Hey Newschoolers. How's your day going? Mine's fantastic. Okay, enough small talk.

Our very dear friend Mr. Chris Macmahoon has been taking on greater and greater responsibilities for Newschoolers. So, instead of bugging Chris with your site moderation questions, you can now e-mail us instead, which I'm sure will come as no small relief to him. To that purpose we have set up a gmail account at nsmods@gmail.com, which is where you should direct any inquiries. I will do my best to answer them. But first, just PM - usually one of the mods will answer your questions if they know the answer. Or, post in this thread.

Speaking of this thread, on to the real point. Since I'm making a sticky, I might as well make it have a topic. So the topic is this: suggest how moderation could be better. Usually, my response to such suggestions is "piss off, we'll do what we want", but in this case, I am actually asking. It seems to me that half the people want this to be 4chan (I'm not down) and the other half want everyone who trolls, hates or posts something nonsensical to be permanently erased from the fabric of the universe (I'm not okay with that either). But either way, or some way in between, post it up, how would you do things differently. This thread will be in site discussion stickied as the Transparent Moderation Discussion Thread, where you can ask questions about why X was done or why Y was done and you may - or may not - get an answer. No promises, but we'll try.

Here's how I look at it. I was going to post this in a certain recent thread in site discussion talking about moderation, but here works just as well. I find NS has a really ... unique... attitude towards moderation. People take this stuff personally. Every other forum I am on there is a certain respect for the fact that people take the time out of their day to make the site better and clean out the trash - and trust me there is a metric fuckin' ton of trash that you guys don't even see. If your thread was deleted, suck it up, it doesn't hurt you, no one stole your crayons or tripped you on the playground, so get past it. There are pretty solid odds it wasn't done as some "screw you", but because someone looked at it and thought "this forum would be better if that post wasn't there". Everyone has had posts deleted, myself included. There are a bunch of guidelines posted in site discussion that are loosely called "rules", but what it comes down to is, we have a bunch of people whose judgment we trust to make the site better and if they think something should be deleted then they're going to delete it. There's no handbook.

Here's an analogy, because every time a moderation discussion comes up it seems like we need to offer clever new ways of saying "just don't be an asshole". Think of Newschoolers like a pub. I know a lot of you are probably too young to spend a lot of time in pubs but you know the basic idea. There are a bunch of tables of people chillin, drinking, eating delicious pub food. Some are quietly talking about politics, some are laughing at each other and generally having a good time, some are being drunken (but harmless) idiots, another table is arguing intensely about whether the olympics are a positive or negative force. On the whole, everything's pretty pleasant. Then someone walks into the bar and starts being an asshole. Dude is yelling and shouting (who knows why), wandering around to tables trying to sell random people his screenprinted t-shirts and hanging up naked pictures all over the walls. The bar staff tells him to chill the fuck out, and he responds by screaming at them and making rude comments about their sexual orientation (which, by the way, offends the gay dude who's quietly enjoying a beer and watching Setanta at the bar). What do you expect is going to happen in this situation?

There is a point to this by the way - TWA and Elgato are doing such a kickass job we've decided why stop there? We want more new mods. The catch is we need some from different time zones, so we're looking for a couple of European mods, or Aussies, or Kiwis, or if you're in Japan, we are a cultural mosaic here at NS as you can see by the rainbow colours on the online list. If anyone has any good ideas about Member XYZ from Peru who'd totally be a great mod, please let me know. Or post about it below. Or both. Or neither. No, wait, not neither. Definitely do one of those things.

This is another instance where these judgment calls happen.

Deleting is sometimes the wrong way to go, because the person who had their thread deleted then goes "why was my post deleted", other people go "what post, what did it say", other people go "stop censoring newschoolers", shitshow commences, and no one really gets the message. Sometimes it's better to have something to point to and say "don't do this anymore".

For example, there are plenty of times where I have seen a post someone should be banned for, and rather than deleting it and banning them, I've banned them and left it up and quoted it to point out to everyone who might read that thread that they should avoid doing such things.

I know JD just said to not suggest changes to the site here, but I still need to suggest this once more.

when uploading pictures have it default to 'private pictures' instead of 'public pictures'. it would be quite simple to quickly change which little circle is checked off automatically and I'm sure would right away clean up the picture section a bunch. it would at least get rid of all the 'for thread' pictures of memes or what have you that no ones gives a shit about seeing.

Actually we're explaining just about everything everyone's asked about, which is the purpose of this thread. I'm not sure what you expected it to be about?

The purpose of the thread is not to have every member's idea for how they'd like the site to be run accepted and implemented on the spot Now, if you don't AGREE with our reasoning, that's fine, but we're not going to just jump on a suggestion like "eliminate all moderators" or "make calling people fa**ots okay", and it's pretty ridiculous to think that we would.

And yes, if you really don't like NS, you can of course go ahead and start your own web forum and run it however you want.

Truthfully I think the rules are crystal clear and I'm generally baffled when people try and argue their bands over an obvious violation of site rules.

I was more of less stating that as a talking point for members who think a certain rule is "unfair" or perhaps could use an amendment or further clarification.

The most frequently broken rules (from what i've seen) are:

"Contains any form of discrimination based on race, gender, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation or age. This includes words, abbreviations and slang which has a negative connotation.

and

"Contains links to sexually explicit or offensive material"

It seems to be a simple maturity thing, a desire for attention, or just people taking a shot at authority when they get banned. the system is fine, people are just complaining a lot lately.

^Alright I give up... I've tried to reply to this twice, both times NS has screwed up when I hit submit. Maybe I'll type it out again later. In super short form though, it's really not hard to not type racist, sexist or homophobic slurs (just don't call people f**s or ni**ers or tell pink names to prepare food for you and you're usually okay).

As for the grey area, refer to bar analogy above. Usually your post will get deleted if it's over-the-line offensive but not in the above category. That is a warning to stop doing that kind of shit. If you get a reputation for being an asshole eventually a bunch of us will notice, and kick you out of the pub.

By the way I had someone email me this morning complaining about being banned for calling someone a fa**ot, it was his third time being banned for the exact same reason yet he couldn't understand why it happened. It boggles the mind, how hard is this to figure out?

Also, FYI, we can see every ban everyone has ever had and why, since the new mod tools were implemented several years ago. If you've been banned for the same thing previously the length of the ban will usually go up each time, i.e. if it was 3 days last time, it's a week this time, if it was a week, now it's 2, etc. Obviously length of ban also depends on how bad the mod feels the offense was. Making fun of someone's dead relative is probably going to be longer than referring to a black dude on tv by a racial slur even though both will result in a time out.

I'm sorry that you feel that way. Our goal of this thread is to simply educate members about why certain actions are taken. IE - Why a thread was deleted, or why a member was banned.

Everyone has different expectations of how the site should be run. Our expectations fall in line with how the admins would like to see it run. In the end, the admins wishes win since they are the ones paying to keep this ship afloat.

no worries man. As I said, and as you've stated, it's pretty obvious what's ok and what's not. It's simple common sense.

And referring to your most recent post of people being banned for the same offense over and over, you're just never going to get through to them until it's an IP ban or a total outlaw of their name or taking away all their posts. With any forum website we just have to take the good with the bad, and it's mostly good thankfully.

I feel like it should be pointed out that few intelligent posts have come from people who have been banned or who want to argue against reasons for being banned....what I mean is that if you don't give a shit about the rules and about being banned...you're just going to keep doing it anyway and while it is a nice gesture and a good thing for you guys as mods to re-evaluate and try to better the system, the system is good. does that make sense? i guess i'm saying those who get banned don't care about giving feedback or helping, they'll just continue to break rules because they don't care anyway. not about improving anything at least.

i think the moderation on NS is being done very well !

some more things i personally would like to see done:

reposts: what boots/what skis, etc... if its a gear question, most of the mods know their fair share about skiing and can easily point beginners into the right direction when it comes down to said gear, just PM them, perhaps link to a relevant thread, and delete OP ...

Reposts in general, delete unless the thread has really kicked off better than the original or has turned into an epic NS shitstorm (the good type of shitstorm, not the one where actual shit can fly around and explode in your face)

Moderation: i'd really like to see euro mods....

Moderation2: NS really needs a "report" system, i see so much spam/crap all over the site, but reporting every little thing through PM or email is too much work for me, just give me a goddamn button !! :)

Outerwear threads in geartalk, GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY GEARTALK !! Same goes for reposts in geartalk, easily 50% of all threads in GT is a huge repost or not threadworthy (ie. How do i cut down poles? what boots should i get? do these skipants make me look fat? What ski should i get (i ski park), etc....)

also i don't know how much "moderation" is done in the picture section, right now 50most recent uploads => 1 about skiing,

49 others = apeshit .....

those were just the things that popped into my head, still think the mods are doing a great job at keeping this circus going :)

I'm pretty happy with the moderation these days. The one thing I don't agree with is threads that are attacking religion, it's not cool. I don't agree with that.

I'm fine with people discussing religion and God and religious stuff, but just the threads that attack them. That's where I think the line should be drawn. Because how much of a contribution to NS is that really?

Religion is one of the few "hot button" topics on NS. it immediately causes a shitstorm because people (including myself) have very strong and passionate opinions on it. the same thing happens with the PC vs. Mac threads.

They turn into a mess very quickly, but it's because people feel very strongly on those subjects.

Best Way to stop this is ultimately fix the search bar. One word searches suck at finding stuff. maybe even have a filter that searches thread content.

Also on the gear talk thing, someone should make a sticky or regularly updated blog post with the useful tutorials in gear talk so there is not as many reposts.

One more thing, this really isn't a moderation thing, but I think it would help. Make it so you must "read" and agree to the rules when you register for the site. Like a terms of service type of deal. You register, you check the box, if you break said rules, expect a ban, no questions asked, none of that "I didn't know cause I never go into the dead section known as site discussion"

You agreed to them, you broke them, be banned.

I personally think the moderation here is incredibly well done. I've been banned once, for a day, for a troll thread, and it was justified, even if i was kinda annoyed at the time. People who don't have enough sense not to call someone a f*g or a n***er shouldn't be on this site to begin with. I can't think of anything that the mods could be doing, that could be improved, and honestly if they're not doing anything wrong neither should most members.

The problem with common sense is that it's not common. "Fag" is actually offensive to people. There are gay users on the site who have made it clear that it's offensive to them when people use that word.

4chan "mime" shit is annoying to most, but it's occasionally funny or fitting at the least, and it's not offensive in and of itself.

But about the whole calling people names and stuff.
