PC or Mac?

Which would produce the best playback quality from your film? Running with hi8 and wondering if there is a difference between Mac's and PC's, and if so, which would put out the best quality?

It doesnt really depend on which computer. It more depends on which programs you use and the compression of the files. Mac has better programs to use.

macs have far better video capture and editing capabilities. actually, macs are better in every aspect, EXCEPT they are more expensive and have less software available to them (i.e. comp games and whatnot). that will all change shortly though. macs have far more robust systems.

im indifferent about this. mac os is stable as shit. really rock solid. with a pc, you WILL get more bang for your buck. I jsut got a powerbook g4, but i plan to get a nice pc, and not a mac for my desktop. i have no problem using either os and you mac people really need to stop whining about viruses and spyware on pcs, its not that hard to deal with and you still get more bang for your buck witha pc even with an anti virus rinning on the pc. AVG free edition is a great free av for pc.

then mac is the way to go my friend. trust me, no viruses so its perfect for the net, and amazing with video editing. just a little more pricey.

and yeah jonesy. i have a house full of macs and 1 pc, and file transfer is friggin tough, and pc's only use executables too.

I think PCs being cheaper is also big misconception. (For everyone that doesnt know how to build computers) By the time you upgrade your machine(PC) to what youd get stock from a Mac they are pretty evenly price.

here is what i will be getting soon for about $150 more then the imac g5:
AMD Athalon 4000 64
PCI Express
160 gig hard drive
ATI Radeon 800 LX (pro) with 256mb
1 gig of ram

add a monitor which most people who have computer already ahve and your set. pc=more band for your buck. now that is just talking speed. i agree, macs are more stable, although pcs arnt hard to keep in good working order if you know a bit.

Pcs are gay looking, have shitty video and music editing. all they have is office preccesing. I wish I had a Mac....*sigh*

dude, you can get a pc case that leeks like anything you want or make your own. that doesnt make any sense. as far as video editing, final cut is the best, but you can get avid and avid is damn good. there are many other editiing programs for pc on top of that. photoshop runs faster on pcs.

yeah but not everyone here can afford to upgrade their PC like that. In the long run, I think Macs are better, cause they cost more, but that's only because they already come with quality programs built into them. PCs have nothing. For internet browsing, PC is better. People just don't know how to protect themselves from viruses.

PC if your a poor ass, mac if you can afford it
pc is way cheaper to upgrade and make faster, and ass far as video editing goes a wise man once told me that adobe premiere stopped coming out for mac before fcp and they are basically identical, pretty weird.

idk if you misstyped, but you got it wrong. mac is better for web brousing becuase of viruses and security.

and it isnt that expensive to get a cool looking case. I got mine for about $10 more then a normal gray case. it is bright blue, has a window in it and has blue leds that are annoying as fuck on the fron of it. i think there are plusses and minuses for both which is why in a little while im going to have both, and partially it is becuase i have used windows much more so i can do things faster in it.

here's what i meant to say:
premiere pro aka premiere 7) is mysteriously similiar to fcp. Infact, before premiere pro you could get premiere for both pc and mac, but all of a sudden premiere pro came out, which is very very very simliar to fcp, and they stopped selling it for mac. I think apple had their hands in it somehow.

web browsing: speed goes to PC, security goes to a Mac, but with firefox, everything is rendered identically on either platform, so there is a standrad there, and flash 8 will fix lag problems on Macs, so then i think Macs will have the edge on PCs. the safari browser may be solid and secure, but no one designs pages so they render right on it yet.

photoshop: depends on your processor(s), a hyperthreaded intel machine will run photoshop faster than a single processor mac given they have the same amount of RAM because photoshop sees the hyperthreading as the machine having dual processors. if the mac is a dual processor, then the mac blows the pc away.

video editing: premiere and final cut are similar, so it comes down to preference, both are very powerful tools. again the processor issue comes in to play, premiere runs quickly with a hyperthreaded processor, and final cut works well on a mac regardless of dual processors or not.

If your importing Hi8, insn't that quality inferior
to any digital format
so both should give you the optimum anyways
Mac for home use / PC for buisness/school

You can do it, if you try, if not oh well, then do somthing else!

isnt safari based of of netscape which is based off of Firefox?



and about photoshop on a singe processor pc vs a dual processor mac. you have to look at cost. the only way you can compair anything at all is if you take amac and a pc that COST THE SAME! its all about band for buck unless your actually spending the 4 - 6 k dollars for the top of the line and if you do that they are both damn fast. sure the fastest pc could be faster then the fastest mac or vise versa(although i think at this point, that is the way things are) but money is the overall compairing factor. if you buy a mac and a pc that cost the same amount, the pc will almost aloways be faster.

jaross, i said single hyperthreaded processor, which the OS and now photoshop and some other high end graphics programs recognize as a dual processor. this essentially gives you dual processor speed for the price of one processor. if you look at benchmark tests though, a mac processor the same rated speed as an intel or AMD processor will almost always run faster using graphics apps because of its shorter pipeline, something like 5 steps on a mac as opposed to 21 on a pc. you are right about comparing what you get for what you pay for, and in that respect, the pc that costs the same as a mac will almost always have a higher clock speed, but not necesarily perform faster.

and about web browsers, safari is its own entity. netscape is built off the closed source version of mozilla, whereas firefox is the open source version. firefox renders pages exactly the same on a mac as it does on a pc, which is nice for web developers because you dont have to worry about different standards for different operating systems. safari is mac only, and currently doesnt render pages quite as correctly as firefox does, mostly dealing with some javascripts and z ordering things. IE works entirely different on a mac than a pc, also. i guess what i am saying is, no matter what kind of computer you have, firefox is your best bet. its faster, hardly ever crashes, has tabs, and renders pages complying to w3c standards.

once you learn it, the mac system of dealing with open windows/programs is better. but only if you know how to use expose, but then only if you set the tile windows key to something easyer to reach then f9. withought that, i find i can move through different programs and stuff in windows much faster. it is nice to have a program running withought having any windows for it open though. one thing that serously pisses me off is the dock. if you have it not auto hide, then it takes up alot of space, and can get in the way if there is anything you need to get to with the mouse at the bottom of the screen. if you have ti auto hide, the delay for it to come up when you put the mouse at the bottom of the screen is unbarable.
