Ever wonder how those stunning images of the stars and milky way you see are taken?
Ever want to do those yourself?

You've come to the right place.

Recently got into astrophotography and figured I'd share the love, since nearly every person I showed it to asked "How did you do that?".

Step by step starts NOW.

1) Get your shit together. Tripod is ESSENTIAL if you have one. Remote shutter release is helpful. Oh, and you'll need a night sky. One with little to no light pollution, no clouds, and little air traffic (best around 3-4 am).

2) Pick your spot and angle to sky, remember that the foreground content will be illuminated and plays a big role in the overall appeal of the picture. Take a few practice shots using the flash to see what it will look like without the stars. A great star picture involves both breathtaking stars and an interesting foreground.
-Also, Look for what looks like a long cloud stretching across the sky at a diagonal angle. Almost foggy, but not blocking stars. If you can see this, you're in luck. That's the milky way. INCORPORATE IT. You won't be disappointed.

3) Set up your tripod. Now you can set your DSLR on a bench or something as long as it will not move a fraction of an inch in 30 seconds...not recommended though.

4) Open your aperture as WIDE as it goes (that's a low f stop number if you didn't know). My lens only goes down to f/3.8, a lot go lower. This is good, you want to let as much light in as possible.

5) Set your shutter speed to 30 seconds. Anything longer than this at 18mm or more will pick up the stars' tracking (the movement of the earth) and leave short, unappealing trails.

6) Optimal ISO range is between 2000 and 4000. 2500 is ideal.

7) Finally, set your timer (or remote shutter release) and FIRE!

If all goes well, you should be pleased and blown away by what your camera can do. It's picking up light sources from billions of lightyears away. How's that for telephoto?

****Things to remember
--Rule of 600. Divide 600 by your focal length (18mm, 55mm, etc). The answer will be your maximum exposure before the stars begin tracking (leaving trails)

EXAMPLE. 18mm lens = 600 / 18 = 33.333
^ Therefore I can leave the shutter open for 33 seconds before losing clarity. Note that the further you zoom, the less time you will have before they track. Adjust accordingly.

--Try to time it so there will be no planes streaking across your shot. Nothing ruins a great picture better than a white and red dash across the frame

--Take a bunch of pictures! You have all night, and the chances of getting another clear night the next night are low.

If your camera has long exposure noise reduction, take one picture with it on and one picture with it off. Sometimes it will eliminate the tiny stars and take away from your shot, yet other times it will do you great justice in removing annoying foreground noise.

Examples! I shot all of these at 30" f/3.8 ISO 2500 with noise reduction OFF (forgot about it)

Best part about these, people go NUTS for them. Bitches, on your dick. Because your camera can see the milky way.

"My camera can see the milky way. What can you do?"

I've been itching for some milky way shots. I can't wait to get up to northern Minnesota, or even just camping, to get away from all the city lights!
I'm way too stoked to be finished my exams so that I can finally get out of the city and go somewhere cool so that I can get milky way shots. especially stoked to have a FX body to do so with

Here are 2 from a recent camping trip,

I couldn't find a composition I liked, I was really hoping to see the milky way, but our campsite was kind of tucked down in a river valley.

So here they are, straight out of camera, no editing.

"usually i just go out sober, find the drunkest girl at the party, take her home, rail her, then once she is good and passed out i then paint peanut butter all over her, call my dog in, she licks her, i watch and laugh, then at about 5am i carry her outside to my bush, drop her in it, put on a mask, and pour cold water all over her face. She usually wakes up and one of two things happens, she screams and stumbles away, or she doesn't wake, in which case I fuck her again." - ECB

I dunno how i feel about the mini trails, its kinda distracting. It looks like you are leaving your shutter open slightly to long for the lens youre shooting with.

Theres some equation that tells you how long you leave your shutter open for in order to get the most light, but no mini trails.

I also think its pretty neat when the trails get longer, like a definable trail. Just not in between. Keep messing with the settings its all about finding a happy medium.

Also iv never gotten a star shot i liked within 30 miles of the closet town, all that ambient light fucks with the awesomeness of the stars.

trying to do a better job of stitching the star panoramas. i did another star panorama yesterday, but it's been a bitch and a half to stitch because you want to spherically stitch them so that they overlap and the milky way's line actually connects the whole way, but you can't automatically stitch a star shot because it's so dark/not enough for a computer to stitch it, photoshop's photomerge doesn't get the job done because you can't stitch spherically manually, so the best way i think to do it is using the Autodesk Stitcher program. on the contrary, i can't seem to get a good render, because it's impossible to perfectly aline all of the stars, so when it fades the different images together, the stars look blurry and off. i'm trying to find an export setting that will give me hard edges between the different pictures to avoid that issue.

this is a fantastic example of how the kit lens isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. you can still get sick results if you know what you're doing

What have you guys been doing in post to bring out the milky way?

Depending on the picture, I'll work with color channels, contrast, and saturation to try and boost the presence of it, but it's hard. Really depends on the shot.

Ideas?

I've been mainly working with Lightroom. Boost highlights and whites, drop shadows and blacks, etc. Clarity is really helpful for popping it. WB of around 3500 or so always gives good results. I don't touch saturation, and I'll bring the contrast up a little bit. Trick to it is definitely in the Tone tab on LR for sure.

just uploaded it, feel free to give me tips on reducing the noise and boosting the color, though I already did quite a bit in lightroom. also I don't own an intervalometer, definitely need to pick one up. I sat there for a little over an hour pushing the shutter every ten seconds

stars themselves are cool, but the bottom half of the picture(including the clouds) kinda made it weird, how dark was it when you shot this?

very dark, it was from a little before midnight to a little after 1, but the orange may be partly from the sunsetting (the camera was aimed somewhat towards where the sun went down)

Hands: Weekly Photography Challenge
