sports scholarship or an academic one?

college athetes. its basically a student athlete. colleges are schools. the primary purpose for an athlete may be to play sports, but the primary purpose for a college/university is education, so... yea. just a small view of how i see it

They go to college, they should be EXPECTED to get a degree at the same time.

I'm pretty sure you have to take classes while being a college student athlete...which would mean that you're "TRYING" to get a degree, but it doesn't mean you will.

there is no debate, they ARE going to school and attending classes which technically means they are working towards a degree
there's nothing to discuss...maybe "should all college athletes COMPLETE a degree"

i am a university athlete and let me just say this should not even be a debate. For starters a college is a academic institution. You go there for education and to get a piece of paper at the end that says youve been educated enough in an academic field. What you do outside of your academics is extra-curricular activities, and your own business. That is all on the side of whatever academic program you are in. It doesnt matter if you are on a full scholarship for sports and have piss poor marks. Yes the university is using you for their profit, because they believe that with you on their team, the team will be better and fans will come to watch you play. But still their job is an academic institution, they must provide that at least on an even basis as calling themselves a business. Also if they were giving out scholarships for athletes and didnt make them go to class their sole focus would be an athlete and not a student. That would make them a professional. College players... for most sports... not mine though... have to be amateurs, and by doing that there would be no difference between the NCAA or CIS and professional leagues around the world. Another point is that, for all those athletes on university or college teams in general 99% do not turn pro. very similar stat also to those who are given full sports scholarships. Most of them come in thinking they have a shot at the pros too. If they werent forced to stick with academics, a lot of these students would drop off the face of the earth after their eligibility limits expire. Colleges must prepare there students for a successful life and career upon graduating, therefore if academics werent required they would fail miserably. This is really a non-debate, shouldnt even be argued as far im concerned.

i completely agree. I'm also a college athlete, and my school doesn't give athletic scholarships so it isn't as much a deal here as in big state schools, but still. It is college. It isn't a team with school on the side, its school with a team on teh side. School comes first.

in canada you cant get sports scholarships purely on an athletic basis, you have to have really good academics, with that being said, the only place to get a scholarship in my sport in north america is in ivy league schools because its that underground, so you have to have ridiculous academics for it too, so athletic scholarships in canada and in my sport arent a big deal.

by the way what sport do you play? Ivy league schools aren't allowed to flat out give athletic scholarships, but they can offer good financial aid packages. But, no athletic scholarships

I'm a college athlete and lets put it this way: If you do bad at school, then you WILL NOT last on the team...They don't put up with it. They call it Student athlete for a reason. Because if you aren't a student then you aren't an athelete
