everyone has a few facebook "friends" who clain themselves photographers. Their mom bought them a t2i or an other popular reflex on special at best buy and now they shoot away on auto and call themselves photographers.

Anyways we all know you have some of those friends: example John smith photographer. Post some examples of their shitty pictures.

i highly suggest you read the thread, because you are still missing the point. but here it is in a nutshell: there is nothing wrong with these people learning photography. taking bad shots is a part of that. but when they start their own 'photography business' before they've even taken the time to learn the craft, well, that's fucking stupid. in addition, it hurts professionals because it devalues the work. i'd say it's ok to make fun of them for it. and if you think it's wrong to do that then why did you post a picture in the first place? you could have spent that time suggesting to the photog ways to improve. but i guess that's not really how you think. i didn't even mean to come off like i was attacking your post in the first place, i was just trying to keep this thread on track.
ok sorry haha i understand what you're saying. the only reason i posted the picture is because i personally think its uncreative and unoriginal. it is nice to look at but the only reason someone took the picture is because they got the idea from another picture. and the reason i posted it was because i know a lot of people on facebook who call themselves photographers and think that there 2 years of practice makes them a professional so they make a fan page for "John Smith Photography" and then put up a picture like this. and I'm not getting angry or anything honestly i don't really care, i just misunderstood the thread. and if you are angry at my exsistence in this thread, well then i shall leave. peace.

Implying that being in a college level class means anything. I'm in college, therefore I am good at everything? Not how it works.
Nooo I mean like, My photo teacher requested I skip photo 2 and 3 to take a college level photo class. btw I'm a junior in HS, and the rest of the class is seniors.

I'm not saying i'm like fucking amazing or anything, but definitely above average.

get what i'm sayin? because I'm really not trying to sound cocky.

It sounds to me like photography is at the point the music industry was a few years ago. there is no longer a barrier of entry, so everybody is a photographer, just like suddenly everybody was publishing music without major label support. this makes the foundation of the industry super cluttered and hard to sift through all the shit(have you been on a music blog lately?), but people still make it. there is still a ladder to climb for those talented enough to do so, it just takes that much more work to get up out of the crowd and onto that first rung.
No, not well said. You quite clearly have not had a good solid look at the history of the music industry. The only thing that's changed in this respect since recorded music is the method of recording/distributing and the Internet. There was never ever a point where all of a sudden it became cool to make music so everyone did it. It's always been a constant. The only reason why you think it's like that is because none of the shit that people recorded 50 years ago is still around and today it's much easier to access the shit that's made. No one cared about it back then so it's gone. The exact same thing with photography. There is no boom of wannabe photographers. It's just that you notice it now because you're in the present; with them. You would never hear tale of them from before because nobody gave a shit about them and their work didn't stick around. I don't understand how this is so difficult to grasp. Maybe I don't know how to write it out properly, or maybe everyone wants there to be something to work against.

Come on thats bullshit. Where are you getting the info you base yourself on? As someone who works camera sales, i can confirm you that cameras are on the rise. Juste this year, there is a 10% rise in sales. Cameras are half the price of what they used to be. Of course theres more new fauxtographers. Yes a lot of it is due to them being more visible, but there is a huge uprise in camera owners. And in music, now it is very doable to have a respectable in house studio. There are now many more people are producing and promoting their shit because they dont have to pay for studio time. Perfect example of undercutting.

agreed on everything except your last sentence. It's not undercutting, I'd say it's leveling the playing field. granted, the playing field now is lower, but, everybody has a fair chance at success. It's a free market, and if someone wants to pay Terry Richardson prices and get Terry Richardson work, they can do so, or they can go to their neighborhood shittogropher they found on facebook, pay em with 10 bucks and a handjob and get what they pay for.

But you see... The world doesnt work as simplistically as your examples. In reality you have a contract which you charge 1000 dollars. An other guy shows up and chages just a bit lower, say, 800. You are charging already low for the quality of your work but he charges way to much for the quality of his product but his price is lower so he gets the gig. And no its not just as easy as skill dictating price the competition dictates the price a whole lot when i make prices. So if the competition is charging stupid cheap you have to compete or lose clients that were in your range

Oh my god.

Dude....that's the fucking point! The whole point is that we have things like the internet now. Those things make it easier for people to produce music and distribute it. Same goes for photography. Anybody can buy a nice digital camera, get photoshop, and distribute their work now.

And I don't know how you don't think there's not a boom of wannabe photographers and filmmakers. You clearly have not witnessed the T2i and GoPro obsession that is taking over ski resorts worldwide. The fact is, people can get really, really nice cameras for so cheap for the first time ever, and it's catching on quick.

You can keep arguing if you would like, but the fact is you're flat out wrong.

Also, you must have missed the MASSIVE mashup trend a couple years ago when every person was downloading Audacity to make their own mashups. Many of those people didn't play music before, and have since stopped. Without the accessibility to music software, I doubt they would have ever dabbled in music production.

This may be a bit unrelated but fuck instagram. I'm so sick of people making photography albums with instagram pictures on facebook. Great, You found out how to over-edit photos on your phone. No need to put them on facebook.

i just think that people schould read up on what their gear schould be, and how to use it. Just knowing how to under expose something, or how to take proper used of depth of field, or what lenses you schould use could make all the difference. There are so many great books on photography out there, if you just read one it would improve your pictures by a million times.

Shit i don't even have an SLR, but just reading a book showed me how to use my ISO settings, and how to take pics off auto. So much better. I think the worst thing that could ever happen is that modern DSLR have auto settings on them. They schould be LESS user friendly.

Its a college town and being a larger town for montana theres a lot of different people
I miss the good old days of 2009. Back when people didnt call someone a hipster just because they had tight jeans on and a crew neck sweater from the eighties. Back when real hipsters could still be spotted drinking beer in an attempt to get over the previous cocaine induced night. When people didnt mix boat shoes with jeans from abercrombie and every trixie hoe didnt own a pair of clear lensed glasses. O how I miss the good old days.

The reason why you're having so much trouble understanding it is that you're treating photography like any other industry. The problem is that it is an art, and that completely changes things.

If a photographer is in it for the art, then why are they worried if they can earn $100 or $2000 for a photo?

The minute a photographer start setting a price and selling his photos, they become a product. His art has now become a business. If his competition is selling their product to a consumer at a lower price, and that consumer is happy with said product, then he is s.o.l.

Its down to the photographer to find a different consumer. If they want the original consumer back, they need to reduce their price, or improve their product to a point that the consumer is willing to purchase their photos over the $100 photographer.

...

first of all, it should be pretty obvious why a photographer is worried about money. it's their JOB. the point of a job is to make money so you can support yourself. just because you make art doesn't mean you want to live in a cardboard box. unfortunately it sometimes happens, but that's usually not the goal the artist has in mind.

and the rest of your post is exactly why i said that the fact that it is an art changes everything. i meant that the photographers are faced with a choice: try to preserve the integrity of the art and continue producing high quality photographs for high prices, despite the fact that he/she will get fewer clients, or charge much lower prices and put no effort into the photography whatsoever. this ensures jobs, but the photographer has lost artistic dignity, which is important to many artists.

As a side note, you have to realize that the 'competition' you are talking about usually ISN'T making a living off of photography. You can't support yourself by doing $200 weddings. These are average people with regular jobs who just happen to do 'photography' (aka turning the camera to auto and pressing the shutter button). They have a separate source of income, so they don't care about making money. But to professionals (or legit amateurs), the money could very well be something they rely upon. So their livelihood is being ruined by amateurs who don't realize how much they're hurting the market.

To WillStart, I agree, it sucks for the photographer who has trained and invested alot of money into his craft.

Unfortunately though, even though he is producing art, he is selling it. And for that reason he becomes a business man. (I would argue that to be a true artist, if he is happy with a photo, it wouldn't matter if it sells for $1 or $10,000 or just hangs on a wall for others to enjoy.)

It's a terrible shame, but if photography and other artforms are a way of making money, it can't be exempt from other forces in the market.

Anyway, no point in arguing a fact. Lets get back to the point of the thread!

It's not a fact... because we are talking about a service here. Photographers generally aren't selling a photo for a few $$ they are selling a service. Most positions in the service industry require licenses and so forth so you know you are getting a certain level of expertise. There is a reason that Most massages cost more than $50 an hour. There is a reason why you pay $50 an hour for someone to work on your car. There Is a reason that remodeling companies are required to be licensed. There are also unions and so forth. But in the creative industry, there is no real standard. So when people claim "professional" at a lower price and there are say, 10 people claiming this lower price. Client expects lower price to be more accurate than the actual professionals price even without looking at any portfolios.

Or even if they have 15 really wonderful candid photos. Does that mean they know how to pose a wedding? If people are calling themselves professionals, you should be able to trust that to a degree. It's not like the person hiring the photographer knows to ask, so, if it happens to be raining, do you own the proper lighting equipment for our photos to still turn out beautifully, maybe with some dramatic clouds in the background? A real professional would be prepared for that regardless. Suzy who owns 2 lenses and offers to do them wont have these things and people will be unsatisfied. They will fight for their money back. The moment may be done and lost... all because Suzy thought claiming pro and charging low was ok. Meanwhile Will didn't get a client cause he charged more... but his pictures would have been awesome. Too little too late.
