I just watched the TGR almost live series featuring Clayton Vila and Cam Riley, very sick but then I discovered I do have some issues with it.

A handful of smaller filming crews, Nipwitz, Stept,4bi9 and a handful on Quebec crews, can't think of anymore at the moment, have very dope emerging pro riders that are often recruited by big name production companies such as TGR, poorboyz and level 1. I understand this often gets recognition for that skier and allows them to travel to new places to ski but something about it bothers me.

The ski film industry is such an oligopoly. There is no depth to it.

These talented and influential riders have the potential to bring their new production companies to the forefront of the market. I can't help to think that;

1) larger budget companies steal these riders away from their small scale production companies, the riders are losing time that could be put into their segment with their current production company to the big guns who ultimately wont produce as good of a segment of them.

2) Smaller production companies lose exclusiveness to their riders that have a chance to propel their company to the top of the game. Why buy the small scale movie when you can see the same riders in a large budget production made with better technology and featuring a larger roster of "pro" skiers. I think this would cause the smaller production company to ultimately lose sales of their films.

With this in mind there may now be a huge loss of incentive for sponsors to hook them up with large travel budgets which would give them access to new terrain and ultimately make their movies more original and entertaining. This access to new terrain provided by sponsors essential for increased sales and development of the production company.

I'm not hating on any skiers decisions to work with other production companies, they may not have even taken this into consideration or have interest in developing their production company into a big name. I just don't see their decision to do this as wise to their own production companies. It does make sense for them to do this from a business standpoint especially in the short run. What I am taking about is the development of the ski film industry in the long run and why we havent seen a large number of new North American film companies emerge in the industry. ( I can't speak for the rest of the world as I am not as familiar.)

These are just a couple thoughts that recently hit me. What do you have to say NS?

it's a pretty simply equation. bigger film company + more exposure = bigger dollars from sponsors

what a lot of the young kids don't understand is that the big guys like MSP, Poor Boyz, TGR, and Level 1 have all been around for 10 years or more. over that time these companies have gained respect from the industry by proving they have the staying power to create something esthetically pleasing year after year while not just using the exact same formula to create their films.

a lot of the smaller guys haven't really created their own identity yet by doing something different so they aren't attracting the huge budgets to make their films.

the production company that really stood out this year was Sherpas Cinema. they did something that most haven't done yet by tapping into the touring side of skiing. the segment of the market is taking off and no one has really utilized it in a film that wasn't geared toward the telemarking crowd.

just my thoughts

This is one of the best, most intelligent threads I've ever seen on NS, some great points and ideas being discussed here.

If I can throw in my own 2cents, I love filming with a crew like 4bi9, it consists of all my friends, we are more or less on the same page, and my number one goal is usually to create one solid segment that I can be proud of, and I get to work closely with Aj and Napes on the editing side to make it something that truly represents what I'm trying to portray. I've always imagined this is better than having several mediocre "segments" spread out among different companies. Now, i'm not a good example to speak on this, because no large production company has ever "called me up to the big leagues" but it's something I dream about and hope for every year.

As a skier (who is more focused on filming than on competing) that's the ultimate satisfaction, to get into one of the big movies you've been watching since you were a kid, right? And sometimes there is a feeling that the smaller companies may not be getting any bigger, maybe it's in one's best interest to progress on to new, bigger things. Even though we're all doing this for the love of skiing, at some point you've gotta eat and pay the bills. I think Cam and Clayton have a better perspective than anyone on this issue, they produce amazing, full, banger segments for Stept, meanwhile creating a solid showing in both PBP and now TGR. It's the whole package, and it's gotta be satisfying as hell.

I thought it was summer. This thread is way too reasonable

But on a serious note, thats a very interesting outlook that I had never really thought. A very well written and well thought out rant or whatever you want to call it.

The SAGA is LETHAL and TREW

From here we embark. I proposed a gear test starting with four companies, SAGA OUTERWEAR, LETHAL DESCENT, FIRST DROP, AND TREW OUTERWEAR. For those of you that like my rants, I decided to do you a favor. Every month or so I will re-post an old rant in this blog and link to the original thread that I created. Why is this important? First, you don't have to dig though the forums if you want to read or re-read my stuff. Second, It makes me the center of attention which I think is awesome. Third, I...aw to hell with it, thats all I got.
