So i just PLASTI-DIPPED my Full Tilts. Worked out so sick!!

This video shows you everything that you need to know about how P-D works(skip to 5:08):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvkq-qyY9aY

If you dont know already, P-D is a spray on rubber paint that doesn't chip or peel. It is about $10 a can and it seems to go forever.

To dye your boots it would probably cost around $20 in rit dye and it takes about 5 hours once you have dismantled your boots and boiled the water and then eventually put them in the water.

With the P-D it took me around 1h 30mins from start to finish and I have only used half of a can. However, the best part about P-D is if you hate what you have done, all you have to do is peel it off. Its basically like a spray on sticker.

This shit is awesome and i would definitely recommend doing it.

Ill give you a few tips if you ever want to do it yourself.

First off, you will need:

x1 can of PLASTI DIP $8 approx.

x1 roll of Masking tape $2 approx.

FIRST: Take the liners and tongues off your boots. You can take your tongues off also if you dont want them sprayed.

SECOND: Clean your boots with a stiff brush and some soapy water just to get all the crap off them. If you don't clean all the crap off them, you will not have a smooth finish.

THIRD: Dry your boots THOROUGHLY with some kitchen towels or an old bathroom towel. If you dont dry them properly and apply the P-D then it will not form on the surface of the boot.

FOURTH: Get your masking tape and tape off any areas that you do not want to paint. For example, on my boots, I masked the calf piece which was much quicker and easier than taking it off. See below:

Click for larger image

I am currently PLASTI DIPPING my splices too, but this is just an example of masking off the parts you don't want, in this pic, the foam of my goggs.

FITH: This is the most important step. Shake the can for at least 2-3 minutes! If you do not do this, the P-D will spray out lumpy and you will have lots of bubbles and imperfections on the finished product.

SIXTH: Put down something on the ground so you are not spraying directly onto the floor. I used a real big cardboard box that I broke up.

SEVENTH: Start spraying! Make sure the can is about 1 foot away from the boot when spraying. So what you are going to want to do when spraying your boots is to not try and cover the whole surface of the boot in one go, you are going to need to put at least 4 coats on them so it doesn't matter if you miss some parts at the start! Its quite difficult to explain so I would seriously advise watching this video to get the idea of what to do. *******http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR14nrlJxZc******* As this guy says, do not double back on yourself more than once. It makes it look uneven in the end. Leave about 15-20 mins between each coat to allow the previous coat to dry.

EIGHTH: You should now be finishing your 4th or 5th coat. Let it dry for about 10 mins then you can start peeling off the masking tape and shabang you're done!

Here are mine:

Here is the website Igot the Plasti Dip from. https://www.dipyourcar.com/product.php?productid=8&cat=8&page=1

I got masking tape from my local hardware store for a dollar.

I hope this helps y'all!

NOTES:

1. I AM NOT A PLASTI DIP REP. I know it may seem like that. haha

2. To answer the DURABILITY questions, P-D is used to paint whole cars and trucks. People wouldn't spend $300 spraying their whole car if it didn't hold up for a long time. Also, Its only 7 bucks on that website. Even if it only lasts you a couple of months, you still have half of the can left that you used for the original!

Shit, didn't mean to click post.

This is not solely for boots: I did it to my Splices and it worked great. You could do it on your poles and it would stop them chipping and flaking. The list is endless.

It cost me $3 in RIT dye for my Full Tilts...

Cool idea though. Should be interesting to see how they hold up.

Aha, I was thinking the same thing. And to the OP, I think they will be pretty durable still. Have that stuff on a lot of my tools at work, and they've been going strong for a few years, daily use in grease and being hucked across the floor. And worst case scenario is starts to peel, you could always spray a wee bit more on that area, or peel the rest off like you said, either way, its not the end of the world.

I have never understood why someone would want to dye their gear. If you want black full tilt's get first chairs and put softer tongues on em, hint hint they come in black. Doing stuff to your boots like this is definitely gonna weaken performance, you might not notice it, but in the long run they will probably deteriorate faster. I can maybe understand goggles but kids are asking how to dye helmets, which clearly say not to do stuff like that too.

/end rant.

i get the whole customizing your gear thing... but boots? i value performance out of my boots way too much to care what they look like. while i'm not entirely sure what your exact boots are made of, most higher end boots aren't made out of the same materials as "plasti dip." polyethylene and polyether are commonly used in higher performing boots. Also, why would you take one of the lightest boots on the market and just add weight to them with this rubber/plastic spray.  Also, this shit is made mostly out of Propane and Butane... highly flammable, so don't try leaving your shells near a heater/fire to dry... you'll be in trouble.

That's the nice thing about Plasti-Dip though is you can easily remove it whenever you want, it isn't permanent like dye or anything. I agree that this probably isn't the best thing for your boots but it's kind of cool to be able to customize them a little bit without it being permanent.

I doubt many people on here have a casual $650 to drop on new boots. I'm also curious to know how you concluded this plasti-dip "is definitely gonna weaken performance". just sayin'

I never said that it would "definitely gonna weaken performace." I said that I value the performance I get out of my boots... and i wouldn't want to alter that somehow. I agree that it's pretty cool to have something that's completely original and something you can call your own. I also agree that most people don't have that kinda cash to just drop on new boots, which is why I would just leave them alone as they were designed as to not potentially ruin my investment just to dip them black. To each their own, I'd love to see some crazy masking done on a pair to make them look crazy.

super informative. quality post. i made the assumption that it was rather flamable based on the MSDS Information available on the product stating "This material is flammable and may be ignited by heat, sparks, flame or static electricity."
