Formatting my hard drive

so... my computer is pretty much toasted at this point because of having way to much stuff on it. so, i am looking to reformat it and just reinstall windows and everything, so it is wiped clean.

to do this wouldnt i just go to my computer, and click format on the drive, then just wait for it to finish and put in the windows cd i got with the computer for it to boot up?

i would think this is right, but i dont want to mess my computer up more than it already is, so if anyone out there has done this before, some pointers would definately be appreciated.

haha if its fucked how you gonna screw it up more, plus ur reformatting you dont give a shit what happends.

boot up with your windows cd and format that way.

yea don't worry about formatting the drive before installing windows. There is an option to format the drive in the windows installation. (right at the beggining, when you choose where to install it)

what window's cd? the xp one that comes in the box? my laptop is slow as balls, i want to wipe it.

so, to do this i would just stick the windows cd in first before i do anything, and it will wipe all the stuff i have off my computer and reload windows?

also, i am wondering, as d-loc said, what the chances are that i could screw it up worse than it already is?

haha you can screw it up more man... your formatting the drive, completely deleting everything. even if you do screw up windows on the drive more your going to format anyway.

well you have to hit "F8" or "del" whatever it says when booting to get into the bios options. then you change the boot device order to boot from the "cd rom" first. save and exit, it will restart then when you have the win xp cd in it will read that first and let you select options. it will be obvious from there.

you're using XP I assume?
Back-up everythign that you need.. cause you're not getting it back.
If you're using a relatively new computer with a SATA Hard drive, you may need a disk for its drivers or else when XP starts to install (after it's reformatted) it will say that it can't find a hard drive... and then you need to find another computer to get those drivers, they're usually included with your motherboard CD.

Just pop in the XP CD and restart the computer. you should see a prompt that says "press any key to boot from CD ..."

--If you don't see that, you'll need to set the startup device to CD rom 1st, HD0 2nd in the BIOS (pressing delete at startup usually - there will be a menu somewhere for startup devices)

Then just follow the prompts from there (I forget what the exact menus are, but I think it's simply "install windows" - and overwrite. It will even ask you to format - just choose the quick option.

then you have to reinstall things........... make sure you have your cd's before

i am confused, because it seems like that is what i should do, but it seems like everyone is just saying all i need to do is put in the cd before i boot up my comp, and before i do anything else, and it will format the drive and install windows again. is this correct?

Correct e-pollard. I don't even think it will let you format your hard drive the way you are talking about.

you seriously just put the CD in, and restart the computer.. if it starts back into windows, then you'll have to set the bios to boot with the CD/DVD rom... PS make sure you're not using SATA (the cable connecting to your motherboard would be skinny and red)..
if it is, you'll need to get the drivers on diskette and when you start the install of windows, it'll ask to press f8 for 3rd party scsi drivers..
if it's not SATA, then ignore that. but - it can cause headaches and is my biggest warning..

it will if your windows is on a partitioned drive like mine is on a 10 GB separate of all my data. lets windows run more smooth.

and yeah a mean it CANT fuck ur pc up anymore than just getting corrupted

remember to back up everything you want and not take any viruses with you, i have deleated shit i needed a couple times by formating, it really sucks

^yeah that would be a good idea if it was like my desktop, but my laptop is my bitch computer, i dont do anything on it unless my other computers are broken or something, so theres nothing really saved on there sept for my wireless mouse and my wireless internet card, but i have both cd's for that so tomorrow i am gonna format away haha.

I tried deleting my hard drive like 3 times with this comp and i cant do it. I did a bunch with my old comp but now i put in the windows cd and ive tried it so many times but i just cant do it. Im not worrying about anymore though cuz its not acting as bad as it was. I think i have 2 or 3 copies of windows on my comp right now cuz i couldnt delete it, but i kept trying by installing a new one and stuff. I dont know i got real confused.
