Tremblant presents the extreme activities of TELUS Spin

$50,000 in prize money and a lot of prizes to be won in seven thrilling events

Station Mont Tremblant, March20, 2008 – People who come to see TELUS Spin will be doing more than celebrating the return of the fine weather and diving into spring skiing and après-ski in the party atmosphere of Tremblant’s patios. They’ll take in amazing performances on both stage and slope. In addition to the artists who’ll be performing on the Place Saint-Bernard outdoor stage, Quebec’s finest freestyle skiers and snowboarders will be competing in the seven extreme events where there’s $50,000 to be won. The sports events will feature incredible contests such as the T4 team competition, Urban Jib, McDonald’s Skiercross and the Boardercross, plus new events like the Salomon Academy Jib whose Canadian finals will be held at Tremblant, and an entirely new jump in the Burton Junior event.

March 29 – Spectacular competition by team Coca-Cola and Billabong Flaunt It

The T4 freestyle team skiing and riding competition is back this year with purses and prizes totaling $15,000 for the winning teams. This big air event, which takes place at night at the base of the mountain on a surprise module, is the only one of its kind in the country, with a new module every year. The teams, made up of two skiers and two riders, take off from the jump four at a time to do their stunts.

Just for girls

There’s $5,000 in purses plus lots of prizes for the best riders in the Billabong Flaunt It, a slopestyle competition that lets girls spend a great day in the park. The girls will take on a course specially designed for the event in the North Side terrain park. Music, barbecue and a relaxed atmosphere will be the order of the day.

Junior competitions: the Burton Junior and Salomon Jib Academy

Juniors will be featured on March 30 in two competitions for juniors only. The Burton Junior invites young people ages 9 – 15 to take on the impressive jump at the base of the South Side, while the Salomon Jib Academy, slopestyle championship for skiers ages 16 and under, will hold its Canadian final in the North Park. For the winner, an all-expense-paid trip to Mammoth, California, with the Salomon international team.

Thursday, April 3: Urban Jib

The Urban Jib is always one of the most popular TELUS Spin events because of where it’s held – a venue as unique as it is spectacular. On April 3, Rue des Remparts in the pedestrian village will be buried under 250 tons of snow and a course of ramps and original modules will take shape between the shops and restaurants. The audience will find itself lined up all around the course and on the balconies overlooking the street so as not to miss any of the action. In addition to offering a completely original event, the organizers are also introducing a new format for the competition this year. Purses of $8000 and more than $2000 in prizes from sponsors K2 Ski and K2 Snowboarding will go to the best riders.

April 5-6: McDonald’s Skiercross and the Boardercross

The second weekend of TELUS Spin presents two events that will have adrenaline pumping to the max: the McDonald’s Skiercross and the Boardercross, taking place on April 5 and 6 respectively, will offer purses of $12 000 each. The Skiercross, an event in the 2010 Olympics, is a race where four participants face off simultaneously in a tight course made up of jumps and rolls where it’s one sloping turn tightly after another. The two first skiers to cross the finish line move on to the next round until there are only four contestants for the final. The following day, it’s the riders who take to the course for the same format of competition. This event was presented for the first time in the Turin Olympic Games in 2006.

Spring skiing, après-ski and parties

To get the best of spring skiing, the Spin Pass is back! Unlimited skiing and riding from March 24 to the end of the season for $109.99. Then after a day on the slopes, head for Place Saint-Bernard where the terraces await you for some well-earned refreshment. Music and ambience guaranteed for the best après-ski in the province. At night, it’s one party after another in the bars of the pedestrian village, to wind up every event in the program.
