I'm thinking about making a site, to publish photo's, show what's up and have a personal e-mail account. I find it very confusing how it all works though for international domains. In the Netherlands what's normal, is that you buy a domain for a couple bucks a year and then have a seperate web-host. Now, I'm thinking of getting a .com domain instead of an .NL domain, because it looks nicer and should appeal to a broader public.

Apart from that I'm a complete noob when it comes to all this stuff, I'm not sure where to look. It looks like hosting and the domain name here are combined. I'm just gonna make a wordpress site, as I don't know shit about html, java, flash and all that stuff (although I do intend to learn either of them some time to make a site myself).

Now, I've looked at a site called Bluehost.com and you have the possibility to install the Wordpress plugin (or something like that) and you can just start building your site from there. Now, does the content then still get hosted at wordpress? Or woud it be hosted at Bluehost.com
I'm a really freak when it comes to something like this. I would like a site with a couple urls. tijmendal.com as my root site and then tijmendal.com/photos, tijmendal.com/projects and tijmendal.com/contact or so as my other sub-sites to call 'em that. Would that still be possible?

If someone can even slightly enlighten me, that'd be great. I'm completely oblivious to how this works.
Thanks in advance

I had a Wordpress account a while ago but never really worked with it. It's got quite a few layout options, and is pretty easy to use. Not sure about the sub-sites though

I use bluehost and wordpress for my website ( www.evanheathvisual.com ) Its hosted by bluehost, not wordpress, your domain name will show up, not ____.wordpress. Wordpress is just a tool you use.

It's really nice. I paid the equivlant of like 6.99 a month (so it was like 84 bucks total) up front for an entire year. There are other options too, you can check it out.

I like using word press. What i did is I took a template i liked, then modified the PHP to create something more original and better looking (IMO). its a great way to build a site without having to just code it all (which is also fun but annoying) Having it build with wordpress makes it SO EASY to change shit too.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking of doing as well.
Bluehost has like an integrated wordpress thingy, do other sites offer that as well?

Also, you have this url for example:
http://www.evanheathvisual.com/actionsports/

Does it automatically make a .com/actionsports or do you have to do that? I hate sites where the root URL is used for everything or sites where it's the root plus a load of numbers and letters that don't make sense.

i'm sure other hosting websites do the same, but bluehost works wel.

as for that url, that is a "page" i created with wordpress that automatically turned into that url when i created it. So if i made a new page called "weddings" or something, the new page would be .com/weddings

I use 1&1, been with them for two years. They have been very legit so far, so there's that. I also use Wordpress as my back-end as I'm not a web designer.

Ok, that's really good to know. Sounds amazing!

Also, is it just possible to rent a domain, or is buying one possible as well?

Yeah (and that's including hosting), but owning that shit is cool.

Also, I checked on Wordpress.com and what you can do is just buy a domain name there for 18$/year and you can just keep it hosted there. That's a pretty good option too, right? Or wouldn't I be able to make an email adres.

Getting your own domain/host is so much better, working on wordpress' website you are more restricted than if you use a host (and even if you pay for more access to the code, its still not that much and its like 30 bucks) and using a wordpresss builder, you have way more options.

You have your public root, which should have an index.html or home.html document somewhere in it (your welcome/home screen when example.com is entered)

To make something like example.com/weddings/ you'd create a folder in the public root titled weddings with its own index.html or home.html in it.

if you want example.com/weddings.html then you just create an html file

The shorter the better I think.

I wouldn't go for anything that long. Shortness in a way resembles profesionalism.

Try:

I am lucky not an awfull lot of people have my first name (Tijmen -> prn. Tymen) let alone last name.
Right now I'm in the process of trying to buy Tijmen.com of another dude. How sick would that be. Having your first name as your URL...

I'm on fatcow.com right now, but the cheap introductory price is about to expire.
Is $100 a year the price I'm going to have to pay? Or are there cheaper options out there?

I wrote my own HTML, so I don't need all the fancy templates and stuff. I do need my email though

i'm using hostgator and paying i think 70 or 80 a year. They use cPanel so you can set up your email like matt@msmedia or whetever you want. Customer service is fantastic, i've probably logged 12 hours on live chat with them. would highly recommend. Pretty sure Jamie is using them as well

I'm paying 24$/year at Fatcow right now. I'm sure if you talk to them you can get another year for that price.
And otherwise you can always switch hosts and pay introduction price for another year.

Who Applied for Photography-Related Top-Level Domain Names?

Jun 14th 2012

There are currently 22 “generic” top level domains (e.g. .COM, .NET, .ORG), but that’s about to change. ICANN, the authority behind the Internet’s domain name system, began accepting applications for new gTLDs, meaning we may soon see web addresses that end in things like .PARIS, .FERRARI, and .KIDS. Yesterday was “reveal day” — the day [...]

What are you? Web Designer or Web Developer

What are you? Web Designer or Web Developer

May 17th 2011

While debatable, there is a major difference between a Web Designer and a Web Developer. Before you decide which side you fall on, lets take a look at the definitions: Web Designer - Web designers can be very similar to graphic designers, most often using graphic programs to create skins (page layouts) and another to make their visual design come to life. They are responsible for page layout, color palettes, and even user-friendliness of a web page. So in a nutshell, Web Designers are focused on the look and feel of a website including the information and user interface design, rather then the programming (code) side of things. Web Developer - Web development is the ?behind-the-scenes? work, extensive and complicated language that determines the format (not layout) of a website. Web developers are responsible for programming (coding) the functionality of a website and keeping the site running effectively. They develop websites from the ground up, and are responsible for knowing the proper programming languages such as HTML, CSS, Javascript, XML, PHP, ASP, etc. So what are you, a Web Designer or a Web Developer?
