im thinking about coaching tennis in the summer, just wondering if any of you tennis players feel that the shoulder muscle  upper body strength you build from tennis detracts at all from your skiing ability, as opposed to inlining in the summer, which definitely helps your sking ability once you hit the snow

they dont go hand and hand like skateboarding and snowboarding for sure, but do you think tennis in the summer would be like a figure skater bodybuilding in the offseason?

uhh I play tennis. and I'm sure a 12 oz racket will not get u as body building lol. anyway i would think playing tennis would strengthen your legs and improve your stamina thus possibly bettering your skiing? idk just my thoughts

its not necessarily the weight of the racquet. If you get to a higher level then the constant swinging of an object so fast puts serious wear on some of your muscles. also, the swings arent always natural to your body; say if you're sprinting for the ball and you barely make it, no one has time to do a reg forehand correctly.

to OP, nah it wont interfere with your skiing that much. unless you get hurt, you should be fine.

there is going to be absolutely no effect

i play hockey and lacrosse all summer long, and i lift all summer long as well. it hasn't effected my skiing at all. if anything, a strengthened core from the swinging motion will help you whip spins around faster.

i think any muscle development will contribute to your skiing abilities. stronger muscles means better control over your body

i would snap a 12 oz raquet in half just by hitting the ball, i use a fed weight raquet, and yeah it def effects ur muscle distribution

have you ever looked closely at the size difference between left arm right arm of tennis players? they look like a giant arm with a person attached to it. thats what im afraid of... screwing up my arm strenth neutrality

Having played and coach tennis all my life, I dont find it makes any difference. I dont have one huge arm either. Its going to keep you active and in shape, thats the most important thing.

What stick are you swinging?

I think this is what the op fears

if anything i think tennis will keep you in shape and maybe give you some core strength, which will help you pipe and jump game a lot, bigger arms wont hinder you at all either

i played tennis competitvely for a long time, played a bit of college tennis, and coahed tennis for about 6 years of my life. it will not affect your skiing haha. but if this is your first time coaching, you will be playing a lot less than you think, and feeding a lot more balls than you think. are you coaching at clinics or doing individual lessons? and to what age? if you are doing clinics, you're going to be feeding pretty much the whole time. don't worry about it adversely affecting your skiing though hah thats not going to happen.

I've been playing tennis since I was 2 1/2 and in no way, shape or form will it help your skiing at all. Seeing that you're gonna be making bank from coaching, might be a smarter decision than inlining all summer.

I've played tennis for over 20 years, competitively and non-competitively. I do not have one "mega-arm" and it does not affect skiing AT ALL. If you honestly think that, I don't even know what to tell you. Just don't pretend you're Roddick and try to bomb in 150mph flat serves when you don't possess the technique or strength to do so, and you probably won't injure yourself.

Oh my god I picked up 3 of the head youtek prestige mid's..

I swear to god they're the best racket I've ever played with. SO FUCKING SOLID.

And OP, I highly fucking doubt you "snap 12 oz rackets". IF that happened once chances are your racket was factory cracked or your constant abuse and poor care was detrimental to the point where it ceased to live and broke.

Regardless, tennis will in no way affect your skiing ability, positive or negative.

Actually, it would probably help it positively, seeing that such a large percentage of the sport is leg and core strength. If you contest that statement you should not be coaching.

Yes, tennis will significantly hurt your ability to ski.  It's complicated, but it's highly recommended by experts that no one should attempt to partake in both activities during one lifespan.  It fucks with your body's equilibrium.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, just want you to stay safe.

someone please move this crap to the poops pokemon and gay sports forum it aint got shit to do with skiing
When you walk out the door in the morning, what matters most is not what type of skiing you do but whether that skiing is any good. On a waist-deep day, dropping into tight chutes or open bowls, down a sweet line throught the trees where pockets of wind-blown snow create so many natural lips and launching pads... So lets let the dubious bickering within our own sport die with it. The answer is already out there, along with the energy, the freedom, and the truth: What "saved skiing" is SKIING. - Tom Bie

yeah i was given them and ended up liking them. I hate the new shock absorber handle thing though. Prefer the old ones much more. if i had my way it would be the orange prince o3 tours from a while back but every time i start to like a racquet they discontinue them and alas mine are broken haha.

psh

I used to be on Babolat's junior team, only perk was a shit ton of pro hurricane. The rackets, I broke all of them, 2 of natural causes. other two were frustration. at the racket, obviously.

I did like the ORIGINAL babolat pure storm, that one was DANK.

haha now I'm thinking about all of my old rackets...

Wilson Hammer H5, 2, still have 1. 105in head.

Some babolat control racket, never saw any of them anywhere else, 2 of em, broke both

Babolat Pure Storm, 3, 2 broken

Babolat Pure Drive, 4, 4 broken

Wilson K Tour, 3, grip broke on 2 (happens on most of my rackets, I hold it too damn low on my backhands)

Prince Rebel Team, 4, 2 broken

Head Youtek Prestige, 2, still alive

It really wont effect your weight distribution or anything at all. I've been playing tennis for 10 years and will probably be playing d3 next year. Also if your using anything above a 12 oz tennis racket its probably from the 1950's as in they don't really make those anymore. So I wouldn't worry about it.

its not necessarily the weight of the racquet. If you get to a higher level then the constant swinging of an object so fast puts serious wear on some of your muscles. also, the swings arent always natural to your body; say if you're sprinting for the ball and you barely make it, no one has time to do a reg forehand correctly. to OP, nah it wont interfere with your skiing that much. unless you get hurt, you should be fine.
name a single tennis player who is jacked. you cant. rafa is the closest one, and his upper body is a twig.

anyways, are you going to be competing in dew tour next year?

my thoughts exactly aside from the fact that OP probably rides the bench for JV
ya....   but on a serious note which pure drive does nadal use. has he switched rackets over the years?

closest thing would be rafa, roddick (in his younger days, have you seen that guy's calves?), or delpo now (del potro if you're googling it). But that dude's just a horse.

Upper body strength doesn't mean much at all...

I'm a damn twig but I can guarantee I can smack the living shit out of the ball when necessary and no one is getting it back, it's all in the core, legs, and proper motion.

psh I used to be on Babolat's junior team, only perk was a shit ton of pro hurricane. The rackets, I broke all of them, 2 of natural causes. other two were frustration. at the racket, obviously. I did like the ORIGINAL babolat pure storm, that one was DANK. haha now I'm thinking about all of my old rackets... Wilson Hammer H5, 2, still have 1. 105in head. Some babolat control racket, never saw any of them anywhere else, 2 of em, broke both Babolat Pure Storm, 3, 2 broken Babolat Pure Drive, 4, 4 broken Wilson K Tour, 3, grip broke on 2 (happens on most of my rackets, I hold it too damn low on my backhands) Prince Rebel Team, 4, 2 broken Head Youtek Prestige, 2, still alive Tennis does nothing for skiing except makes your legs and core stronger
how the hell have you broken so many rackets. I play 7 on my shit schools varsity team and have broken 1 racket only because i was pissed at this freshman and slammed it on the ground. In like 10 years of play.
But seriously my high schools tennis team sucks i would be like 10 jv anywhere else

there is going to be absolutely no effect i play hockey and lacrosse all summer long, and i lift all summer long as well. it hasn't effected my skiing at all. if anything, a strengthened core from the swinging motion will help you whip spins around faster.
hit da gym to spin to win!
I think my favorite sport in the Olympics is the one in which you make your way through the snow, you stop, you shoot a gun, and then you continue on. In most of the world, it is known as the biathlon, except in New York City, where it is known as winter. ~Michael Ventre, L.A. Daily News

The answer lies in your response.

I've been playing since I was 2. Competing nationally since I was 12. I had a basic level sponsorship by Babolat. It's a whole different world when you're playing at the top junior level. High school tennis is a fucking joke.

I'm not trying to sound all high and mighty I'm trying to give you a good response haha

haha that's the one national I never made it to.

I played clays in carolina and alabama, hards at the US open facility, and a couple in maryland and ohio, but never at the zoo

I mean, I'm sure I could've gotten there if I really tried but I got hurt in the 14's and then kinda lost motivation in the 16's and didn't really get it back til last year. Clawed my way back up to 20 in Middlestates, not as high as I used to be though.

You play usta at all?

i think that tennis players are in the best shape of any professional athlete...BUT they are fucking skinny. thats all i was commenting on, was that you will not build muscle playing tennis.
