serious movies or movies to think about:
Princess Mononoke, best movie ever. no, seriously.
Adaptation
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Children of Men, up there with Princess Mononoke
Donnie Darko
Pan's Labyrinth
The Birds
Rear Window
i agree with these except i must say that i liked totoro better as far as miyazaki films go. probably because its just a cute, warm, light film. i also thoroughly enjoyed spirited away but i definitely liked princess mononoke better.
pan's labyrinth got jipped out of best original screenplay. i dont understand how it didnt win that oscar. forming this concept, based on nothing else, not a novel no adaptation whatsoever...is an incredibly difficult task. speaking as a film critic and a screenwriting myself, this screenplay displays an incredible imagination in a man that is both inventive and intelligent...and somehow makes the two a coherent structural framework for one of the best films of the year.
i didnt like the birds but rear window is by far my favourite hitchcock film.
children of men is the most refreshing style of directing i've seen in a while. it is fairly typical of cuaron's style...especially the lingering of the camera..like in y tu mama tambien. i think cuaron has definitely earned his right to the auteur status. he's one of the new crossover/middle cinema directors to come out of mexico in the 80s and 90s and i think he's really made a name for himself..well obviously he has...but i mean he's definitely earned his status. he's a genius.
