So lately I've been trying this technique called lens whacking. If you have never heard of it then go search it and familiarize yourself. Basically you detach the lens allowing light to hit your sensor at different angles. I have found that it only works with some lenses, for instance, my canon 50mm f/1.8 won't work, evn with the focus set at infinity. But please post any of your attempts or successes using this technique, I would like to see it in action!

I've always been interested in this and never tried it though - I've been trying to think up a way to cover the mounts though so I don't have to worry about it.

played around with it a couple days ago with a nikon 35mm f/2, might post some shots if i get a chance. it was fun i guess but i don't see myself doing it more in the future

If you do it with the lens cap on, you can get some really interesting flares which you can then put on top of another video clip while editing and lower the opacity....it almost mimics the look of film burns

There's a few in there, anytime the flare/glare is pink it's been whacked. It's really fun, tricky handheld though.

Haha yeah same thing just different name. Phillip bloom calls it lens whacking, so does Max Erickson in the embedded video above. I'm not sure if the terms differ between photo/video...I'd be interested to find out though

haha true..but idk i love the feel of creating something totally different with just the body and lense and no PP. it gives the footage a warm, soft focused feeling with hues of purple and orange..idk what it is about it that I like so much.

Yeah, except you can't do it in post. Yes, you can composite in a light leak. But you don't get the dream like bokeh/dof that you do when you're doing it the real way.

My sensor self cleans..it is also fairly easy to get dust off a sensor just use a little squeeze bubble thing with a tube

This is a nice video...although I would be hesitant to free lens at a beach cuz of the salty air...sand..etc..

On one of the comments, the guys were talking about how there's a bunch of stuff behind the lenses on the C300 that protects the sensor, so of all cameras to bring to the beach and free-lens with, the C300 would appear to be a good one.


And really how hard is it to clean a sensor every once in a while? If you get a shot that would be impossible to achieve any other way, it seems worth it.
