Thats right kids. If shop owners don't wake up and smell the coffee, skiing is going down.

Shop Owners: Take a cue from skating, surfing, and snowboarding. Skiing needs a lifestyle aspect to survive and your shops need to push it. And no, the current practice of selling one boring t-shirt from each company isn't going to cut it. You need massive influx of softgoods, the shit will keep your buisness running in the off season. DO IT.

There is a bottle kneck in the sport. Kids want the lifestyle. There are more than enough new companies to deliver what kids want, the only problem left is... RETAILERS JUST DON'T GET IT!

well said. I also think that people need to start supporting the independant companies more than the big corporate ones, because the money goes directly into our sport and will help push it, and not into some company that throws it into R&D for race skis and tons of other shit.

thats totaly true but i think line is the only company that make decent soft goods like there I AM A SKIER shirt that thing is sweet and there zip up hoodie that just says line thats tight all the other ski companys just need to put there logo's on different stuff that would be sweet

agreed but look at how many more people surf skateboard and snowboard they have a much larger demand because those sports are bigger then skiing and they're a lot more poser skateboarders then they're skiers because no one wants to buy "I am a Skier" shirt they want the DC shoes shirt because it is more popular. I may be way off thats just how i see things at the moment

I dunno about you guys but I like the size the ski industry is cause if it grows too big like Skateboarding then the professional industry is gonna get funkey cause theres gonna be more skier, meaning more ams and rookies and pros and if someone asks you what you do and you're all like "Im a skier" they're gonna think "oh just another skier trying to be cool. that's how it already is with guitar and skating.

Siver makes jeans and stuff, but idk if i'd buy it. Nobody in my area even sells siver stuff. I'm like my shop sells some orage stuff at the maximum retail price (i don't buy it). I'll be straight up honost i'm a little preppy, and i'd have a hard time wearing any thug looking stuff like T-hall off the slopes.

its true though...if more ski shops don't step up to the plate, than kids will continue flocking to snowboard/skate shops that cater to their lifestyle to buy these kind of products. i know i do. we also need more SKI companies to help push this, and to follow the lead of Siver Cartel, Armada, 4FRNT, Jiberish, etc (that are making cool goods) to fuel the movement. A lot of ski shops are slowly killing themselves and don't realize it.

I'm glad this point was brought up, cause its important to the health of the sport, in my opinion.

well...the competition that benefits from this, and replaces ski shops are SNOWBOARD and SKATE shops, not enough "core" ski shops are actually filling that new market void.
This hurts the ski economy, because this industry benefiting doesnt reinvest in us, they just reap the cash from our consumers. Its symbiotic, when shops and companies get hurt by this market, than it will impact the skier in some form or another in the end.

And say what you want about style and consumerism, but it exists, and it helps drive the sport and the lifestlye that goes hand in hand with it.

not to say there arent shops out there like D-Structure and Jibij that are helping the sport, and bringing us what we need. They need to be supported, cause where your dollar goes matters. On the other hand when ski companies and shops dont have what we are looking for, than our money will go elsewhere.

i agree as well, and i also agree that the "I Am a SKier " shirts suck, they need to be original and fucking crazy. serioulsy, there are so many fuckign lcothing companies these days, the clothes need to have somethign that sets them apart from everyoen elses. armada makes some sick ass fucking shirts and it makes me want them like a anorexic chick wants to not eat.

it is the consumer that will be the downfall of this sport. even if there's a sweet shop in town kids still go wherever the best bargin is because kids are cheap. this usually happens to be the big chains because they have the biggest orders and get the biggest discounts. until people fully realize that it does matter where they spend their money, nothing will change.

my local skate shop has this problem. ski companies have this problem. pretty much every sport has this problem.

^skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding have way bigger consumer bases than freeskiing. especially skateboarding considering it's a year round thing and it's not as expensive to get into as skiing. and pop culture has also helped skateboarding and surf culture along with stores like pac sun and what not. i've seen 14 year-old girls who have never even been on a skateboard spend a lot of money there because it's "hip".

the problem stems from the fact that most ski shops are owned and run by 60 year old men who still think racing is the future of skiing. true, racing skis still bring in the cash, but what happens when the baby boomers get too old and decrepit to ski and our generation grows older and has more buying power? we're certainly not going to put our kids (god forbid i ever have any) in racing programs but rather in the park. freeskiing will grow but i think the shop-side of things will be the last to follow.

You are right about the 60 year old men.

You further prove my point in your first paragraph as well... true, they have a bigger consumer base. But you need to look at the reason WHY they have a bigger consumer base.

Its becase people BUY INTO THE LIFESTYLE of the sport, like you said, people do it cause its hip. SKIING HAS NO LIFESTYLE aspect to the sport, largly in part to retailers unwillingness to sell soft goods, and lifestyle based products. People have nothing to buy into, some slob in Nebraska isn't going to connect with an "I AM A SKIER" tee shirt.

you walk into a surf shop and its a cool relaxed place, stocked full of cool shit. It feels like somthing you'd want to be a part of even if you aren't a surfer.

You walk into a ski shop and you have some old guy trying to ram a 10 pound plastic boot down your throat.

yeah i joined this sport to be original so i dont care what anyone else thinks ill continue to ski when noone likes it too all i need is a place to buy them so i guess a place to buy them from would be nice

i see your points, and they're very valid, but also retailers think about the demads of consumers. if there isn't that big of a demand for lifestyle products from the small population of us freeskiers then retailers are not going to invest that money into something they might not sell. it's risky and generally big chains don't like to take risks.
i think this has a direct correlation with the amount and type of media coverage our sport gets compared to say, skateboarding or snowboarding. also the image conveyed by skiing to the general public is still that of a guy in spandex chasing gates. it's not exactly what one would call "cool". i suppose the x-games are helping to change this, but very slowly.
many things need to change before we see more chill shops pop up but, like you, i'll be glad when that day arrives.

Skateboarding was doing fine before their soft goods went mainstream. A sport doesn't go the way of skiboarding just because the soft goods don't sell. What would this downfall of skiing look like, anyways? Do you dream of a day when professional skiers, too, can say "Dude!" at the end of a Nestea ad. Is that what a thriving sport looks like?
