Hey Aussies

Im looking for some guidance from the locals

I've lived in Canada my entire life, but I have an australian citizenship, and recently received my Adult Australian Passport.

I will be moving to Whistler in early October 2012, as I have a Snowmaking job lined up, so that I can spend the season shredding in Whistler!
-But this is 5-6 months away.

I haven't been back to Aus since I was about 5, so I Definately want to come back and explore my home-land. (was born in Wagga Wagga)

- For the time in between ski seasons, I was thinking about heading to Aus to backpack around for a month, get all my Aussie documentation, a bank account -- everything i need to be a citizen.

-But after that month, It'll be back to worrying about money. So I was wondering about the Oil Rigs. I hear its great money. How hard would it be to get into a job like that?
Any information on the oil rigs is WHAT IM LOOKING FOR!
My goal is to work for them for 2-4 months before returning to canada. Is this an unreasonable goal?
ANY information or insight is appreciated!!!

I also plan on attending USyd, 2 years away though, so getting my documentation in check, and exploring before buckling down for school seems ideal. When i return for my education, it'll be for 8+ years.

I don't think it is as easy as everyone thinks.  They turn a lot of people away who just rock up expecting a job.  Do you have engineering/heavy machinery experience? that would obviously help.. otherwise you're better off working your ass off in retail/hospo for a couple of months..

Photographer Takes to the Sky After Being Denied Access to Oil Mines

May 21st 2012

When photographer Robert Johnson of Business Insider was denied so much as a tour of the Alberta Oil Sands, he could have given up. Instead he chose a more… aerial approach, renting a Cessna 172 to secretly photograph the secretive operation from just over 1,000 feet. The Alberta Oil Sands are the second largest oil [...]

The Fancy Robotic DSLR Rigs Covering the Olympic Games

Jul 20th 2012

This behind-the-scenes video by the Associated Press gives a neat look at the various robotic cameras the agency will use at the London Olympic Games (earlier this month we shared some of Reuters’ rigs). Fancy remote-controlled rigs will allow for many photographic firsts, as cameras will be found in locations that were previously inaccessible.
