Monuments



I deem them comparable
As I can navigate without a map
Not that I know the names

Give me monuments
Not constructed to ephemeral man
Or his passing, disappearing deeds
But to time itself
Laying down, then upheaval of
The ocean shelf

Give me monuments
Not riddled with the holes of
Ten million point and shoots
Simply treasure, not loot to
Be taken back as a symbol of
Where others haven’t been

Give me monuments
Far grander still than anything humans could dream
They are limited, or so it seems
By the comparatively feeble heads
and hearts they sprung out of

Give me monuments
Without handrails, steps or guards
No tourists, planes or helicopters to mar
the Beauty
Of what man can’t create, only share
Posed so much higher than these frauds
Counterfeits, spectacles of
Human puniness and frailty
Ask about the comparison
You won’t hear a word from me
