Hey Newschoolers. How's your day going? Mine's fantastic. Okay, enough small talk.

Our very dear friend Mr. Chris Macmahoon has been taking on greater and greater responsibilities for Newschoolers. So, instead of bugging Chris with your site moderation questions, you can now e-mail us instead, which I'm sure will come as no small relief to him. To that purpose we have set up a gmail account at nsmods@gmail.com, which is where you should direct any inquiries. I will do my best to answer them. But first, just PM - usually one of the mods will answer your questions if they know the answer. Or, post in this thread.

Speaking of this thread, on to the real point. Since I'm making a sticky, I might as well make it have a topic. So the topic is this: suggest how moderation could be better. Usually, my response to such suggestions is "piss off, we'll do what we want", but in this case, I am actually asking. It seems to me that half the people want this to be 4chan (I'm not down) and the other half want everyone who trolls, hates or posts something nonsensical to be permanently erased from the fabric of the universe (I'm not okay with that either). But either way, or some way in between, post it up, how would you do things differently. This thread will be in site discussion stickied as the Transparent Moderation Discussion Thread, where you can ask questions about why X was done or why Y was done and you may - or may not - get an answer. No promises, but we'll try.

Here's how I look at it. I was going to post this in a certain recent thread in site discussion talking about moderation, but here works just as well. I find NS has a really ... unique... attitude towards moderation. People take this stuff personally. Every other forum I am on there is a certain respect for the fact that people take the time out of their day to make the site better and clean out the trash - and trust me there is a metric fuckin' ton of trash that you guys don't even see. If your thread was deleted, suck it up, it doesn't hurt you, no one stole your crayons or tripped you on the playground, so get past it. There are pretty solid odds it wasn't done as some "screw you", but because someone looked at it and thought "this forum would be better if that post wasn't there". Everyone has had posts deleted, myself included. There are a bunch of guidelines posted in site discussion that are loosely called "rules", but what it comes down to is, we have a bunch of people whose judgment we trust to make the site better and if they think something should be deleted then they're going to delete it. There's no handbook.

Here's an analogy, because every time a moderation discussion comes up it seems like we need to offer clever new ways of saying "just don't be an asshole". Think of Newschoolers like a pub. I know a lot of you are probably too young to spend a lot of time in pubs but you know the basic idea. There are a bunch of tables of people chillin, drinking, eating delicious pub food. Some are quietly talking about politics, some are laughing at each other and generally having a good time, some are being drunken (but harmless) idiots, another table is arguing intensely about whether the olympics are a positive or negative force. On the whole, everything's pretty pleasant. Then someone walks into the bar and starts being an asshole. Dude is yelling and shouting (who knows why), wandering around to tables trying to sell random people his screenprinted t-shirts and hanging up naked pictures all over the walls. The bar staff tells him to chill the fuck out, and he responds by screaming at them and making rude comments about their sexual orientation (which, by the way, offends the gay dude who's quietly enjoying a beer and watching Setanta at the bar). What do you expect is going to happen in this situation?

There is a point to this by the way - TWA and Elgato are doing such a kickass job we've decided why stop there? We want more new mods. The catch is we need some from different time zones, so we're looking for a couple of European mods, or Aussies, or Kiwis, or if you're in Japan, we are a cultural mosaic here at NS as you can see by the rainbow colours on the online list. If anyone has any good ideas about Member XYZ from Peru who'd totally be a great mod, please let me know. Or post about it below. Or both. Or neither. No, wait, not neither. Definitely do one of those things.

the problem is that "memes" are developing a stigma on NS, and people are just extending the definition of a meme to any and all pictures with any type/captions on them whatsoever, when in fact a meme can be a picture/song/video/link that has gained widespread popularity across the internet, usually for a fairly stupid reason. i.e. "not a single fuck was given that day" "haters gonna hate" "moar" etc etc etc

it's as though posting pictures at all that have the intention of being funny is becoming something that is looked down upon. Here's a news flash, NSG is the most widely trafficked area of the site because it's entertaining and funny and at times quite mindless. It's enjoyable to browse because you really never know what you're going to get.

As Vinnie said, if it's a serious thread and somebody is interrupting a good discussion with irrelevant pictures, then by all means get rid of it. But if not, let people have some fun. Taking the fun out of NSG will kill a lot of site traffic I guarantee you that.

I personally do not mind the memes as long as it's not like... someone posts a thread, 5 people comment, then every 2nd post is a meme totally unrelated to the topic just because someone thought it was funny and absolutely had to post it somewhere.

This seems like a good time for a meme.

And oh yeah I remember that thread. Pretty sure they made a Jiberish edit shortly thereafter stretching out tall tees. That was an example about what's not good about TGR (like the Retallack thread recently with some dude complaining about too much "flippy spinny bullshit"). But that in itself illustrates one of the ways NS is a pretty different place and why it wouldn't work there.

I still am not seeing why someone should be banned for what they've posted on another website or why the NS rules should extend beyond NS. To make it clearer, let the decree ring forth from this time and this place: any NS member who wants to go on 4chan and post atrocious garbage there is free to do so.

And yeah, karma is pretty wonky alright, it's been changed a bunch of times but still doesn't really work.

What is your problem man, TGR and NS are two different websites, run in two different ways, if you don't like how NS does it then go back to TGR, you got a nice 4K posts there, and a nice 2005 sign up date, then why come here? Just to rant on us man, cause that's just a great use of time. We all ski here so why must we divided by the clothes we were or the type of skiing we do. Stop coming here just to Say shit to J.D and about the Rest of the community. Frankly, I think J.D and the rest of the mods do quite a good job moderating this site, due to the age demographic here, we aren't a bunch of old ski bums that stumbled into an internet forum we are a bunch of "younger" skiers that are in a sport that is gaining momentum.

This is what I find odd, the superiority complex of some people based on what Vbulletin message board they signed up for, as if that's something to be proud of. Thankfully it has gotten much better here over the years to the point where anyone who trash talks TGR or Epicski etc. is generally shouted down pretty quick - and rightly so. Nothing but respect for the mags.

I never called for anyones banning hell for all i know capricornious got a pants down spanking and promised to try and repesent your community in a bit more mature manner. I was tryng to point out some hyporcitsies and discuss the slippery slope that is moderation and having a bunch of different moderators presents.

So gay and fag are no goes looks like "light in the loafers soy" passes the litmus test, I'm gonna guess assmunchin butt pirate probably gonna get deleted and or a pm from a green name.

I don't have time to go see what kind of stuff I've posted but kind of remember at least a few posts being slightly helpful and I'm pretty certain topics or skills like ski techin or beacon skills, snow safety turnearnin or skibumming, I know as much as anyone here and have contributed my convaluted form of insight.

I don't hate parkskiiing, the east coast, thug lifestyle, overpriced xxxl tall t's and other jiberish crap, or your need to take pictures and get acceptence from your peers on your steeze, but it amuses me and if you can't tell the difference between hate and good humored ribbing, it's natures way of telling you you have thin skin and are taking the webz way to cereal. Hell I dig them dubsatch groms, Janky bros and the direction their going and I may even throw a little color in my primarily earthtone kit and even try and throw a 360 or helicopter as us old school bums used to call em next season. Shit Dawgs if ya peep my latest edit I'm gonna land that one ski frontfilp at the end and take er brown eye first to the road next season, then post about it on my blog.

Sweet relevent meme though try a few puffs of the cron before reading my posts an it may help a bit may not though. Skierx somehow managed to get where I was going and it wasn't a mindless rant about how you run the good ship ns and took the time to formulate the answer I was looking for.

Now back to the topic of moderation if anyone can take the time to tell me how being able to pull your head out of your ass and realize your post or thread sucks and have the power to delete or edit it yourself would make this skiing community worse please expand upon those thoughts.

This is the only part of your post I understood. Apparently "a puff of the cron" is needed to decode this secret language.

Anyway, the "delete your own post" question was in fact asked and answered on page 1 of this thread I believe. The general consensus on here has always been that if you make a thread, and end up regretting it, tough; by that time people have started commenting and it's sort of got a life of its own. Allowing people to delete those kinds of threads would probably result in some pretty decent threads being deleted. So that is the balance that is struck and we decided to err on the side of letting things stay. That being said I get a couple of PM's per day from someone asking me to delete their thread, and I usually do it if there's a good reason.

I myself would like to see the ability to delete one's own threads in B/S/T, so that you can get rid of your thread when the stuff you posted has sold or if you decide to keep it. However, again, going back to Ash's sphere of influence comment, I do not have the technical expertise to program such a function into the site. And if you're looking for evidence that there is a backlog of stuff that needs fixing and the boys don't have time to get around to new add-ons right now, please note that I currently do not have a functional icon.

yo skifishbum, I see what you're saying, and I agree with you pretty much 100%. You have the attitude of a dude on TGR. A ski bum. ski bums ski, they don't fuck around on the internet with silly stuff. or if they do look around on the internet, they go find information on legitimate sites and don't ask a group of 14-25 year olds. or they just don't care about that and go skiing. and they don't pussyfoot around what they want to say, or try to kill you with politeness.

nevertheless, not all of us are ski bums. I was, got sick of the lifestyle, and now I have rejoined the system. Sadface. Not.

but seriously, there are are a couple people on here who are just dicks all the time, I feel like those people are necessary on this community. sometimes fanboys need to be kept in check...or when they grow up and hold onto the idolization of pros, trendwhore mentality, then we should be able to make fun of them...

basically I feel like we should be able to state our opinion on whatever subject happens to be on topic. obviously overly stupid posts should be deleted for the poster's sake, but if someone makes a thought out post just to get a rise out of someone, then I don't feel like that should be deleted. Most of the time it's for a purpose other than just getting one's emotional rocks off.

If we feel the need to call out an NS mod, those threads should be allowed. If we feel the need to start a shitshow, NS already is one so why bother trying to fix it unless there are pornographic images, overtly racist posts, or other clear violations of basic public decency?

Btw, I don't consider riots (mass mentality, groupmind) a bad thing, so maybe I'm coming from a biased standpoint of a naive young man who wants the closest thing toward an unregulated forum on freestyle skiing that I can get, haha.

This is my last post in this thread, from what I've seen most of the responses from mods here have been defenses of their actions while several members, if not the majority of the thread, are looking for a different attitude. Just my observations, if you didn't change jack shit I would still be a happy person.

I think the mods do a fine job here, I even think they could delete more shit threads and it'd be fine by me. Memes should be left as long as they are relevant or somewhat of an attempt at related humor. Stoned thread=stoned dog memes, picture or photoshop thread=moar and things like that ok fine it's funny. Ten unrelated courage wolf memes in a row=pointless. Shit threads have no place in here as far as I'm concerned, but maybe that's the over 20 something guy part of me talking. Hey, my shit thread wasn't just about shit. It was for science. Research at the best.

Another NS and I at the same time (He lives in Seattle) ate chinese food, corn and apple juice, and wondered what would happen. Together we waited. It wasn't meant to be funny, it was meant for research. I saved my lab write up at home, and I have since documented it in my research paper I am working on.

And it wasn't just a log in the toilet, it was also the food, and lots of research. I do have pictures of just logs I've taken, some measured over 18 inches long. They hurt. If interested, please PM me, you're right, they don't belong in a thread, but my research thread, that did belong. It was fucking research. And middle school humor? Middle school humor? I work in a middle school, and no one ever makes shit jokes. As for me, an adult, I have shit tattoed on my ass. It's funny. If you don't think it's funny, grow up. Shit is a funny word, and having shit on my ass is funny. If you don't think so, remove the stick from your ass, and smell it. If it smells like a vagina, please PM for help. If it smells like shit, then there you go. Shit.

As for meme's, if the post get automatically deleted by some mods, what gives J.D. the right to post one in this thread, even if it is relevant? That's not fair. There needs to be a rule on meme's. I personally find some really funny, and if they aren't funny, I wasted 2 seconds of my life looking at it. What else was I going to do with that 2 seconds? Watch porn or play a video game? There should be a strict rule on meme's. Either they are allowed or they aren't. I vote they are (assuming they obey rules, like, no porn, naughty words, etc)

That's my 2 cents, not my .02 cents. When I blow, I blow a .08, not an 8. I would be dead so many times.

I don't know about that dude's banning because I wasn't involved but as a general comment, we hear two things more often than anything else:

1. "I didn't post that, my brother / friend / dog got on my account and posted it, it's not my fault, unban me."

A: You are responsible for your own account. We have no way of telling whether you or your brother is doing the posting. This excuse will never be accepted.

2. "I didn't know that was a rule."

A: Most of the time we hear this it's someone playing dumb, despite the fact that what he did was obviously pushing it. We're not stupid. This just goes back to "don't be an asshole". If you find yourself thinking, "I wonder if I'll get banned for this" and post it anyway, you're being an asshole. We're basically operating on the assumption that you all have a modicum of common sense. This excuse is generally not going to work either.

In the interest of elaborating on "don't be an asshole", allow me to provide an example.

Earlier today we received an email from a member who had been banned. The reason for the ban was that he had gone into a thread wherein someone was talking about losing a family member - most of NS pretty much was giving the kid positive vibes. This individual felt it would be appropriate to tell the guy who had just lost his mom that no one should care about this dude's mom because they didn't know her personally (that's a paraphrase, his post was longer). He was banned for two weeks for that - in my view, he got off light.

He subsequently sent us an email today arguing that people die all the time, in fact one every .55 seconds, and so this was totally appropriate behaviour and his account should be immediately re-instated. My response:

Yes, you were banned by one of the other mods for two weeks. I had assumed you were banned permanently and was going to go in to shorten it to a month, but two weeks is definitely fair in my view.

Just think for a second. If a guy is sitting with some people telling them about some tragic loss of life, would you walk up to him and explain to him just why you didn't care? This falls under "don't be an asshole". It's really easy, if you don't care about someone's problems, to just not read or post in the thread.

Just for future reference, here are some arguments that rarely result in anyone changing their minds on a moderation decision:

a) the rule for which you were banned is stupid (usually "why can't I call people fags"),

b) it was okay for you to be an asshole in this circumstance for this, that or the other reason, or

c) Moderator X is a power-hungry asshole who clearly has a vendetta against me personally despite never having met me - we got one of these yesterday.

you can be rude, but you can't do it with typos or poor grammar, otherwise you just look like a dumb person that nobody wants around here anyways. you can post porn, just put it in a thread the mods won't look at. that's what i've learned.
if someone's dog/mom/lover dies, and they say "R.I.P. Fido, you'll never be forgotten," it's totally cool to just say "nah, he'll be forgotten." just don't write some big long post about why you don't care about the person's dog/mom/lover or any of their personal problems that they shouldn't be sharing with people they've never met anyways, and nobody will even notice.
don't go around the forums calling people "dumb fucks" or shit like that. just because you don't agree with someone doesn't mean they are dumb, or a fuck, and calling them such things just makes you look fucking dumb (better choice of words than "dumb fuck"). you'll never get banned for calling someone a dumb fuck (unless their Mom just died, then they have special privileges), but you are looking for trouble if you go around calling people swear words all the time like you've got Tourette Syndrome.
avoid political threads if they make you angry. avoid any thread that makes you angry, otherwise you're bound to end up spewing hatred and ignorant bullshit for no reason.
also, if you lost a bunch of karma for being an asshole, and you want it back, write a poem or other literary work about how skiing makes you feel and post it in SG.

you're so fucking lame its unbelievable. its obvious you dont really give any thought to what you say and what effect it will have, but do remember that your insensitive garbage opinions can have more impact than you think. i can also see that no ones really getting through to your little monkey brain, but i will just say that you're a giant dick and you should probably take a step back and thoroughly look at yourself as a person.

yeah i've sent more than a few messages to mods about stuff that should be deleted, and it's always resulted in a deletion and in some cases a ban. i'm far from being the best member on this site and i've definitely crossed the line a few times, but i have a pretty good idea of what shouldn't be here, and when i see stuff that crosses the line i try to help the mods out a little bit.

I've called you out on being a dick before and deleted posts you've made and I'm sure other mods have too but like I said, our goal here isn't to ensure that everything posted on NS is all sunshines and lollipops, as long as you stay within reason (and no making fun of the departed is not within reason) we're pretty tolerant compared to many websites.
