First Appeared: Spring 2002

Shannon Schad, Colorado's stand-out freerider, suffered a collapsed lung on July 6 after decking out a huge air in Blackcomb's halfpipe.

Schad was working on a new trick, an alley-oop underflip when he hit the lip of the pipe and was thrown to the bottom of the pipe, landing on the left side of his chest.

"I thought I dislocated my shoulder," commented Schad. "My whole left side was swollen. It hurt real bad, it hurt to breathe too."

Immediately Schad skied down and flew back to Colorado that day in order to get checked out by doctors. The diagnosis: a collapsed lung filled with air pockets and two broken ribs.

The doctors at Fairfield hospital inserted a tube into Schad's chest in order to release the pockets of air.

Today Shannon is feeling 100 percent better and felt that the accident could not have been avoided. It's just one of those things that "could've happened to anyone."

He plans on taking things easy for the next week before heading back to work.

Whistler Blackcomb Peak to Peak campaign

Whistler Blackcomb Peak to Peak campaign

Sep 8th 2009

Back in the spring time I was asked to shoot a campaign for Whistler Blackcomb.  The ads were to center around the new Peak to Peak gondola that spans the gap between Whistler and Blackcomb and the first versions have now hit the news stands in Freeskier magazine and Transworld Snowboarding.  We had some difficulties [...]

Video Park Report by Brian Finestone - October 1, 2010

Video Park Report by Brian Finestone - October 1, 2010

Oct 13th 2010

Whistler Blackcomb's Nintendo Terrain Parks crew is bringing park riding to the forefront by adding an Olympic-sized Superpipe to the mix. Crews are widening and straightening the Superpipe's fall-line for better riding and to accommodate the 22-foot Global Pipe Cutter. Whistler Blackcomb is also partnering with Arena Snowparks for rail fleet production and the 15-foot mini pipe returns to Blackcomb Mountain due to popular demand. Crews are also improving the Nintendo Terrain Park on Whistler Mountain. Park preparations began in early September with four new snow tower guns set up on Blackcomb Mountain. The snowguns will increase snowmaking productivity 75 per cent in the park, allowing features to open to the public even earlier in the season. The Whistler Blackcomb Parks event calendar has been modified to showcase all aspects of park riding, including pipe, snowcross and rails throughout the season. Whistler Blackcomb is replacing four grooming cats with the new Piston Bully 600 snow cats, two of which are equipped with winches for grooming steeper and more technical terrain. Whistler Blackcomb grooms 1,200 to 1,400 acres of terrain each night, more than any other resort in North America.
