Compared to school this is 16 weeks hands on fully engaged work with professionals. Internships are becoming available the whole time. The people you would meet during this would probably be worth the 15k by itself. I bet you come out of this with a better job than if you went to film school for 4 years. It seems to me that there are definitely some things to look at seriously in there.

I am pretty sure you could get that back fairly quickly judging by the skills obtained. Again you would have to look at this with a business sense and as an investment.

I mean, if you owned a RED already this would be a good idea, but i think dropping 15k on this course and not owning a RED isn't exactly "useful". No client cares if you can operate one, they care about what you own.

For those of us that do not have the 30-50k it would take to get a red setup this program could technically put you on your way. Depending on what you charge for projects you can factor in the rental price of a Scarlet or Epic and already have the expertise needed to operate it. Hopefully putting you on your way to purchasing one. Ya know? growing a business...

First things first, clients should NOT care what you own. I know tons of dudes who shoot all of their projects and the only thing they own is a fast Mac Pro and maybe a handful of lenses... Every time a job comes their way, they include rental prices like a regular production.

Thats how I work with my Epic/Scarlet, people have to rent the camera for the day, then rent me to run that camera for the day. You should price out all your gear that you use as if you DO NOT own it.

You could argue that owning a camera can get you more work, but I have had people who have hired me and then asked me to shoot something on a Phantom, and I don't own one of those...

At the end of the day, its about skills and storytelling over what gear you own.

As far as REDUCATION X goes, it is a very interesting idea. I would argue that it could be better then 4 years at film school. The idea behind the program is that to get accepted you have to pitch a project that you want to make (in the end you would use this project to be your calling card). Another thing to think about is the networking possibilities associated with this course, the people you will meet and be surrounded by.

I feel a lot of filmmakers underestimate how important networking actually is. There is an old saying "it's not what you know, it's who you know". Think about the big directors who are associated with RED, and whats to say that they won't stop by and see what students in this program are working on? It is at Red Studios in Hollywood so I think the chances are pretty good.

this actually looks like a great way to get your headed on your way in the industry. I might see what it takes to apply, I haven't started college applications for the fall/don't think I'll be headed off to school for another year, why not try this? I have some money for schooling that could possibly be used for this.

Depends how knowledgeable they are. Most of the time they only care about the specifications for the final product. "1080! Full HD" is one I hear a lot. But they don't care how you do it. If your anus shot HD video they wouldn't care, just so long as the product is what they wanted.

well im speaking more from stories not personal experience. I know guys who didnt get jobs because they didnt have a 7d but they had an hpx170... shit like that ya know? OMG DOF. but i mean, having a RED is a serious leg up even on an fs100 when it comes to getting jobs IMO, but i mean obviously a 7d is good enough for most of those jobs too but now days, i feel like if you wanna be doing "big time" its about either owning/renting a red. I dunno, im in over my head with this thread right now. I really just wanted to express that paying 15k for a reducation 16 wk class isn't going to just make it for you in the industry.

I see what you're saying but someone could also argue that 4 years of film school isn't going to "just make it for you in the industry".

Everyone does things different, some people go to school, some just do seminars and others don't do school at all.

I have good friends who have film degrees and most of them are not working with anything to do with film (one works as a receptionist, another is going back to law school) because they couldn't find any work...

Film school does not guarantee that you'll get work, and there is no guarantee that REDUCATION X will get you a job, all it gives you is a different option to choose other then traditional school and internships.

It's not about how you start, its about how you finish.

Fear and Loathing in Art and Business

Jul 9th 2012

Why do artists loathe business? Why does business fear art? Each side holding the other back for no good reason. Conventional thinking declares that real art is ?pure? and free of commercial motivations – that business corrupts art. Conversely, business minds often seem to fear art because it?s perceived lack of a road map for [...]

The Gathering ? Day 2 ? Red Mountain, BC

Apr 9th 2010

Day 2 of The Gathering was a pretty good one.  We started out early skiing powder at Red Mountain in Rossland, BC doing laps on the Motherload chair.  It had been about 10 years since I’d skied at Red and man I forgot how good that place is.  Such fun, steep terrain.  Some of the [...]
