Ever wonder how those stunning images of the stars and milky way you see are taken?
Ever want to do those yourself?

You've come to the right place.

Recently got into astrophotography and figured I'd share the love, since nearly every person I showed it to asked "How did you do that?".

Step by step starts NOW.

1) Get your shit together. Tripod is ESSENTIAL if you have one. Remote shutter release is helpful. Oh, and you'll need a night sky. One with little to no light pollution, no clouds, and little air traffic (best around 3-4 am).

2) Pick your spot and angle to sky, remember that the foreground content will be illuminated and plays a big role in the overall appeal of the picture. Take a few practice shots using the flash to see what it will look like without the stars. A great star picture involves both breathtaking stars and an interesting foreground.
-Also, Look for what looks like a long cloud stretching across the sky at a diagonal angle. Almost foggy, but not blocking stars. If you can see this, you're in luck. That's the milky way. INCORPORATE IT. You won't be disappointed.

3) Set up your tripod. Now you can set your DSLR on a bench or something as long as it will not move a fraction of an inch in 30 seconds...not recommended though.

4) Open your aperture as WIDE as it goes (that's a low f stop number if you didn't know). My lens only goes down to f/3.8, a lot go lower. This is good, you want to let as much light in as possible.

5) Set your shutter speed to 30 seconds. Anything longer than this at 18mm or more will pick up the stars' tracking (the movement of the earth) and leave short, unappealing trails.

6) Optimal ISO range is between 2000 and 4000. 2500 is ideal.

7) Finally, set your timer (or remote shutter release) and FIRE!

If all goes well, you should be pleased and blown away by what your camera can do. It's picking up light sources from billions of lightyears away. How's that for telephoto?

****Things to remember
--Rule of 600. Divide 600 by your focal length (18mm, 55mm, etc). The answer will be your maximum exposure before the stars begin tracking (leaving trails)

EXAMPLE. 18mm lens = 600 / 18 = 33.333
^ Therefore I can leave the shutter open for 33 seconds before losing clarity. Note that the further you zoom, the less time you will have before they track. Adjust accordingly.

--Try to time it so there will be no planes streaking across your shot. Nothing ruins a great picture better than a white and red dash across the frame

--Take a bunch of pictures! You have all night, and the chances of getting another clear night the next night are low.

If your camera has long exposure noise reduction, take one picture with it on and one picture with it off. Sometimes it will eliminate the tiny stars and take away from your shot, yet other times it will do you great justice in removing annoying foreground noise.

Examples! I shot all of these at 30" f/3.8 ISO 2500 with noise reduction OFF (forgot about it)

3 errors in this one: Bland foreground (note difference in next exposure), crooked horizon, and the plane seen in the middle

My personal favorite/best

Best part about these, people go NUTS for them. Bitches, on your dick. Because your camera can see the milky way.

"My camera can see the milky way. What can you do?"

Joel.

Woah thanks homie!!! oh and i forgot to mention i didnt bring my tripod on this trip so i used a rag and a bunch of rocks. that might explain the bit of track the stars had as the camera may have shifted on the pile of rocks haha. Thanks again man

That's probably because of the shutter speed and focal length you used. What's the EXIF on those babies?

maybe, but i used the rule of 600 and used an 18 mm. so that gives me 33.3... seconds to keep my shutter open. ummmm and these were 30 second exposures, with the 18mm. and my canon t2i formats these as "CR2" when i have them on RAW . I think thats what you mean by EXIF. is that what you're looking for sir?

EXIF is pretty much an information file saved with your JPEG/RAW images. In principle, it's embedded in the file itself, but can be removed. This information consists of focal length, ISO, aperture, which camera you used, which lens, GPS location, date/time etc. Asking for the EXIF basically means: what FL, ISO and aperture did you use.
But if you used an 18mm, basically a 28mm on crop, you should use a faster SS I guess, though I never really had problems with shooting stars at 35mm and a 25-30 second shutter.

good to know. i'm definitely gonna keep trying different things to try to refine my star shots, i find them really interesting. all this talk about star trails inpsired me to finally uplaod this little experiment. still a lot of things i'd change in it, like for one the song but still, tell me what you think.

Thanks for the reminder, I thought it was later so I would've missed it otherwise, actually got a meteor on my first test shot :P The light pollution was pretty bad from the moon so only the stronger meteors could be seen but I got lucky, just look at the full crop.

Its going to be crazy again tonight, don't worry! Also- If you look on the eastern horizon, you'll see Jupiter, Venus, and the moon all lined up. Its going to be cool tonight.

I have two a day practices at 7 am tomorrow, so I'll be setting my alarm for 4 am. I will try to get as many pictures possible.

im pretty late to this thread, but 2500 ISO seems mighty high. would noise be noticeable if i were to blow the photos up to a decent size?

It depends what rate your shutter is at as well as your aperture. But, in most cases you will get a bit of noise with a high ISO. Usually nothing a little editing can't take care of however.

I did another panorama, much more stoked about how well this one turned out in comparison to the last one... The embed is the lower resolution file, but I'll include a link below to the full 14000 x 7000 shot in case you're in the market for a new desktop background.

all EXIF data you should need is probably on the 500px.com link that i embedded from.

12 horizontal shots, 3 rows and 4 columns, starting in the bottom far left, then middle far left, then top far left, then bottom inner left, middle inner, etc. plus two shots of the lake to get more color/brightness

i imported the RAW files, edited one in lightroom, applied settings to all shots, did minor adjustments as per the shot. stitched together then with PTGui Pro. finally opened in Photoshop and added the silver lake from the brighter shots i had taken. saved image, upload.

My problem is this. I tried my first attempt at astrophotography last night. First problem is i do not have the "infinity sign" on my lense so how am i supposed to figure how to get the pic in focus. I tried for over 2 hours and couldn't get it. Next, could you guys recommend me some lenses just for night photography with the infinity sign that are not to expensive. Also i could not figure out is there any way to have your t2i take a photo every 5 seconds to make a night sky time-lapse instead of just taking a movie? Thanks for your help here is some examples of the problem

look for any used legacy lens. the faster and the wider, the better. Faster is better for low light, and wider helps you to get more in focus when shooting wide open. A canon 24mm f2.8 is around $300, A helios is faster, and only $30, but it is 58mm which is pretty tight on a crop sensor. If you are going to go $400 or more, I would just save up for the tokina 11-16, its around$600-$700. Also, nearly any old lens will have hard stops for the focus as well as a distance scale etc. you can use focus by wire, you actually seemed to get it in the second picture, but it is easier with a manual lens. for a t2i, download magic lantern or buy a intervalometer to get it to go automatically. then you import it as an image sequence and each picture becomes a frame of the video.

all EXIF data you should need is probably on the 500px.com link that i embedded from. 12 horizontal shots, 3 rows and 4 columns, starting in the bottom far left, then middle far left, then top far left, then bottom inner left, middle inner, etc. plus two shots of the lake to get more color/brightness i imported the RAW files, edited one in lightroom, applied settings to all shots, did minor adjustments as per the shot. stitched together then with PTGui Pro. finally opened in Photoshop and added the silver lake from the brighter shots i had taken. saved image, upload.
just looked at the full size. Have you tried doing anything with puppet warp in photoshop? It could help you straighten out the horizon, unless you were going for that look. Just one little thing I noticed, but otherwise awesome shot

I just barely caught Venus, the moon, and Jupiter being aligned this morning. It was a really cool sight.

I tried some a couple of weeks ago, went okay.

Good shot of the sky/exposure length I thought but no subject so it's kinda boring IMO.

and these I should have just done for shorter

I also felt like I was having problems focusing

At first I tried to avoid it, but after further consideration, I actually did really like the sort of "fisheye" and kept it!

I could be wrong, but I think it's heat noise, from the sensor heating up

looks to me like ordinary noise. did you have automatic long exposure noise reduction on in your custom functions?

it looks normal to me too (for long exposures, not for normal high iso shooting). try adjusting the "color" slider ind noise reduction in lightroom. I haver heard it is good at removing this. Also try long exposure noise reduction, but it will take twice as long

so i finally decided to give this a shot. i heard the northen lights had been coming out in the past few nights but i had been going to bed pretty early to wake up for work, this far north it doesn't get dark until pretty late. so tonight i decided to stay awake and see if i could see anything. sure enough there was a faint streak across the sky, i almost didn't bother shooting it but i realized the camera would do a lot better job at picking them up. i'm pretty stoked on the results.
there's been a lot of bears in camp recently so i didn't want to walk too far to get a good angle or foreground, but oh well.
