GAH! ACL surgery, what to do?

option 1: do not have surgery, wear a brace anytime I ski or bike or anything, but if knee ever gets injured again, I will have to have surgery immediately.

option 2: have surgery in 3 weeks, and I will recover in 6 months with lots of workouts and physical therapy.

I really hate this, I do not want surgery at all....





ill be super rich and own mt.hood and let everybody from ns ski for free... except freezed -hoodratz47

weak, but, id go with the surgery, yeah ull miss about a month of skiing, but, it'll be defenitely worth it in the longrun

my friend tore his ACL at my house and is only on crutches for 6-8 weeks after surgury

go for the sugery man, its worth just getting it fixed now, cas if you dont its just going to bother you like crazy. get it done, and the better you are at rehab the faster recovery time will be, the doctors are giving an estimate for the average person, if you want to get better faster you just have to be devoted, and you will be out there skiing in no time.

i had the same options... get surgery from one doc who wants to do it, or take the advice of the other who says i dont need it..... i didnt do it. wore a brace for the last 2 seasons cause the knee was just too weak. so all i have to say is, get the surgery if you think its completely necessary and you dont want your knee to make horrible noises..... otherwise wear a brace and work out like a mad man to get both knees back as strong as possible... stronger than before! im only unhappy cause i didnt work out enough to get the knee back to health.. so the brace is a must when skiing. only now 2.5 years later can i run without pain afterwords. hope that helped in some way.

what happened was the snow was slow all day, but then on one run, it was faster, becasue it was in the shade at that time, so the snow was harder...i misjudged the speed, overrotated a 360 to like a 400, and my left leg twisted behind me and turned to the right.

i would get the surgery over with so u dont have it hanging over u your whole life plus u will stil beable to ski for the second half of the year but i no it must be a hard choice to make

It's not really much of a decision man. You need the surgery. Even with a brace, being careful, etc., you'll still be grinding away at your knee joint. You'll ruin your meniscus and have arthritis at a young age. I was off crutches a week after my knee surgery, take the time to find a good surgeon with an aggressive recovery plan. It's really only seriously painful for the first few days, you'll be back to doing everything you were before in 6 months. You'll never be back to 100% if you don't get the surgery.

just go for it if it is just acl repair it isn't as bad as meniscus and ACL like i had six weeks ago most of the time ACL surgery you walk out the same day you have it with meniscus repair you have a brace on and can't flex more than 30 degrees and only have 50% weight with brace on and no weight with no brace on so just go with it and like other people commented why risk messing up your knee further in the future and never ski again when you just miss the first month of skiing to have a stronger better knee then you did before

get surgery man, u dont wanna be skiing your first day and fuck it up. You can get rehabed in 4 months, and whoever said 6-8 weeks on cruches is a fucking pussy, i was walking around after 3 days, no cruches after a week, do the surgery, its really not that bad

Surgery is no big deal. You're in pain for a few days, you do a few months of rehab, no biggie. It's basically no time at all in the scheme of everything, and it's worth it, I've had 3 surgeries on my acl.

Get the surgery - I did and my knee is stronger and better than before. I focused on the physical therapy and it paid off. My left leg feels so much more stable than my right leg, matter of fact I can tell it is only a matter of time before it goes. Don't short cut the therapy!! Don't short cut the PT.. Your quads will be atrophied and weak but they will come back quick if you don't short cut the physical therapy!

exactly what he said. its worth it, your knee gets soo much stronger if you rehab properly. then after a few months back skiing you can ditch the brace.

it dpends on what hapens to you with the injury i was just saying that in my case with the torn acl i had torn meniscus that is repaired when it is repaired since there is hardly any blood moving through the meniscus it takes a while to heal so before you start calling people pussys for being on crutches think about what happened to that individual. When you just have acl surgery unless it is serious you will be walking the next day.

i had my surgery last year (early june) and i was out skiing on teh first day of the season (early december). just go to physio lots, and work hard at home on your recovery.

i just had surgery and got home from the hospital yeasterday and just so you know, its realy painful. and not being able to walk around is a bitch. also, if i just got home yesterday, any1 know how long till ill be on skis agen, doctors say six moths but im hoping maybe a litlle earlier if i work really hard. any1 have any ideas?

^im guessing its not to serious if you were playing sports with it. And you cant call someone a pussy because in your case you werent on crutches for a long time, you have no idea what happened and how badly its torn.

well it looks like im going in for surgery next thursday, i'm doing lots of excercises for my quads and hamstrings...im scared though, i have hardly any tolerance for pain.

so to everyone who has gotten surgery for a torn ACL; what method did you pick? I cant decide between the patella tendon or a hamstring graft...doesnt seem to be a ton of difference according to my surgeon. just wanted to see if anyone had some first hand info, pros/cons etc. peace

Wow, old thread. I had a patella tendon graft from opposite knee. Started rehab within 48 hours of surgery and was skiing at 4 months. I was 100% between 5 and 6 months. To make it even better, I had cartilege snipped in the same knee one month before the ACL replacement.

I can't speak for the hamstring graft, but I've never met anyone who has had it that had as much success as I did. Good luck

get cut asap.

acl is not a quick and easy recovery. just PLAN on your season being over...i know of guys who rushed recovery to get back on the hill and are still fucked a couple years later.

call your season and come back next year super strong. your gonna be lookin at 8 months to be full strong and healthy again.

My girlfriend just had ACL surgery with the hamstring. What I've heard is the platella is less stretchy, so its stronger, but then you have to worry about knee pain where they took the tendon. The Hamstring is more stretchy, so some people think you'll always have float, but the recovery is faster. She had surgery Jan 2nd, and she was off crutches in a week, no brace now, and working out....But she's going to get a sports brace for riding....

Very good point. I chose a doctor who stressed recovery time over future pain/surgeries. I may regret it when I'm 50 and having my knees replaced, but shit, by then they'll have bionic legs with shocks and laser beams.

Be happy about the 3 week wait for surgery...I had to wait 6 months just to have surgery, and 6 months of therapy after that. Also, the patella graft takes longer to heal, get the hamstring, less pain and easier recovery.

The theory is that you'll recover faster because they're not doing as much stress on one leg, their distributing it to two. There basically betting that you're better off rehabbing with both knees at 80% strength than one at 100% and the other at 60%. Hope that makes sense.

It could be all bullshit for all I know, but it worked well for me. I was also pretty lucky to have access to a real good rehab center. And, I took that shit real serious because I did not want to be a gimp.
