Me and a friend are planning to head down to mount hood for a week or two in the summer. Unfortunately, we can't afford camp, so we'd just be sessioning the public park. We have a couple problems though. We need to do it on a super low budget, and ideally would be staying in hostels or camping. However, since I'm 16 and my friend is 18, we can't rent a cheap car and live out of it etc, so if we stay at a hostel, we have no way to get to the mountain. Driving to Hood isn't feasible since we live in New England, and gas would probably be several times the price of a plane ticket. I know lots of people go to hood every summer and do similar things, does anyone have any suggestions?
not really a hostel in govy, but hitching from there up to the hill is non problem. get to govy with a big tent... stay at the airfield... bum like the rest of the bums do... and theres plenty of bums in govy
I'd just hitchhike from Government Camp every morning. There are tons of cool kids who come from all over the country to ride HOod in the summer and most of them are more than willing to give a like minded individual a ride up the hill. My only question is how do you plan on getting from Portland to Hood in the first place? And as far as the sleeping arrangment there aren't any hostel in Govy. Just camp out where ever you can find a spot. There are all these little camping spots all over the place. Just make sure you're hidden. Don't bother sleeping at Forest Service campsites. They'll charge you like $10-15 a night.
me and my friend can both drive, but from a couple of minutes of online research it looks like you need to be at least 21 to rent any car, and you get fucked with surcharges if you're under 25.
i would be fine with hitchhiking etc, but i need some way to convince my parents it's a legit trip. They would be fine with me camping, but i need to figure something out to atleast get from portland to govy.
yeah, after looking at mapquest, driving might be an option, but it'd be a bitch. 3000 miles each way, 3 days of driving each way if we had people driving 2/3s of the time, and depending on gas it could be really expensive, basically, if we drove, we'd have to miss at least 3 weeks of work to make it worthwhile. regardless, it's skiing in the summer, and i would do pretty much anything for that.
