What is the best ISO to shoot at for 60d?

What is the best ISO to shoot at with the 60d?

I've been researching and i cant seem to find the answer i'm looking for.
Can someone please explain to me native ISO and what it means? Ive read that some people think that shooting at multiples of 100 is better while others say multiples of 160 are better. And ISOs like 125 and 250 are "stretched" and "pulled". Can someone explan what this means? Thanks!

160 always unless you absolutely need to boost it up.

I've read about these iso's and it seems like for canons it goes like this:
iso 100,200,400,800..= best dynamic range
160,320,640..= best noise performance

You need ML to shoot native ISO with the canon EOS series. But yea, use 160, 320 etc

You're right.

100 and it's increments are native ISO's; this is where ISO's perform best.
160 etc are all native ISO -1/3 stop. So for example, ISO 160 is native ISO 200 - 1/3 stop = ISO 160.
The native ISO - 1/3 stop are the ISO's with the lowest noise, but also the least dynamic rang (which is quite logical).

You also have native ISO + 1/3 stop, like 250 or so. Avoid those. They're total crap.

This is only for video though, right? For photography I don't think it matters, I usually shoot at 200, I find my 60d performs better (DR, Colour, overall IQ) at 200 than 100 for photo, never shot at 160. And then I use usually use the native ISO's as I go up.

So I did some more research and it actually does matter if your shooting JPEG (I have no idea why you would unless your shooting burst), for RAW it doesn't matter.

so what about for video? whats the difference between 100, 200, 400, 500, etc and 160, 320, 640, etc?

i usually shoot 160,320 and only seldomly 640 for video on my 60D. i know that 320 is native and the multiples but then again iso isn't something i know a whole lot about as far as DR. i just try and avoid any noise

yes, this is my thread. yo said for raw photos, it dosent matter and for jpeg it does. you never said anything about video

Okay, that was a little vague. Video records in whatever format like a Jpeg would for photography. RAW is not an image, it's a data file, it allows you to make changes to the file like you would in camera. You can't shoot 'RAW' video. Its kinda complicated but all you really need to know that each ISO will work the same for Jpeg as it will for Video, for RAW it doesn't matter.

yeah thats right, only red's shoot raw video and some others. but yeah those are comparable

How do you set native ISO's with Magic Lantern? I normally shoot 100 ISO but I want to try 160.

pull up the ML menu, scroll over to the "expo" tab. Highlight the ISO option and click set. then you can scroll through the ISOs using set and the play button. The native ISOs show up in green and the non-native isos show up in yellow. This is on a 60d so im not sure if its different on other cameras

Haha, yes. 7d, 60d, and t2i hav the same sensor and almost exactly the same noise performance.

I go without reserve up to 640 on my 5d, and don't have any problem going to 1600 or even 3200 when necessary
