Ever wonder how those stunning images of the stars and milky way you see are taken?
Ever want to do those yourself?

You've come to the right place.

Recently got into astrophotography and figured I'd share the love, since nearly every person I showed it to asked "How did you do that?".

Step by step starts NOW.

1) Get your shit together. Tripod is ESSENTIAL if you have one. Remote shutter release is helpful. Oh, and you'll need a night sky. One with little to no light pollution, no clouds, and little air traffic (best around 3-4 am).

2) Pick your spot and angle to sky, remember that the foreground content will be illuminated and plays a big role in the overall appeal of the picture. Take a few practice shots using the flash to see what it will look like without the stars. A great star picture involves both breathtaking stars and an interesting foreground.
-Also, Look for what looks like a long cloud stretching across the sky at a diagonal angle. Almost foggy, but not blocking stars. If you can see this, you're in luck. That's the milky way. INCORPORATE IT. You won't be disappointed.

3) Set up your tripod. Now you can set your DSLR on a bench or something as long as it will not move a fraction of an inch in 30 seconds...not recommended though.

4) Open your aperture as WIDE as it goes (that's a low f stop number if you didn't know). My lens only goes down to f/3.8, a lot go lower. This is good, you want to let as much light in as possible.

5) Set your shutter speed to 30 seconds. Anything longer than this at 18mm or more will pick up the stars' tracking (the movement of the earth) and leave short, unappealing trails.

6) Optimal ISO range is between 2000 and 4000. 2500 is ideal.

7) Finally, set your timer (or remote shutter release) and FIRE!

If all goes well, you should be pleased and blown away by what your camera can do. It's picking up light sources from billions of lightyears away. How's that for telephoto?

****Things to remember
--Rule of 600. Divide 600 by your focal length (18mm, 55mm, etc). The answer will be your maximum exposure before the stars begin tracking (leaving trails)

EXAMPLE. 18mm lens = 600 / 18 = 33.333
^ Therefore I can leave the shutter open for 33 seconds before losing clarity. Note that the further you zoom, the less time you will have before they track. Adjust accordingly.

--Try to time it so there will be no planes streaking across your shot. Nothing ruins a great picture better than a white and red dash across the frame

--Take a bunch of pictures! You have all night, and the chances of getting another clear night the next night are low.

If your camera has long exposure noise reduction, take one picture with it on and one picture with it off. Sometimes it will eliminate the tiny stars and take away from your shot, yet other times it will do you great justice in removing annoying foreground noise.

Examples! I shot all of these at 30" f/3.8 ISO 2500 with noise reduction OFF (forgot about it)

Best part about these, people go NUTS for them. Bitches, on your dick. Because your camera can see the milky way.

Here's my stab at astrophotography or whatever you call it. Accidentally had my focal length too zoomed in (it's night, I have no clue what the focal length is) at 25mm. Shutter was set at 25 seconds I believe, aperture at f/4, iso at 3200, and WB at around 2900 kelvin. Having it too zoomed in gave me an ugly star trail sorta thing (still kicking myself for that) and I generally got lucky on focusing in on the subject (AF doesn't work when pitch-black). Without further ado, here it is

Here's a couple I did a while back.

Camera setup - Nikon D3x on Manfrotto tripod, with the nikkor 50mm 1.8.

I shot three exposures, each 10 seconds I think, pointed in the same direction. Then I took moved the head, to create a pano. Each one of these is a total of 9 shots. I did 3 shots and stacked them in PS so they would line up, as obviously they move between shots. Then I did blending layers which helped to remove noise and bring out the colors. Then I stitched them manually.

I think they are pretty cool.

Does anyone know where you get the intense color from though? here's an example - friend shot this on a 7d:

no matter how many times I've tried, I can't suck that color out of my camera (D300) in-camera or in post. I know that this is most done in post. Does anyone know what's up? Are Canon's sensors better suited for this?

Was his photo taken around the same time you captured your's? Might have to do with where and when he's shooting in relation to certain things in space.

I would assume it was pretty similar. My shots are similar parts of the milky way.

But I'm not comparing mine to his exactly (although it would be epic to replicate those colors in such a tighter crop). I'm saying that every time i've tried it, summer, winter, all times of the night and even super wide like his shot is - I've never been able to get those colors.

I've been doing some star photography lately here in MA. I'm 30 miles outside of Boston and a few other cities. I get crazy amounts of light pollution from them despite their distance. I didn't think it made that big of a deal until the other day when I visited Vermont (Middle of nowhere Vermont). It was insane how intense the sky and milky way were and I was able to get some very intense shots of them. Their colors were much more vibrant then my original shots back in Massachusetts. I know you said your buddy was only 60 miles apart, but that could be a big part of why/how he got those awesome colors. Not to sure on that though I was just providing some personal feedback :)

Yea, that light you see in the right is the Salt Lake Valley... it's nice to get out further.

I've also tried it in CA, with the closest major city being about 80 miles away on the other side of the sierra nevada, still couldn't make it happen though. I am frustrate!

And Trevor, I've found that I can only get those intense colors when I'm way out in the middle of nowhere...as in a 3 hour drive from the nearest light source.

Might have something to do with the time of year and the day, seeing that everything is rotating/revolving he might have had a brighter and wider portion closer or something. I feel like the majority of that shot is edited though, that's got the colors of the Hubble Deep Space Telescope, and to take those images they shoot and then add colors in layers. Maybe he shot then bumped up the saturation a ton in that area...i dunno haha.

For some reason I don't believe in editing shots. I dunno why.

For the focal length, do I take the focal length of the lens, or should I adjust it for the crop. Eg I have a GH2 (with a 2x crop) with a 14-42. If I want to shoot at 14mm, do I divide 600 by 14, or by 28?

On most crop sensors, iso 2000+ is really pushing it. I usually try and max out at 800 for minimal noise

i can't completely agree with this, everything else is solid but the ISO range depends completely on your camera, some handle noise a lot better than others
One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."

True, true.

It's all personal preference. Typically hi iso = more light = more stars and shit, and conversly more noise, but if your camera can handle it this is where you want to be. there are so many variables, like if you're shooting with a 55mm f/1.2 lens or something (totally random numbers fyi), you wouldn't be able to expose for as long but your aperature will be wider....you get what i'm saying. these are base numbers and good starting points. i obviously can't give tips that will apply to ALL cameras, this works well for higher end DSLRs. I have a D7000 and it works perfect, some dude with a nicer canon showed me how. So really these should just act as a starting point. Try with these numbers, then start fooling around with each aspect accordingly.

Does anyone know where you get the intense color from though? here's an example - friend shot this on a 7d: Click for larger image no matter how many times I've tried, I can't suck that color out of my camera (D300) in-camera or in post. I know that this is most done in post. Does anyone know what's up? Are Canon's sensors better suited for this?
I have some like this from my 7D too but my color is not quite that insane (could be because I process different and don't saturate too much?). Maybe it is a camera difference?

I decided to give it a try last night. Here's what I came out with. They're pretty bad, but hey, I'm learning.

There was heat lightning in the distance which gave me these colors, I just gave it a touch of saturation in post, this is very similar to how it looked off the camera. I did, however, use too high of an ISO so there's some seriously bad noise.

I feel like this would be a better method if you can do it, cause using the bulb feature leaves the sensor vulnerable to airplanes and over exposure from other light sources....but it can work as well if you're off in the middle of nowhere.

Hands: Weekly Photography Challenge

Apr 6th 2012

This week we’ve chosen a theme that should be accessible to most of us – hands.
