think you respect skiing?

I wonder if anyone is as upset with skiing as I am. I realize as everyone else does that it is at the highest point it ever has been, but I wish to pose a question: is skiing skiin, or is it snowboarding on skis? I tweak grabs, I don't ski like a gorilla or mike nick or tanner hall or a snowboarder. I ski because I am a skier, and that is what seperates us from snowboarders. Why try to be a snowboarder on skis, just start snowboarding, the thing that seperates us from snowboarding is the ability to tweak the crist out of grabs and style two skis instead of one board. Skiers like tanner are making skis look like a snowboard, and that is fine, but nutt up. I think everyone should take a good look at skiing ,and realize where it is going. Look at any video from this year, how many tweaked out tail grabs do you see, just about none. Everyone is doing subtle grabs and that is fine, but skiing needs to get back to our roots. Not pink spandex and daffys but for god sakes, tweak your grab and be happy you are a skier not hoping to ski like a snowboarder. If we hope to be snowboarders where is this sport gonna go?
just some thoughts but I hope skiing doesn't become snowboarding because I love skiing, and I respect snowboarding for what it is, but I am a fuckin skier and I god damn it I ski.

I totaly disagree with you. I think non-tweaked grabs look ten times better than out of control tweaked tails. I hope someday skiing becomes half of what snowboarding has become. Tanner is doing exactly what the sport needs. It looks so relaxed rather than all flaily and ugly. I think you get what im trying to say. Relaxed safetys will always look smoother than what you want.


I thought the skis made you good. I got the skis and it turned out I was wrong. It must be the clothes.

The bottom line here is that skiing is skiing no matter what. It is all about style. Within the sport there are many different styles, all of which look sweet in their own aspects and require different skills. I love to see slow smooth safety 7's, but I also love to see huge tweaked out tail's of big drops. It is all about style and doing diff grabs and tweakin them or not is what makes your style.
'only 2 good things come to Michigan State (and Michigan in general).

I totally disagree with you. Let skiing take its own course, we shouldn't be on the internet preaching what skiing is and isn't. Its all about natural progression. So Tanner wants to look like a snowboarder good for him, he created his own skiing style, which some care to mimmick and others don't. Then there is Jon Olsson and he hates this new 'monkey' style and others choose to mimick his style. Then is another group of people creating thier own, unique style. We should all be out there taking little bits from others and taking little bits of ourselves to our skiing. We shouldn't being bitching and trying to shape where skiing is going, it will all work itself out!

ok, i'll be the first (well, i only read like less than half of the replies, so i might not be the first) to say - i want to be a snowboarder on skis. there i said it.

snowboarders look better in the air (on some tricks), they are smoother (take into respect how big they go and throw down huge tricks with little movement), they do way cooler jibs, and they get more money... and probably more chicks... oh, and more respect from the general public.

Skiing is skiing and snowboarding it snowboarding. they as sports should stay seperate. what I can't stand is all this shit of one makeing fun of another. ok so skiboarding is a little wussy but I'm not gonna go to a skiboard site just to diss on them or anything like that. whats more a lot of snowboarders compliment skiing because they recognoise that it is harder. some of them even say that skiing tricks look cooler

everyone is getting to concerened about the whole image of skiing/snowboarding, it seems that you have to look a certain way or ski a certain way to be cool. To me thats how skiing is turning into snowboarding, not because we are trying to use thier style but we want that image. I hate that image, most snowboarders i know and skiers too they put down each others sport because of how it looks, who cares how it looks just do it.

My God, as I scroll down this post, the only words I see are 'faggot, fuck, suck, bitch... etc.' How old are you guys anyways? Don't you have to be 13 to join the site? He has a great point, and one that I agree with. Lay off him. His post sticks out over all of your posts because of the fact that he intellgently put his point out in the open. This site is disgusting in the fact that nobody can have an opinion about anything.

If I were to post anything negative about, Tanner Hall, Armada, Line, Whistler, Marijuana, whatever, I'd get flamed and called gay about 20 different ways. I'm so tired of reading an intellgent post, and seeing it flamed by people who are 'True to the Movement'. Heres a shocker, you idiots arent 'True' to anything. Skiing was always struggling to be accepted into the action sports world, and now you guys won't accept the different aspects of the sport, how do you expect the mainstream world to accept us, if we can't even talk to each other without shit like this. Progression is developing style, do we really want to follow some cookie cutter layout that the leaders of the sport are doing? Isn't progression about pushing the sport, developing different styles, having each person follow one trend stifles the growth of the sport. Do you really want this to turn into a pseudo-FIS type setup, where judges only award the 'style of the moment' at competitions? Or do we really want this sport to be about what it was MEANT to be about, free expression of ones own style. After all, isn't that what the 'Movement' sought to bring about?

My only point about bringing this up was to alert people to this sense of urgency I feel we need right now. I am involved in the industry and I am alarmed at the acceptance of these views and actually hearing skiers say that snowboarding is better. Its fine that you feel that way but why would you bother skiing? I think all styles are important I just feel that tanner's motivation for his style is snowboarding, and that is where I see the problem, not in the fact that it is different. Being 'true to the movemnet' means being true to skiing. Do what you want and ski how it makes you happy but don't sell yourself out just to look cool. If you guys can ski the way you truly wanted to and were unconcerned with looking like a monkey or dressing like Jay Z you would probably have a much better time.

But your question was do you respect skiing - yes, I do. I have the utmost respect for skiing, its long history, its place in many cultures, and the long path that has got it to where it is today: A highly diverse sport with many facets. I have been on skis since I was 2. I tried snowboarding, but I cant do it, I'm just too used to facing forward. But aside from my love and respect for skiing, I try to borrow a lot of the fluidity and subtlety of snowboarding to my skiing.
Fat shaped skis would be years down the line of 'natural progression' if snowboarding hadn't have been the catylist it is. 'Free Expression' wouldn't be what it is today if snowboarders hadn't demanded the arena that is the terrain park.

I try to ski like a snowboarder. But I will never BECOME a snowboarder so long as I am wearing 2 planks and carrying those bloddy pole things.

I guess what I do not understand is why you would want to ski like a snowboarder, why don't you just snowboard, because you don't have the skill?, then quit. Saying you want to ski like a snowboarder is like saying you want to play basketball like a soccer player. It makes no sense, and it shows that you don't value the ideals about skiing that seperate it from snowboarding. I agree that snowboarding should get a lot of credit for making tools available for us to use to further skiing's progression, but that doesn't mean I want to emulate snowboarding with the way in which I ski. If you are a skier trying to ski like a snowboarder you're not a skier, you're a poser.

I think just about everyone took me dead wrong. I love skiing, theres nothing i would rather be doing. But, in general snowboarding is soo much ahead of us right now. Not necessarily the pros, but just in general. When the AVERAGE person thinks skier they automatically either think racing or fag. but when you see a snowboarder you automatically think jibs and such. That is what needs to be changed in skiing. I also think that we're doing a damn good job at it but we still have a ways to go.
