Are you fucking serious? My heart always gets that heavy feeling when I see videos like this. This needs to be used at avy classes as a bad example. No urgency at all, casually taking his skis off... Has only his head and an arm dug out and trys to pull him out with a pole?! That's just wrong on so many levels. I'd post Nimbus' Camp BC video where Juelien Reigner had to dig out Eliel Hindert in an incredibly sketchy spot and he does an amazingly timely and efficient job of it... But I'm on mobile. Scary stuff forsure. Be safe out there.

The buried guy was casually talking to him the whole time. It wasn't an emergency. People who aren't exposed to high stress every day seem to believe that you function better when you freak the fuck out but it's very easy to stay calm and take your time. I also wouldn't start hacking away with a metal shovel if my buddy was safely able to breath and calmly communicate with me.

The big mistake was dropping the gloves. They could see him in the snow, he had time to take the gloves with him so he wouldn't have to try to work with a frozen metal shovel with his bare hands. Just slowed down the process in the end. The guy wasn't far away, they could have gone down one at a time in about 30 total seconds and said "oh, no big deal dude we'll get you out."

Just playing devil's advocate because this is already turning into a classic skier "I took an avy class once and in hindsight I'm a fucking champ at rescues" thread.

honestly give the guy a break. like yeah he was dumb by take his gloves off and not stopping to find the handle once he knew the avy victim was okay, but in all it was just a small avalanche. at the begining he was a dumbass by going slow to get down there but once he realized the guy was head up and able to breath and okay, they were both taking there time. its not like once they knew they were alright they need to rush.

yeah it wasnt anything too major, but if I was neck deep in snow with one arm barely free I would be furious if my friends sat and watched as I shoveled myself out. The fact that the burried guy even touched the shovel is beyond me.

it's important to not rush in an emergency like this, best thing you can do is stay calm and use your head. When you rush things you can forget key steps to take when making a rescue. however that guy did a terrible job and I would have been pissed if I was the guy who got buried, at least he didn't die though.
I don't scream like a 12 year old girl when I ski park, so obviously powder is better.

Wasn't his head fully covered with snow though? All I seen was his glove or hand sticking up when the rescuer first go there. And after 5:47 when he pulls the victim's left arm out, the victim instantly goes to digging his face out. Sure he isn't burried deep, but he clearly can't breath and still has a face full of snow. And if he wouldn't have gotten raped with the shovel (assembled or un-assembled) had he dug from below the victim.

I do get where you're coming from though by playing the devils advocate. Maybe many of us would have acted similarly in the given situation. Doesn't mean it's safe or proper though. The organization of the whole thing is what really gets me though. Why didn't he have his own prepared pack, and why wasn't he equipped with a beacon? Just so many questions.

And yeah Jake that's the edit I'm talking about. I mean Reigner didn't waste any time at all getting in there and getting Eliel to a point where he could breath. Eliel was super visible in there, and regardless of that fact, he even said that he would clear an air pocket and it would just get covered back in right away. Scary stuff. Really good edit though.

I don't know much about avy safety, being from jersey... But after it stopped moving shouldn't they have gotten down there instead of standing up their and doing nothing. Like area is safe, now it's rescue time?

If the skier was completely buried and wasn't visible, then everyone with a beacon would have to turn theirs to search and work in a pattern depending how many people there is. Then they would all have to probe 'on a line' doing a search for the skier, then dig the skier out once located. There's more to it then that but that's my understanding of it at the basics of it.

Not sure why he was getting the beacon though? Maybe in the event of a secondary slide? Still weird that he needed her pack, her beacon, and then no one could find a shovel handle...

Ha, so many questions! They'll all never be answered though.
