i really want to see the fd logo embroidery on the back. if it is obnoxiously big, i would like it less, but im still going to try and get one, they are sooo sick and i like it so much more than any other riding hoodie of the same price.
i'm not even gonna put in the mental effort to come up with some form of insult

We're glad you guys are pumped on the NS gear, we're hoping this will be just the start of lots of dope NS/FD collabo gear in the future.

To answer a few questions, these will ship around the first week of November, although it may be a week or two sooner. The FD embroidery on the back is very clean, pretty small (about 3-4 inches wide), down towards the bottom, off the side.

Feel free to email us with any questions or shoot us an NS message. Thanks!

To cover their costs before anything even gets produced. It's a shitty tactic but you guys are falling for it, so credit to FD on that one I guess.

I respectfully yet completely disagree that its a "shitty tactic" that solely out to deceive the consumer. Presales are like a kickstart with the risk entirely upon the company - if the company doesnt sell enough on presale, its the business on the hook, they have to eat the loss and produce just a few items for a few customers who have been patiently waiting for months. Presales have connected me to some of our best critics and fans, they select for people who really care about what they want and believe in the vision and accomplishment. Good businesses go on and build off that trust and repay it with the best product they can produce.

Credit to FD for using the same plan that many other brands used in their early years before they hit it big.

I applaud this unbiased approach. And coming from an ON3P member I know it holds more gravitas with these guys and thanks for going out on a limb and saying what needed to be said.

sorry man, but that makes no sense

presales are the ultimate way for a small company to increase cash flows with zero risk, if the product doesn't sell in the presale, they just don't place the extra orders and there is no risk of overstock.

I have nothing against first drop, and love NS with all my heart, but I don't think FD is being very honest with their customers here, they call this a "limited drop", implying that you have a chance to hold a unique piece of streetwear, when that isn't the case. I dropped the following comment on the NS article and FD was kind enough to reply, but I still disagree with their practice:

Comment:
they're decent, but way overpriced. It's 100 bucks with shipping to canada.
Also anyone notice how it doesn't say how "limited" they are, yet they're doing a pre order? They just produce how ever many are ordered plus a few for stock, not that limited

Reply:
Date Sent: Aug 10 2012 01:57:39 - (read) FD_Virtika --> dbchili
Hey, I saw your comment and just wanted to correct you. Our order for these has already been placed with our factory about 5 weeks ago so our quantities have been locked in long before we started taking pre-orders for them. They are a new product for us, and we weren't sure how successful they would be so we wanted to start out small. If they do really well, then we'll look into doing another production run for a mid-season restock...

My reply:
dbchili --> FD_Virtika
Based on the response thus far, you inevitably plan on doing another production run, which doesn't make them as "super limited" as you've specified. A better business practice would be to say "we are going to make X number" and then stick to it, no mid season restocks or anything else. Being more transparent with your business practices would help create demand in the future for your products.

I don't have anything against you guys, I'm just saying it's not ethically the best business move to increase available quantities of a product that was first pre-ordered by your most faithful customers on the understanding it was limited

But hey, you guys can do whatever you'd like

My only argument here is that leading people on with "limited release" isn't kind when you intend to expand your production run and make the pieces less limited. FD is yet to reply, but I'm all open to hearing further explanation

you sir are very correct. with your whole comment ^ (just don't want to create scroll-bombs). i do look forward to purchasing one one no matter what their tactic is. luckily, shipping in US isn't as expensive as what you have to pay. compared to what jiberish asks for their "pieces," i think this is the better buy. i know that the jiberish comparison is somewhat irrelevant.

Ginko is correct.

Pre-orders, if taken before production is started, are a great way to feel out demand, popular color-ways, popular sizing, etc. Unfortunately production times for clothing and outerwear are around 3-4 months, not including shipping. Our production for all products started a while ago, so all of our items (including the NS Collabo gear) are a risk for us. If they don't sell, then it's too bad for us.

With the NS gear, we started with small quantities this year because we weren't sure how well they would do. We most likely won't be doing any additional production runs this year because we'd rather keep them limited and have a 100% sell through.

Hope that inside perspective will help....

presales are the ultimate way for a small company to increase cash flows with zero risk, if the product doesn't sell in the presale, they just don't place the extra orders and there is no risk of overstock.
Let me explain this with an example.

A company decides they want to bring a product out for the winter. There is lead time on everything, from softgoods to skis. You need to order even further in advance if you're making whatever it is in house out of raw materials. No matter what, the company decides what they will build in advance, way before the presale ends in most cases. Its not a simple matter of ordering more if they sell well - in most cases, a restock wont arrive in time, and skiing is still a very seasonal sport. Take the company I work at - no matter what we sell preseason, we've already ordered materials to build a specific number of skis. Some of the material we're just getting now, in August, was ordered back in April. Presales do benefit the company, sure - they give the business an idea of whats hot and what people are interested it, and of course, cash on hand to cover costs during the half of the year when people are hiking and wakeboarding. Consumers get a benefit too - you get cheaper pricing and assurance that you get one, no matter how quick it sells out. If you're main argument is that it devalues the product... we are still talking ski gear here, right? If you're buying ski gear as an investment to net a profit when you sell it, you might want to try baseball cards, pretty sure they have better returns...

Hope I can get a busboy job Sunday and then I can make ze cash and buy so sick!
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep, and caverns old
The pines were roaring on the height
The wind was moaning in the night
The Fire was red, it flaming spread
The Trees like torches blazed with light.

Okay, if you have a 4 month lead time (and assuming FD does too) then I concede that you can't take advantage of the tactic I mentioned earlier

My main point here though is the restock thing. FD blaitantly said in their first response to me they would assess doing a restock if the hoodies did well. The hoodies have done well, and in looking at FDs history they have always done restocks in mid-winter from what I can remember, so I think it's fair to assume this would be the same. And so draws my point on being transparent with your customers. If you say you are going to produce a limited edition hoodie, state the number, and stick to that, otherwise it's going against those who supported you and ordered in the first place

As far as your argument on the valuation of ski gear, I agree, only an idiot would buy ski gear on the presumption it would increase in value. But that's not why people buy limited gear, it's for exclusivity, to know you'll probably be the only person with that piece of gear at your hill, or at least one of the few. On3p has done it with the jiberish x On3p graphic, no one expects those to appreciate, and yet we're all waiting cash in hand to be the first to order, because we want something no one else has.

Summary: If first drop wants to release a "super limited" hoodie, they should state just how "super limited" it is and then not restock, it's only fair to the people who ordered first and were first to support them. If they want to produce a lot of a hot hoodie, they should not state it's super limited, and customers can decide if they want to wear the same piece as 10 other kids at their mountain (not necessarily a bad thing)

Use a Drop of Water as a Macro Lens for Phone Photographs

Mar 12th 2012

Here’s a super cool trick: instead of buying a special macro lens for your smart phone, simply use a drop of water! Carefully place a drop of water over your lens, carefully invert the phone, and voila — instant macro shots with the cheapest lens you’ll ever own.
