Subject: STH 16 or STH 16 steel?

I'm getting my setup for next year all in order for this coming winter. I've checked both and I need the 9-16 DIN that both have now it comes down to what you guys prefer.

Are they for park skis or pow skis? keep in mind the steels are substantially heavier, but also far mor durable (they will last you more then a decade guarantied)

for park skis, i would do the normal sth, for pow then the steels all the way

Well obviously a steel 16 din binding will out last a regular binding. But your still buying a 16 din binding from Salomon. Just saying.

Unless your a huge guy 220lbs+ just get the STH 16. It may interest you to know that only a few salomon athletes use the steel version, most just use the standard version. The only athletes I know that use the Steel, are Mike riddle and Seth. Genrally the rest just use the standard, so you will be fine with the standard version.

I believe cody also rides the steel. The steel retails for a rediculous price, but one can easily find an old pair of 916s for under $200 (I just bought some pristine 916 LABs for 160). However, for park, I would probably prefer the standard version, because both will be bombproof but might as well just save on weight. If you're buying new, go standard STH for sure, if you're buying used, just get whatever's cheapest.

^no, I figured cody would use them too, but he just uses the standard version. Of course he may have a pair of steels, but on most of his skis its just the standard STH. Same for sean P, I figured he would have steels, but he just uses the standard version too.

I figure if those guys can use them, then us mortals will be more then fine too.

Regular ones will do you just fine. I've had a single pair last 5 seasons. It outlasted all the skis it was on. I'm sure you'll be just fine.

Does anyone else feel aroused... and jealous... and worried?

Yes, but they can call Salomon for replacements any time they want. From experience, STH16 heels last around 100 days of hard skiing then get sloppy.

Other than the weight, the big difference between the STH and the Steels is the toe.

They both have adjustable toe height as well as toe wing adjustment. The STH has a simultaneous wing adjustment(one screw moves both wings), whereas the Steel has dual wing adjustment like the old 916s.

If you get any shell work done to the toes of your boots, it's nice to be able to center your toe in your binding with the dual adjustment of the 916s. My old boots had a lot of width added to the outsides of my boots, and wouldn't sit centered in a binding.

That said, because they both have a lot of adjustability, and need to be set properly. If you don't know what you're going, it's very easy to create problems for yourself. If you take care of them and don't wreck the toe wings, they will take care of you.

I ski 916s on everything except a pair of old 192 Elan 777s, and I only use STH16s on them to cut down on their ungodly weight.

It doesn't matter if you're a King or a lowly street sweeper, sooner or later you'll dance with the Reaper.

I have around 160 days on one set of mine, and there is no slop at all. Its probably the forward pressure adjustment needs setting again, or check that the brake is not worn.

Nope, I had them tested and everything, the heel springs just wore out. I ended up riding the heels 2 higher than the toes and still had to be careful not to land too far forward.

916s, 997s and 957s from now on.

^ oh right so the heel pieces did not wear out, it was just a dodgy spring. That could make sense, springs could wear, or you probably had a bad one, but I thought it unlikely the heel piece its self wore out.
