Homemade Urban skis: Part 2 of 3 *video

Last night I pressed my second urban ski and today i finished it. The edge is only around the tip and tail of each ski and approximately the middle 5 ft are edgeless. Im hoping that this will cause a smoother grindage factor. They are 183 cm and 115-80-115, have a maple core, ptex sidewalls, and 3 layers of 22 0z triaxial fiberglass. Watch the video and enjoy.

Update 3 will include hand drawn graphics by the one and only dweezileast. Ill test them out at a railjam this saturday and possibly some urban and throw the footy all up in here.

DUDE THAT IS SO COOL. paint your skis super crazy colors . just grab a whole bunch of fluorescent colors and splatter it all over the ski.

holy fuck that is awesome. those are sexy skis too, i think the first pair i would keep forever and just look at them. if the cost isnt ridiculous, i would seriously consider doing that

i would feel so proud, riding on my own skis, but did you get permission from J-Lev to make a perfectly symmetrical ski, i hear he is bitchy about that sutff

oh yeah, for those that dont know www.skibuilders.com is basically everything you need to know on the subject. the initial cost of building the press is pretty high and depending on how many tools you need to buy that can get pretty pricey as well. I think we spent about $1500 for everything to get started (we had to buy a lot of tools) but im fairly confident that you could get off the ground for half that or less. Now it costs $100 - $150 per pair depending on materials.

what if you have all the tools? how much was the contruction of the actual press? and whioch one did you use? vaccuum? clamp?

hell yea bro! so sick to see people really gettin into buildin thier own stuff. im leaving for our shop an hour away in a few hrs after i get outt class. we are putting the finishing touches on our press/system this weekend, and shuld get our first few pairs out next weekend or so. PROPS!!

if your familar with longboard skateboarding, theres a HUGE community of people who build and ride thier own stuff (myself included) exclusivly. same way in surfing and shit. would love to see skiing go that way.

Bingo.  that's one really great thing about both surfing and longboarding.  although i haven't gotten to participate in making my own longboard or shaping my own surfboard,  i love how pretty much any normal person can just use their imagination and design something to their exact specifications.  it would be really sick if this started to expand more to skiing, but i think not as many people would be interested just because it seems a little harder/more expensive.

can you differ the size of ski with out having to make more then one press
is there like a layout you use or what
cuz if you could make diffrent shapes sizes i will so want to make one

I beleive the shape of the skis is determined by wood pieces so if you make less wood peices and a different shape then yes. Cal you wanna verify this?

if you are talking about the width of the ski you just make new templates for each ski. for example i have a base template that is 135-105-125 and one that is 110-80-110. as for changing the legnth of the ski, you needd to adjust your mold. the mold has 3 parts: a tip, the camber or mid section, and the tail. In our press these pieces are held together at each end with a bolt that runs all the way across the mold. you would need to change the location of this bolt on the midesction to change the legnth of the ski. im not sure if i explained that adequately but go to WWW.SKIBUILDERS.COM and read the complete tutorial that they have. it has pictures and is ver well written.
