Hey guys, so I'm a 6 ft 175 lb teenager who's been skiing since the age of two. I got in to powder freestyle skiing four years ago when I bought a pair of Armada JJs (175 cm). These skis have brought my skiing to a whole new level but I'm starting to suspect they're a little too short as well as being pretty beaten up. So I have two questions:

1: Skis are expensive. My JJ's are still skiable but they're beaten up and starting to get more squirrely the bigger and better I get, due to the short length. Is this enough of a reason to justify buying a new pair?

2: If I do decide to drop some money on new skis, I want to get the perfect pair for my style. I'm looking for something a little more stable (maybe slightly stiffer than the JJs?) that can handle big drops but can still spin easy (cork 7s, double flips, etc...). I'm thinking something like the Moment Deathwish, ON3P Caylors, or Salomon Rocker 2 but am open to suggestions. Being able to land switch in powder is mandatory as well as being versatile enough to handle a little hard pack (not much). Also what size? I think somewhere around a 185 cm should be about right, but I'm not completely sure. Any help is appreciated.

I'm thinking 190's for sure. 191 caylor would probably be perfect for you

Wouldn't the 191 be kinda hard to throw big tricks? I've never skied anything longer than my JJs so I'm hesitant to go that much bigger..

For ski sizes anything like above 183 and between 190 would be fine for you. For skis, you could get the JJ again or even the AK JJ if you want. But if you are looking for a new ski, Atomic Bent Chetler, (I don't know the stiffness compared to the JJ) Rossignol S7, (The thinner tail might be a problem landing switch in pow maybe not) and the ON3P Caylor as you mentioned. There are many other options out there. If I were your height and weight and in your situation I would get the Caylor. That's just me though.

Definitely 190's this years magic j is a 190 I believe and flex for bent chetlers vs jj's = jj's are much stiffer underfoot and at the tails but the chettys are slightly stiffer at the tips. As far as the s7 goes good luck landing switch

Yeah I'm not really a fan of Rossignols skis.. The Benchetlers and Caylors both look like pretty solid skis, but I'd probably choose the Caylors over the Benchetlers. Any opinions on the Moment Night Train?

Moment Night Trains are soooo much fun super playful and stable ski but when you say freestyle what do you mwan exactly because moment also makes the Ghostchants which are slightly larger than the nigh trains but rockered way more. They would be better than the nigh trains for lading switch and what not but not for stability and charging.

By freestyle, I mean I'll be throwing tricks off cliffs and powder kickers. The Ghost Chant seems too soft for my taste, but the Night Train is definitely an option.

Why? They both have similar dimensions and similar rocker designs, although the moments are flat underfoot while the caylors have slight camber. Is there a significant difference in weight? Difference in construction? The caylors definitely have sicker graphics for sure though lol.

They have much better construction and will ski much better everywhere you are. Ask anyone who has them and they will tell you why they are one of the best skis made

Ok ok I see this argument but I know for a fact that moment construction has only gotten better. In fact it is probably better now notice I say now than on3p. Let's face it moment is a larger company with more money to throw towards better construction. On the other hand if he wanted a better all around ski I would go with the moment bibby's they are amazing so so diverse. You can ski the Bibby as long as it's not ice out to the deepest powder.

I would still say on3p has better construction and saying that moment is heftier doesn't justify anything. On3p has better construction than most big companies out there. I actually can't name a ski company that uses better construction

Still no solid proof. Not trying to argue with you just going to say that moments construction is not bad. I no they have had issues in the past but just go Moment \m/

Alright there is no way to prove it yet and I think on3p is a bit overhyped on this site even though they make amazing skis. I skied with a guy who had night trains and he absolutely loved them and I hope to ski them next season but from experience I just have to back up on3p

So with that argument, would you say that suspects are a superior product to both Moment and ON3P?

Even though I love on3p products a few company's that use fantastic construction not nesscicarily better but I think equal would be pm gear, folsom, and praxis.

you might like the next size up in the jj or even the new magic j. if 175 is what you are used to, be careful taking too big of a sizing jump. certainly your size puts you into the mid 180s - low 190s. if you like light skis stay with armada. if youre willing to sacrafice a bit of weight, there are other good options.

PM is kind of notorious for delams. There are plenty of people that drink to kool-aid but it's not all it's cracked up to be.

So I have two questions: 1: Skis are expensive. Any help is appreciated.

i have skied both the rocker2 122 and rhe caylor, at 5'10 180lbs I prefer the caylor. For a short review of both the caylor and the rocker2 122 (next season's) check the blog quoted in my sig. If you're  looking for a multi-page review, blister has really comprehensive one. If you've got any questions just pm me or comment on the and I'll get on to it.

I'd go with something at least 188. Anything rockered is going to rub shorter. Your skiing strength should help you throw tricks and help get those skis around. Look into something like 4FRNT YLE, ON3P Caylor, K2 Petittor, Surface New Life, or Atomic Benchetlers. All of those skis are tailored for big mountain freestyle, are will be available in the 188 range (YLE being the smaller of the sizes)

184 would be too short. I did a season last year on the 194s, they were really stable, te stiffness helped

Good point my friend! Even though I have never had this problem, I still believe pm gear does have very high build quality maybe not on3ps level but vey close regarded. I still love my pm's though

Yeah all of Eric Pollards pro models are super awesome skis, but I ski at Mt Hood Meadows (where Eric Pollard grew up skiing) and every other skier and their son here owns a pair of EP Opus's or EP Pros. Haha so while they're a sick ski, I'm kinda tired of seeing them and hearing about them.
