Environment Canada, along with many others have indicated that there will be another La Nina in 2012-2013. For places such as the PNW (pacific north west), especially whistler, this is a great thing. La Nina makes for unseasonably cool and wet weather in the PNW. Unfortunately, for the east coast, the story is not the same. The east coast in both the USA and Canada, is currently set for an unseasonably short, dry, and warm winter. The ski season out here is already out to a slow start, and unfortunetly, that is set to continue.

I guess this means all of the east coast newschoolers need to plan a trip out west this year...

do you mean 2011-2012?

because there is no way they can predict next years winter now.

Yes i do mean 2011-2012 . i was confused because the article discussed this years weather prediction 2011-2012, and some insight into what that might mean for the winter 2012-2013. Actually they can predict next winter a little bit, because 2 years of la nina usually is followed by a strong el nino.

again, sorry for the mistake and thank you for brining it to my attention

hmmm that wasn't quite the right description of La Nina for North America.

Yes. There is a return of La Nina for the 2011-2012 winter season. This La Nina will not be as strong as last years, but will still be a good one.

For the Pacific Northwest (Northern Cali to British Columbia), this means that there will be higher than average snowfall along with cooler temperatures. Higher than average snowfall takes place because the jet stream shfits north due to an area of high pressure in the Pacific - this movement of the jet stream causes storms to make landfall right in the PNW.

For the east coast, saying an "unseasonably short, dry, and warm winter" is quite inaccurate. In fact, La Nina does not deviate temperatures in the Northeast from the average, nor is there a strong trend concerning preciptation totals. This year, the NOAA even predicts that precipitation will be slightly higher than normal in some areas.

Check out the NOAA winter outlook:
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2011/20111020_winteroutlook.html

Hope this clears some things up.

Pray for snow on the east coast!

Really?

I ask because the way it's ALWAYS worked is that La Nina follows and El Nino, now the La Nina that has been in place since the beginning of last winter (the one that is WEAKENING right now and will DISSIPATE by February) will eventually give way to an El Nino. So the fact that Environment Canada is forecasting a La Nina for next winter is VERY odd.

For example:
http://www.globalweathercycles.com/elninoforecastgwo.html

No mention of a La Nina next winter, but does say prepare for a strong El Nino.

You might want to do a little more reading about what a La Nina is, because it does NOT guarantee more powder days. General storminess is usually present in the northwest during a La Nina. Also, keep in mind that a La Nina like the one is that currently happening is VERY unusual and is in fact one of the strongest ever recorded.
