History of the Twin Tip

Alright guys.
I'm doing a compare/contrast conceptual based presentation focusing on the evolution of the twin-tip and freestyle skiing in comparison to that of traditional alpine skiing (generalities).
I plan on covering points such as:
1) Main difference in gear (outwear, skis, bindings)
2) The "newschool" ski/mountain culture in general
3) The evolution of the twin-tip.
4) Styles of skiing (maybe touch base on basic "trickology")

I know this is a huge topic with endless subcategories, however I plan on only brushing the tip of the iceberg for education purposes of general audience.
It has to be simple enough for someone to have no prior knowledge of the sport to be able to catch on to my main points. This will help reduce the amount of information I need to provide.
My main point of focus will be freestyle park skiing as opposed to traditional alpine skiing.
I might touch base on big mountain/freeride as well depending upon the flow.

Right now I'm really having trouble finding some solid academic sources to help shape my presentation.
If anyone has anything, and I mean anything, saved in their favs that could constitute for an academic source, feel free to throw it my way.

As always, any help is some fatty +K.

I'm back tracking. Never took my COM225 until now. With the ski season so close, it's all that's on my mind so I figured why not talk about it and get a grade ha!

i dont have it saved, but im sure a quick google search will pull up the 10th anniversary of the 1080, there was tons and tons of info on that and how the twin ever came about. hope that helps a little

2000-11: separate apparel, bright colors, switch, dubs, rails, no poles/poles controversy, usage of the word "bro," pants past boot dragging, tall tees, gypsies, music: wu tang, aesop, method man, pretty lights

That's essentially how I plan to incorporate many of the elements into my presentation.
Just mirroring current alpine skiing to park skiing.

However I also plan to discuss the 1080 and how it was responsible in starting the park skiing revolution.
I'm trying to find a solid source about the 1080 and how early park skiers would heat the tails up and bend them.

I'm fairly certain how to shape the report, but I'm required at least 3 acdemic sources and that's where I'm having problems. Lots of blogs and newschool postings, but not many solid sources.

first twin tip was the Olin Mark IV Comp. My dad has a pair with the old look pivots on them. I look them out for a couple runs last season. Ski pretty good for a 200 something cm straight ski

You get an A+ for this, although the longest Olin made the comp IV was 190. Most people skied it in about a 185. It was strictly a freestyle ski. This was in the early to mid 70's.

The first modern twin tip was the Salomon 1080. This should help you out:

Not sure that I buy into the K2 Poacher being the first mass produced twin tip unless K2 mass produced them, stuck them in storage and forgot about them.

I skied with Scott Kauf in Warren Miller's "Fifty" and Scott skied on 1080's. That wasn't the first time that I saw a pair of 1080's. We filmed "Fifty" in 1998, so Poachers would have to have been produced and sold prior to 1998. If they were around prior to 1998 I think I would have seen a pair, because friends of mine tested most if not all of K2's products. Just because someone posted it up on Wikipedia doesn't mean that it's fact. No hate intended, but that could have been posted by K2's PR department, for a publicity ploy.

As a huge k2 fan, I would love to argue that the poacher came first. And it just may have. BUT, when you look back at the impact that the 1080 had on our sport. It has to be seen as the biggest, most important step into what has become modern park/freeride skiing. If you look back at movies like PBP's 13 and Matchstick's Sick Sence, none of the skiers were on the k2 poacher. They were all on the yellow 1080. K2's first real answer to the 1080 was the original Enemy.

Depending on the level of the project (middle school vs high school vs college) and the citation format you use, you can use videos from the internet.

Not trying to promote Easybib, I just owe my high school grades to it :P

Also, I think you should be sure to check out some of the influential skiing films. I haven't seen many but what immediately comes to mind is Warren Miller's stuff from the past 10 years, because they seem very serious and closer to factual than most other film studios.

Post up a photo of those. The skis definitely weren't light by today's standards but the bindings back then weighed a ton. Spademan bindings were the lightest setup but they were bizarre. They had plates that had to be mounted on the bottom of your boots.

My guess is that your dad's skis either had Salomon 555's or 444's,

First year ever if High North Ski Camp in the summer of 1998 JP, JF, VInnie and crew had the 1080 protos. They received the first one ever that winter 1998 at the US OPEN, where JP held it up at the awards ceremony. That 1080 was actually an X-Scream with a raised tail. By summer time they figured it out more with it's own unique shape.

The 1080 ski was first sold to the public that next fall (Fall of 1998).

K2 Poacher was developed and sold well before the 1080. Poacher was shown at SIA in 1997 and first sold in the fall of 1997. It had the 'retro' graphics just like the El Camino. Year two it was black and red and then it became the Pipeline. All white surfboard looking ski.

And K2 doesn't have a PR department:)

I'll take your word for it, but it's strange that I never saw a pair of them in 97. Friends of mine were sponsored by K2 and usually got to ride all the prototypes. I have known Mike Porter since I was in high school, and he usually tested out all of K2's new skis including one that they built in cooperation with some NASA guys. It was supposed to get stiffer the more pressure you put on it. I also skied with the CEO of K2 in like 96. He was a very chill guy, and could rip. Brain cramp is preventing me from remembering what his name was. A bunch of my friends were mounting telli bindings on El Caminos around that time.

I own a pair of twintipped skis from the 1930's. My dad used them until the late 1950s when he finally bought Head 360s. I believe they were called "Goon" skis at the time.
I'll post a picture of them.

First popular twintip was the Olin Mk IV. Those bright orange ugly skis they had for years. They sold a bajillion and you'll still see them sometimes. They were a super popular bump ski/beginner intermediate ski in the 1970s

I went to a ski museum in norway that was pretty cool. Apparently it was closed and I broke in and night security made me leave around 3/4 of my way through.
