I might be interested in the switch over to a gh2 from t3i. Could someone tell me the main diifferences other then crop mode and lcan handle moire better? Seems like gh2 build quality is poor. Also, what mount of lenses are best to use on it?

why wouldn't they? i mean, i would of course take the GH2 over the T2i at this point, but the T2i is so cheap. it can't really be beat for the price. but the t3i or t4i is a different matter

I was kind of referring to the entire rebel lineup. Like, for video a gh2 is a much better choice, and for photo the 30-50d, 5dc, and 1d2(n) are all way better choices. The t2-4i and 60d are oddities that are only kind of alright at both. Just my thoughts.

ignoring the fact that many Txi buyers don't even know the GH2 exists, i still think it's price. the GH2 is quite expensive compared to a T2i, especially for somebody just looking to get into video. i would also say that as far as DSLR video goes, the T2i is more than only kind of alright. it's still an awesome video DSLR imo, it's just that the GH2 is better.

$800 with a lens after the rebate isn't bad when a t3i with kit lens is $750.

did the GH2 price drop? i definitely thought it was more expensive.

but as i said, the T3i and T4i are a different story since they are closer in price to the GH2. and yeah i know nothing about photography specs for any of those cameras.

... i mean the t3i is 750 with the kit lens, the gh2 is 799. The fact someone would buy a 60d/7d over the gh2 is also very curious unless of course you wanted a solid photo cam too, i don't think the gh2 is the greatest photocam.

People don't wanna buy the gh2 because 1. its different 2. its panasonic 3. it has a 2x crop. People freak out because of these reason and thing they'll be safer with a t2i. Truly though, the gh2 is the best video dslr on the market, period. There are some AMAZING m4/3 lenses out there and then the gh2 can be adapted to use any fucking lens too because of the smaller sensor.

But eheath, what about my fish eye? it wont look as wide!

oh but it will. a 10mm on a gh2 is 20mm FF equivalent while on a t2i its 16mm equivalent. 4mm difference, thats NOTHING. I shoot 11mm on my fs100 (1.5 crop so roughly 16.5mm) and its TOO FUCKIN WIDE. I'd shoot a number of things at 16mm, which is 24mm FF! And that is still very wide and with a 10mm, the gh2 is wider than that. AND THEN guess what? the long is epic! and then with the sensor crop mode too, insane. The gh2 was made to film skiing and yet no one does it. If I owned a dslr right now, i wouldve sold it and buy a gh2 months ago.

People don't wanna buy the gh2 because 1. its different 2. its panasonic 3. it has a 2x crop.
It's mainly three reasons:

1. Panasonic dropped the ball marketing the GH2, while Canon killed it at marketing their DSLRs.

2. People are afraid of the smaller sensor, because they think bokeh and DOF have anything to do with quality footage. Even then, the m4/3 is capable of shallow DOF that is indistinguishable from APS-C.

3. People are under the impression that there isn't quality/variety of glass for m4/3 sensor. Again, this is Canon's brilliant marketing at work. They've convinced people that L lenses are not only good for video, but that they are superior to older and cheaper alternatives. Truth is, there is a much larger variety of lenses for the m4/3 system, and a larger percentage of those lenses are more cinematic (in terms of optics and build) than the DSLR lenses. Sure, there aren't dozens of UWA lenses available, but the 3 that are available absolutely destroy any Sigma/Rokinon/Canon/Nikon UWA. Same with with the Voigtlander primes, or the Canon FD lenses, which produce some of the best images I've ever seen from a camera, DSLR or otherwise.

The m4/3 crop factor is roughly 1.9x, versus the 1.6 of an APS-C. That's such a miniscule difference that can be solved by taking one step backwards. I've used a Tokina 11-16 on both a GH2 and a 7D and they both felt the same. I can still stand on the lip of a jump three feet away from the skier and get everything in frame.

In case it wasn't mentioned, Canon DSLRs only have ~700 lines of native resolution. Add moiré and false color effects and you'll have a pretty difficult time seeing details. Not to mention the 5DmkIII's backass way of treating the symptom of moiré rather than the disease and adding an anti-aliasing (softening) filter. The GH2 puts out ~900 lines of native sensor resolution (like the Sony EX1/EX3), and the difference is huge. Here's a little test I did comparing my 7D to my GH2. Same lenses, settings, etc.

this is mostly exactly what i was saying. my point in saying the t3i is a different story is that they're so close in price that there's no reason to get the t3i over the gh2.

i don't think you can compare the t2i and gh2 at this point because of how cheap you can snag a T2i for. for somebody who thinks all they need to purchase when buying a DSLR is the body and kit lens, i can see why they would choose a T2i seeing as it is a few hundred less than the gh2.

If anything, telephoto is where the GH2 shines the most. 2x crop is amazing for telephoto, and ETC mode is no gimmick. You get a total of 4x extension with no loss in light or image quality. I can take any 200mm telephoto without CA in the center and get astounding IQ at 800mm.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/panasonic_gh2_11_mode_revealed.shtml

Right now, I'm using a Lumix 20mm 1.7, Tokina 11-16, and the aforementioned Pentax. Right now I'm hunting for a telephoto. Still torn between the Nikon 80-200 2.8 and the Lumix 100-300.

Canon fd's and FD-L's for sure. The canon FD 17mm F4 and 50mm F1.4 s.s.c. are both fantastic lenses.

ahh alright thanks. I might wait for the GH3 when it comes out this summer.

Sorry for not being educated with adapting lenses, but could you just use a foodidox adapter for your nikon glass? or does it need to be a novaflex etc? also, can you still use AF, and set aperture in the camera?

why is nikon good for a gh2 vs just using canon mount lenses?

Is there a lens adapter that lets you use EF lenses on the gh2? I don't want to move away from canon for stills, but I am considering buying a gh2 for video use.

Nikon is good because many of their lenses have manual aperture rings. The fatal flaw of Canon L glass is that it's a closed system; you need either a Canon camera just to change aperture, or an expensive metabones electronic adapter. All these workarounds when they could've just instilled a simple aperture ring in the first place... Canon FD lenses are great though. They're fully manual, and have a better look than L glass in my opinion.

However Nikon G mount lenses don't have an aperture ring. But unlike Canon, the AF motor is in the body instead of the lens. Because of this, AF is controlled via a physical pin rather than electronic sensors. This makes adapting a simpler, mechanical process. You can use a cheap Fotodiox adapter that controls aperture physically using that little pin. You can't set aperture in-camera, though I never understood why anyone would want to. And since there's no Nikon AF motor in the GH2, you can't AF with adapted lenses. The GH2 actually has a really good AF system for native m4/3 lenses, but again I don't see the point in AF either.

All my adapters are Fotodiox. They are solid and well made, although the Nikon G one isn't as nice as the adapters that don't have moving parts. There is a small light leak in my adapter, which I covered mostly with black tape. While it's a flaw, I actually really like it. I get these wild rainbow flares when the sun hits at just the right angle. My biggest complaint with the adapter is that the aperture control ring is horribly damped. A 45 degree rotation will cover the lens' entire aperture range. At most it's a minor annoyance.

You can't set aperture in-camera, though I never understood why anyone would want to. ever tried any rokinon lenses with the gh2? sounds like they would be a perfect fit with their manual aperture rings, and i've only had good experiences with the 35 1.4 I used.

Canon fd's and FD-L's for sure. The canon FD 17mm F4 and 50mm F1.4 s.s.c. are both fantastic lenses.
I am going to be using the lenses for primarily video and those are good lenses for that?

They look beautiful for photography and I am pretty happy about the price of them because they are so inexpensive, but will they hold up well for video use?
anyone up for some side booters?

No, but many others have. The only thing I can see as being an issue is that the Rokinon lenses are pretty large for what they do, which can put stress on the mount or lead to stability issues for longer focal lengths. My 20mm 1.7 is a great prime lens, and about the size of a cookie.

and I'd just like to point out that Canon has a shitty anti-aliasing filter on the 5dIII, it's probably the least-sharp canon camera out there from this alone. Justsayin.jpg

I fucking LOVE my Samyang (Rokinon) 35mm f/1.4. It rarely comes off my 5D classic. You can really do it all with this lens.

If a lens is good for photography is will be even better for video. Photos are a higher resolution than 1080p video.

although when it comes to video you have to take speed into account much more, as well as the smoothness of focus rings

just going to try and clear a few things up here. the gh2 is not fully weather sealed, and it doesn't have a full magnesium alloy body. neither does the t2i. the evf is awesome, gives you a constant preview of what your footage will look like, and you can use it while you shoot. the mf assist is also great, it is very easy to use and it zooms way in so you can make sure your subject is in focus. a weather sealed body is expected, because the new lenses from panasonic are weather sealed (and they are sharp wide open). thats all I can think of right now, but feel free to post here or pm me with questions

did the GH2 price drop? i definitely thought it was more expensive. but as i said, the T3i and T4i are a different story since they are closer in price to the GH2. and yeah i know nothing about photography specs for any of those cameras.
i believe it's always been around that price

For you guys saying you want a body for photo, just get a used nikon photo body (d2, d3) on the cheaper side, invest in nikon lenses, and use a nice adapter with a gh2 for video. This actually isn't a bad way to go now that I think about it. Too bad I like canon's offerings and am happy with what I need from them.

If I owned a dslr right now, i wouldve sold it and buy a gh2 months ago.
ay ay I film skiing with the gh1 !!!

but yoh, for a really wide lens what would you suggest? I currently have whatever came with the cam, a 14-42 lumix lens with auto focus and shit, and then a nikon adapter to 4/3 with a standard nikon 50mm on it.

yes the 14mm is nice n wide, but id love to try something even wider when I have some money.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/833415-REG/Bower_SLY75B43_7_5mm_f_3_5_FISHEYE_LENS.html

is this the best way to go? or would it be worth it trying to get a nikon lens to use with my adapter? i don't know too much about glass quality, but i do know the same factory builds that 7.5mm lens for VARIOUS photo companies.

thoughts? suggestions?
