i'm also buying some 2003 1080, and also have problems on deciding betwen 171 and 181. People had told me(maybe reading them by yourself would be better, just go for the message i post that sais problems with the size)different things, but i think that im getting the 181 cuz i think i'll get used to the length in the jumps.and also i've heard that for landing and for doing some mountain they are better if they are longer. anyway i think it's all in what use are you gonna give them. pure pipe 171, pure mountain 181, 50/50 don't really know

I'm 5'11 156 lbs or so. I ski on 180s. they don't seem long to me at all. so far I am 100% park, because I havn't goten to the mountains yet. The longer theh ski, the more stable it generally is.

if you're 5'10 and plan on riding 50/50 then get the 181 FOR SURE. the 171's would be useless in deep snow if you're that tall. I rode 185 pocket rockets in the park last season and hand no problems throwing them around, so you shouldn't have any probles with the 181s.

I will definantely dissagree.......strongly disagree. Why would you go with a longer ski if you don't have to. Consider that the 1080 is 84 at the waist. That's a pretty decent size and unless you count on growing a ton or landing unbeleivebly large airs your crazy for going with the 181, in my opinion. I ski the Pocket Rocket in a 175 and 6' 180lbs. You may think I'm nuts but unless you're carving turns at 40+ mph in crud you don't NEED a ski that big.

now i'm a little confused... let me rephrase some of the things i'm looking for in the 1080... i am about 5'11 160 lbs, i do about 60/40 all mountain / park riding. I do about 5 days of eastern skiing a year (school in dc doesn't isn't helping this out) and about 15 days out west. I enjoy cruising groomers, hitting up the park, working my knees out in moguls and tearing it up in the backcountry. i just wish salomon made a 175 1080! any more advice would be great. im just having trouble deciding due to conflicting advice. thanks again guys.

As I said before I am roughly your size, and ski the 180 concepts. I probably would have gone with the 181 1080s if I had found a better deal on them. although you would probably still be fine with the 171s.my friend has them and skis the entire mountain on them just fine, who is only slightly smaller than I.

I had this same problem a month ago. I am 5'10' 180 and I got the 181, and i am so happy w/ them. i ski 60/40 all mtn/park as well. i knew i could handle the 181 for all mtn but was worried about the length, DON'T, they are so light and a little more progressively (forward) mounted than last years, these two things make them very easy to spin. i am not very a experienced park skier and my first time out this year I had no problem at all spinning them, of course I was used to spinning some 185 K2 fours. seriously though, if you are a descent skier you will have no problem getting used to the longer pair. I'm sure either one would be fine, but for me wanting something that could handle high speed carving, pow, and also go to the park if i wanted the 181 is pefect. hope this helps. they are awesome skis, seriously, you can't go wrong w/ either.

if you think you might grow I would go with the 181, if you think you're gonna stay the same weight go with the 171..that's what I would do. I would think they're wide enough at 171 to support your weight in deep, but really you're border line. The guy I ski with is about youre weight and his all mountain ski is a 177. I don't think you can go wrong with either. People are making valid points to go up to the 181, but I don't think it's necessary.

yea i agree, with what all these people have to say. If ur a good skier looking to spend 50/50 time park all mountain, go for the 181. Im 6'1' 195 and skiing 185 twintips, im 50/50 park all mountain also, so yea dude , definately go with the 181. enjoy!

More-than-4-times-bummed-up-the-ass is an idiot one of the best skiers in the world... Jon Olson is 5'10'' and 154 and skis on the 181 MadTrix... obviously go with them.
Everyone else seems to be smart enough to realize that people who ski on short skis are pussies. Remember if it is a twin-tip it's skis like 5-8cm shorter that a normal ski (181 will feel about 175) because the rear tip doesn't touch the snow.

Whistlerman- I noticed you level of coolness is 'insane'. Get a life, get off your computer, and go enjoy the terrain that's in your backyard. I hope you enjoy your life being a prick....but you MUST be a GOD skier, because you ski on longer skis. Grow up.

Just thought Id chime in, I was in the same boat as you 3wks back, ski 60/40 park out west (5'11' 155lbs) so I went with the 181s. Its not incribly different in the park, no its not as easy to spin as it was with my 169 01' 1080s but I can still spin 540s off smaller tables. As for skiing off piste and what not, they rule, I wouldnt want to ski a 171 back there at all. the 181 is sweet.

To be perfectly honest when riding the mtn you won't know the difference between the 171 and the 181 (its only like 5cm extra on either side which is 2 inches) similarly in the park you won't really notice to much of a difference.
Ski length is now determined on skiing ability and power NOT HEIGHT!! thus weight is the all important factor!! at 160lbs your light enough to ride the 171 so why sacrifice mobility of a shorter ski?? (especially if you like riding trees)
But having said that go with the 181s as riding a 'longer twin' is the 'cool' thing to do now, wanting to riding sticks on the opposite end of the scale as skiboards is also understandable.
Basically either ski will perform for you just as good the other, so pick the one with the best graphics. I would go the 171 as i think the white/silver color is awesome
