ESPN, in terms of their coverage of freeskiing is totally irrelevant. There really isn't any value whatsoever in their take on the sport. They see freeskiing and they see a demographic, they see young consumers, they see a revenue stream. Now I know that NS isn't a non-profit or anything, but I have no doubt that you see freeskiing and freeskiers and you see kin.
The humor is a big part of NS's identity, but it's also the premiere place for Joe Schmoes to rub elbows with pros. And, it's a place to rhyme apparently. There's much more to NS than either 12 year olds, or discussions about fashion, and anyone who has spent even a bit of time here knows that. I found out about NS because of edits. I watched edits almost daily for 2 years before I even realized or gave a shit that there was a forum. I don't think I'm alone in that.
Nothing else to be said, Bishop. You know what NS is and means to freeskiing, and more than that, so do we.

Well Mr. Bishop, the current trends in freeskiing currently on the extreme end of the spectrum are actually comical. I mean no hate and I am sooo sure a karma rape will ensue but you have to admit that some of these folks look and talk a bit ridiculous. The folks who wear jackets to their ankles, and intentional sag on the pants to the back of their knee are the brunt of many a joke these days. To us we know that this look or acting like a gangsta on your $1000 ski setup in no way represents all newschoolers but it is however, the most glaring representation of newschoolers as a whole. With that said, I'm a firm believer in freedom of expression and it's great that those folks have a place to come socialize with minimal hate. Again. No hate and a persons style is a persons style. Change that for no one. Just know that the more excessive the extremes in the newschoolers style spectrum become, the easier the target for ridicule.

The funny part is that we've done such a good job of being a comunity that the outside world doesn't understand what goes on here. They see a blip of NS and just get freaked out and leave.

www.newschoolers.tv for instance. I mean its a pretty cool video platform, and there is an extremely vibrant video community here. FAR more than anywhere else in skiing.

I've always come to NS for the latest news on contests, skiers, etc. But in my opinion, you guys have stepped it up tenfold when it comes to the articles/blogs/movies, etc.

Yeah that is totally the thing. Its funny, the forums now actually only make up about 45% of the total traffic to the site. People all over look at the content that both us and you guys produce every day.
I have to step out of this thread and the ESPN site... I'm too angry and I'm going to get myself in trouble.

I think you need to better represent the entire spectrum of newschoolers perhaps. Whenever I talk to any freeskiing non-NS members they always say, "that site is for young park rats.". Most of us know better and it actually shows the ignorance of alot of freeskiers. "newschool" as a whole encompasses much more than the park. You put a guy on pow skis and have him drop a cliff 180 and then continue to carve switch back in the year 2000 and that's super "newschool". Perhaps NS can reach out to the big mountain types a little better? I love this site and it's my fav ski site for sure so don't take that the wrong way. I just think its the representation of the site that maybe gets its reputation as snarky 12yr olds.

we are skiers, we are legion, we are newschoolers. expect us.
There is a sizeable, somewhat jaded contingent in the industry who see this website as a sort of necessary but embarassing evil, who will dismiss it and disavow ever spending any time on here. The knee-jerk reference to 12 year olds criticizing a trick as a characterization of the site is basically dead-on-point in summing up the attitude of that contingent of the industry. That a lot of people don't like NS and take this perspective is neither surprising nor is it somehow a revelation. It's equally unsurprising that some of these people work for ESPN, because they work for ski companies, resorts, media concerns, etc etc etc. Everywhere. So when I read something like this, or hear a comment along these lines at some freeskiing-related-event (comp, premiere, whatever) it's not the first time I've read or heard it over the past 10 or so years. It won't be the last.
Realistically, the news coverage on NS is as good or better than anywhere else online. No one else has a dedicated video section - which granted is still developing, but still, no one else is developing one so far as I'm aware. There is no larger or more active or more diverse forum in terms of participant background and what they get out of skiing. In other words, this website can't be categorized for the purpose of a specific award. NS does everything - whether it does everything well is a point of contention, I'm sure, but it does everything. So it really doesn't matter if it's "best humour site" or "best news site" or "best ____", it's still going to be inaccurate.

Maybe freeskiing needs to just write espn off as irrelevant....in a public way. Shoulda been(sorta was) done after that whole staged Shaun White perfect score thing. How cheesy was that really? The x games have done alot for action sports but after this year it's just gotten silly. So screw them. They knew exactly what they were doing when they wrote that article. They were attempting to belittle the community and the community should reciprocate.
Haha, although generally when I'm looking for a laugh I know I'll find one here, either something like the women logic thread in nsg or funny ski gabber threads. But obviously theres much more here then just funny stuff people post.

that's bullshit. NS is not only the biggest (which in this case size matters a ton when everyone on the industry has an account) but it also is definitely the quickest with information regarding anything. NS isn't first for me, it's the only site i go to... ever
