announced their summer rates today.... you guessed it! Bend over, they're going in dry.

Full summer bike park pass at $250. If you have a 11/12 Winter pass, you only have to fork over $200! $35 for a day ticket on weekends. This compared to last year where if you had a winter pass you rode in the summer for free, and day tickets were $15.

Don't get me wrong- I knew this was coming and I realize you can't make improvements/upgrades without capital. That being said, this is just like last winter where they basically doubled their rates all in one fell swoop... apparently the idea of gradually increasing rates is non-existent to Talisker. For comparison's sake I think a Whistler Bike Park pass is $400 or $500 and Canyons, while making strides, is nowhere even close to that level yet.

I'll still be up there and I'll probably end up forking it over, but damn they better keep building new features and improving the existing stuff with these kinda prices.

Holy shit I hate Talisker. I love Canyons, but I fucking hate Talisker.
Do you also by chance wake up each day absolutely shocked that the stairs you took upstairs the night before now work in the reverse direction as well? - fujarome

Considering last year almost everyone who used it used it for free they need to get some money out of it... comparing it to whistler makes no sense they have a TON more people go there on vacation and pay for daily tickets all the time so they can afford to charge less. You are supporting the first valid attempt at a DH bike park here in UT, if you are a DH biker you shouldn't be whining about the MASSIVE improvements they're making to our local scene for a few hundred of your dollars.

Haha it feels weird to say that Deer Valley is a better value. I think their day passes are like 25 or 28 or something. Definitely more DH than FR, although Homeward Bound has some legit ladder-bridges.

It feels weird cause it's wrong. DV cost $25 or whatever it is... for zero good freeride trails.Paying for nothing is not a very good value. You can't even remotely compare the amount of man made features. All DV has is a couple XC trails that happen to point down the hill. If you prefer that feel free to not clog up the line at Canyons though. I don't get why people don't understand how much money and work goes into the insanely awesome trails Canyons is starting to build. Sure they are small and short now, but they've only been building for one summer, and they got a ton done last summer. If they can keep up the pace for a few years it will be absolutely epic, and the ticket prices will level out as more people start to come and the park is more established. I just hope it doesn't end up getting run into the ground and shut down entirely by the bizarre management.

I get all the work that goes into the Canyons, but the actual DH trails at Deer Valley (Thieves Forest, Fire Swamp, NCS, Devo, and kinda Freestyle and Twist and Shout) are, in my opinion, more worth the money. But then again, I like DH a little more than Freeride. I'm just saying for that amount of money, I would rather go ride some good DH.

Has anyone been up recently? How was it? Trying to decide if I should buy DV ticket or Canyons ticket for next week.

Was up there all day yesterday. It's in awesome shape. They re-built Rally Cat from top to bottom with bigger jumps, wood features, and a massive wall ride at the bottom.

DV is beat. Place could be so good but they just don't give a sh*t about the downhill scene/trails up there any more. Devo and NCS are fun but you have to hike for both of those.

Awesome thanks!

Yeah I remember some of the features DV had were laughable, but some of the pro lines on NCS are fucking outrageous.

No problem. As a follow up I rode the lifts at DV the day after I posted that. With the lack of snow this winter or rain this spring it's already dusty as hell. We did a few Fire Swamp laps and a couple on Homeward Bound (their "park" if you wanna call it that..) but got bored and left. Features are falling apart, berms aren't maintained, etc.

Hit Devo to Pointy Rocks last night which is in good shape, but again since you have to hike a bit from Silver Lake to get there there's no point in paying for a lift ticket. Park a car at the bottom of Snow Park Lodge and then take another up to Silver Lake or just catch the free bus that started running up there again and just lap Devo/NCS for free.

I went up there today with one of my friends who had some free passes, I thought it was pretty good. Lapped Thieves maybe 5 times (and yes, it was quite dusty--had a dirt-stache going after every lap), did a couple Homeward Bound laps (you're right, it's not really a park, more just a beginner trials trail. Still pretty fun even without the flow between features you see at Canyons), then went Devo to old NCS to a new section of trail off Pointy Rocks. It was the best day biking I've had all year.
I do however think that trail maintenance is actually pretty good, especially after passing 2 or 3 separate groups of patrollers/diggers fixing sections of Thieves. At least compared to trail maintenance at PCMR, maintenance at Deer Valley is great I would say. Like yuou said, it's pretty dusty, but there's not much they can do about that until it rains (although it did look like they might have watered a bit of Thieves in the middle section).

Ah good to know- like I said I hit Thieves before they'd put any work into it and between the dust and random sh!t scattered in the trail it was sketchy as hell. Fire Swamp was decent. And yeah the Devo--> Pointy Rocks section has become by far my favorite lap up there. Flows well, berms have enough of a trough now that you can track a line through them, the little launch off the road is fun, then the technical section at the very end is nice. But since it's mostly pretty chill it means I can bring all my XC-riding friends with me since they don't wanna go anywhere near NCS/Thieves/Fire Swamp. Thankfully I can usually get DV passes for free off some of my friends who work there so at least I'm not paying $36 for it. Free is always fun.

I hit a couple Moosehouse laps off Town Lift at PCMR earlier this week and that level of dust is nuts- it's truly like skiing/riding deep, brown pow. We need rain baaaaaaaad.

Does anyone know if you can hike the Canyons bike park? I just picked up a DH bike and wanna test it out. I'm thinking of hiking from the base of the mountain to the base of high meadow and go from there, which is going to be a bitch but I really wanna ride!

So...is it legal to hike the bike park even if it's closed?

^ I doubt it, they could call it trespassing if they wanted. Unless the hiking and biking trails are public access, or the resort is still open (even if the lifts are closed), I think they could pull that on you. Not entirely sure on that, so don't quote me on it.

PCMR is still open for biking until the 21st, and there's still Trailside and Arcylon if you're just looking in the PC area.

Where I grew up the only DH I had was my local ski area. It was only open every other weekend. If I wanted to ride DH any other time I would have to hike the hill, I'm used to hiking far distances and have no problem with it.

Yeah- this. Honestly it would be easier to just drive up Guardsman's, hike your rig up Puke Hill, ride the Wasatch Crest Trail, then when you drop in at Canyons just ride the park down. I see guys on Crest on DH bikes sometimes, and it can't be too fun in a couple spots, but it's mostly mellow and sure as hell beats hiking up f'ing Lookout into Red Pine.
