Contrary to popular belief, freedom of information, and the news that Americans get is NOT necessarily the truth. The entire issue is an impossibility, Americans don’t know about censorship in America because there is censorship in America, because the news that the masses gets is a product created as a collaboration of (semi)legitimate news organizations, corporations, and the government of the united states. In order to even learn there is an issue, the individual must search for it by themselves, no source of news is going to inform the American people of it simply because they’re just as much a part of it as the government is.
As is evident in post 9-11 America, censorship of the voice of the media and independent news is mostly controlled through political pressure, the vetoing of stories and news events before they even hit the presses by local and federal government officials. A further element of this censorship is the dismissal of any sort of fact that varies from the official story, downright disregard for legitimate news that contradicts the white house’s version of events; under the name of patriotism, or national security.
This entire situation sickens and depresses me. Just as the elections of the United States are no longer fair and balanced, due to the ease at which results can be changed with flawed security on digital voting machines, the news is no longer news, but propaganda. To find the truth about something, you have to take a minimum of three American news sources, and make a summary of them all, then compare that story to one from international news sources, and form some semblance of a guess about which is more correct. A perfect example of this was an article written in the U.K, by Michael Meacher, called “the war on terror is bogus”, a front page news article which entirely blasted George w Bush, and the war on terror, systematically proving why it’s unfounded and unjust. You’d think this would be front page news in America, the country which has the most at stake around this issue, but it was not even mentioned in the United States or Canada except for a footnote noting that it existed. (The article in question can be found here: http://www.serendipity.li/wot/meacher.htm)
Now how exactly, does that work? Why in the world would no American news source, even liberal ones, pick up this story? They were obviously aware of its existence, but chose to ignore it. Why? To be honest, I don’t know. But it seems it’s our responsibility as the power behind the governmental system of the U.S, to find out, and to fix this.
To quote the associated press, here’s a list of the changes in legal rights, as of 2002:
Overview of Changes to Legal Rights
The Associated Press
September 5, 2002

Some of the fundamental changes to Americans' legal rights by the Bush administration and the USA Patriot Act following the terror attacks:

* FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION: Government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity to assist terror investigation.

* FREEDOM OF INFORMATION: Government has closed once-public immigration hearings, has secretly detained hundreds of people without charges, and has encouraged bureaucrats to resist public records requests.

* FREEDOM OF SPEECH: Government may prosecute librarians or keepers of any other records if they tell anyone that the government subpoenaed information related to a terror investigation.

* RIGHT TO LEGAL REPRESENTATION: Government may monitor federal prison jailhouse conversations between attorneys and clients, and deny lawyers to Americans accused of crimes.

* FREEDOM FROM UNREASONABLE SEARCHES: Government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigation.

* RIGHT TO A SPEEDY AND PUBLIC TRIAL: Government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial.

* RIGHT TO LIBERTY: Americans may be jailed without being charged or being able to confront witnesses against them.

Yeah. That’s right, you know those things called rights you had? Gone. And the only legal writ under which you could challenge imprisonment? Wasn’t it called habeas corpus? Oh right, that’s gone too. Outrage, and protest of this is the only way this is ever going the change, as the government derives its power from the people in a democratic system. But is that even true anymore? I leave it to you to decide.
