I'm tired of plowing through the powder on my park skis. I want to get a good powder ski, without breaking the bank. Any help would be much appreciated.

I beg to differ. To the OP: you need to provide us with more information about what you want this ski to be able to do. Do you like skiing slow or fast? Do you prefer trees/chutes or open faces? Are you an expert skier or more of an intermediate? Do you care about skiing switch or do you ski forward all day long? Do you like to jib/pussyfooting your way around the mountain or do you charge the fuck out of everything and everything? Do you care about crud performance or is this ski only coming out in 2ft+? Where do you ski? How big are you? Blondes or brunettes? How old was your sister when she lost her virginity? Etc.

As you have given a lack of information it's difficult to give solid advice, but I am assuming since you're from a more park oriented background. In which case you may want to look into a freestyle backcountry designed ski, check the blog quoted in my sig for review of the 2013 Rocker2 122 and the ON3P Caylor

I will be using these skis obviously for powder days. I usually ski up a mt. Bohemia in the U.P of Michigan, where they don't groom any of their runs. I also ski a fair amount out west. I like to ski everything. I like skiing in the trees, I do a fair amount of switch riding, not too much. I would say i'm between intermediate and expert. I can charge some pretty decent lines, but nothing compared to the pros. I mostly like to charge lines, but sometimes when i'm tired I like to play around. I do care about crud performance because Mt. Bohemia gets its fair share of crud because they don't groom their runs, as well as when the back bowls of vail get rutted up. I am 5 foot 10, I weight about 165.
Basically I'm sick of going to Bohemia and out west and having my park skis plow through the powder. I spent a whole day at beaver creek last year swimming through the powder, and realized i need some fat skis.

you're not going to want a ski like the hellbent if you ski in michigan with the occasional trip out west. look at the line blend, on3p jeronimo, line sir francis bacon, moment pb&j, and k2 kung fujas, among others. they are all great skis that can handle pow but when it comes to skiing hardpack they are great in that category too.

For that description I would reccommend on3p caylors/jefferies, moment night trains, atomic bent chetlers/blogs, klint krypto, 4frnt yle/crj, rossignol sickle, salomon rocker 2, k2 pettitor/obsethed, others. Those would mostly be oriented towards skiing out west. I've never skied in Michigan but I assume if you're mostly skiing up there and not too much in the west you'll want something just a hair narrower. For example caylor=west preference. Jeffery=more even mix. Take your pick.

Why not jj's? The mountain I ski at in Michigan, gets a very good amount of snow. Its mostly powder there, and they don't groom the runs. Mt. Bohemia is basically at the very tip of the u.p and it gets blasted with some consistently. Plus I go out west almost every other weekend. I have read good things about the jj's.

JJ's are an extremely good ski in tight places like tree skiing. The 115mm waist (narrower for today's pow ski standards) combined with the extreme tapering of the tips and tails combined with a 14 something meter turn radius makes this ski able to turn on a dime. It's also super lightweight which helps with throwing it around. The problems arise with the JJ once you want to open things up and mach big GS turns, especially in variable conditions, as all of the aforementioned attributes that make the JJ excel in tight spots work against you. The lightness makes them get bounced around more, the super ultra short turn radius makes them hookey and unstable, and the extreme taper gives them a much shorter effective edge/running length. It's all in what you want. For some people the JJ is a godsend, but they definitely lack the stability (via weight, lack of sidecut, and tapering geometry) to truely charge. Make the decision based off of your skiing style, size, and where you ski.

JJs. You're talking about Michigan and occasional trips out west. You want a versatile ski that takes trees, powder, crud and back to the lift, that's JJ. If you were skiing only steeps in powder, or a lot of crud - then you can narrow the ski down to a charger or more floaty etc - but you're not. If you get a Hellbent or 125+ underfoot ski, you're going to get pissed swinging those things around in Michigan all winter.

if you've never rode 5 dimension skis, i'd be weary about buying JJ's. I personally hate the way that they ride, but it's all preference-- I had a roommate who had them and charged super hard! My recommendation would be an older obsethed, before they got super rockered and turned into a hellbent. They ski very traditional with minimal rocker

this. JJs are awesome skis and from what you described you really are not going to want skis that are wide like the hellbent. Take it from me, I've ridden Volkl chopsticks all over my home mountain anywhere from park to some gnarly BC lines and unless you're spending the majority of your time out in the BC skis that wide just become a burden.

I would say some AK JJs or just the 85 JJs i have the AKs and i love them. They ski shorter than they are i have no problem in tight trees and i can stomp them everywhere. I have had nothing but great days on them. Great buy go grab yourself a pair. If people are saying the AKs are too big for you fuck them. I have a few buddies who are 5'6 and 5'9 about 140-170 weight and they can slay them.

I think you should Check out the 2013 Line Influence 115. Enough width for pow, poppy for fun, and just stiff enough to charge. More of a directional ski, but should really dominate just about anything you throw at it. I think it's going to be a big shocker this year with how well it performs everywhere. Look it up and read some reviews.

Bent Chetlers are big mountain pow rippers that are actually not a half bad price. Saw them on evo and backcountry.com the other day for just over $400. Also the K2 Obsethed are on evo for like $399
