17 July 2007
While Sydneysiders are shivering in the coldest July morning in 21 years today, Perisher Blue has been hit with the predicted snowstorm bringing even more smiles to powder addicted skier and snowboarders. With a fine weekend forecast to follow this week’s snowfalls, this weekend may just be the pick of the season!
Snow is currently falling in Perisher Village and the temperature is sitting on a very chilly -7°C after an overnight low of -12°C.
According to the long-range forecast provided by Snowatch (www.snowatch.com.au), today’s “very cold change should see widespread snowfalls to low levels develop across the mountains. It looks like around 15-30cm on the 17th-18th with the snow being very light and dry due to the very cold temperatures. Trailing this we should see light snow showers on and off during the 19th to the 20th.”
The Bureau of Meteorology supports this prediction and reveals “snow showers clearing [on Friday] for a fine weekend”. If these reports ring true, this weekend could be one all snow enthusiasts look forward to, complete with fresh snow and blue skies.
This is fantastic news for the 2007 winter season getting even better! An impressive 219cm of natural snow has fallen since the first day of the season (9 June 2007) and favourable conditions for snowmaking have added to the very good to excellent cover across the four-resort areas.
Taking the official snow depth of 129.7cm provided by Snowy Hydro Limited at Spencer’s Creek (taken Thursday 12 July 2007) and the good-looking long-range forecast for more snow during the next month, things are looking promising for a very memorable 2007 winter season.
With all this snow around, now is the time to head on up and have a snowy escape. Great July specials are still available!
