147 pages in the 2010-11 Thread. Here start's next season.

Now the season's over, Boston has the cup for the summer, but it's all up for grabs come autumn. Bump it through the slow summer months as transactions occur

Oh, and to start some tradition: LOL @ Anaheim.

Who's winning the cup next?
Have a nice day, Bluename.

Marc Bergevin is one of the candidates for the new habs' GM; after watching that video I'm starting to have doubts haha.

Sean - the Marc Bergevin incident is something that has never been seen before or since, and the Blues no longer have Roman Turek in goal - they have the best goalie tandem arguably in history.

I actually don't believe that because I don't have faith in any unproven playoff goalie, hence I don't have faith in Elliot. But Halak alone is enough.

Goals from centre will not be the difference. The difference is that the Sharks are not the Sharks of a decade plus ago. The Sharks are basically the Sharks of last year who made it to the WCF. That is a formidable force for an unproven playoff squad. Most of that roster, the real core of the squad, has exactly 4 playoff games - the wrong side of the only series sweep in Canucks history, circa 2009. They're the rawest bunch in the West playoff picture. That's the difference. That's why Sharks in 7.

I could see it going either way. I'm actually kinda excited to NOT have home-ice advantage again. Winning one of the first two games could absolutely wreck that unproven squad. They do have their fair share of veterans however, so I really don't think they'll play all that inexperinced... the Sharks however, are going to scare the pants off of them with how they have played to end the season, and how they have 4 playoff series wins in the last 2 years.

As for players throwing the puck in the net, and Goalies getting handcuffed by lazerbeam red liners, It will come down more to how effective the Sharks' offense is in juxtaposition to the Blues' very solid defensive play.

I still say that this is the most talented roster in Sharks history. More talented and experienced than the hypothetical 2005 squad. They are relatively healthy going in as well - something that is going to allow them to still go far in a series due to the ridiculous plethora of depth. Goalie play will be important, but Niemi really just has to show up like he did last year for the most part. As long as he doesn't screw up like early in the LA series, SJ should do just fine.

The Blues enter the playoffs playing pretty 'meh' in the last 15 games or so, and the Sharks are on a hot streak - with a lot of confidence and a lot to prove. I want to say Sharks in 6. But at the same time, its hard to get around the whole 0-4 regular season record against that team. We'll just have to see.

Wait... What the heck, we have to have a full - obnoxiously long - prediction post from me right? What kinda thread would this be otherwise...

First up? THE EAST (only because the sun rises there first...)

1. New York Rangers v.
8. Ottawa Senators

The Rangers have been the most dominant defensive team in the east, and with Lundquist playing in perhaps his best season yet, they are poised for a deep run if they can keep it up. They have a fairly experienced squad, and with Gaborik being fed from Richards, they absolutely have the offensive firepower to keep up with almost anyone with that tandem alone. Then you have guys like Callahan, Stepan, and Anisimov who are all great secondary scorers on the other 3 lines. Definitely tough to deal with.

The Senators? I wrote them off months ago and said they'd be the east's version of the Wild. I was wrong, absolutely - but ultimately not by much. They definitely played far better than I expected them to, and have a guy in Karlsson who is just stupid good - like 1980's offensive defenseman good. They have tons of offensive power, and are absolutely awesome fun to watch. However, with their offense, they also have a pretty weak defense and allow goals like crazy. Anderson is a pretty decent goaltender - and can steal games (he also has some playoff pedigree against my Sharks), but he's out on a limb half the time in front of a very offensively minded defense which isn't the best at actually defending. Team gives up about as many goals as they get, so it all evens out.

I feel like the Rags have the advantage in the series being a stronger defensive side - which tends to have more success in playoffs, but the Sens did win the season series 3-1. If all goes as expected, and the Rangers play the balanced game they have, they shouldn't have a ton of trouble against Ottawa. Ottawa will win a game or two, but New York will take it in 6.

2. Boston Bruins v.
7. Washington Capitals

The Bruins are yet again poised to go deep into the playoffs, and I believe they will. They have mostly the same team as last year, with 2 playoff grinder twinetenders who know the ropes. They are strong offensively, very hard to beat defensively, and once in a while, a guy like Tim Thomas will probably make some circus save that will demoralize you. They are a crazy hard matchup - perhaps the toughest in the east.

The Capitals were my pick to win the east this year at the beginning of the season - really awesome offseason additions and a healthy squad? seemed like the year. Now they are down to their 3rd goaltender and have struggled all year. Strong play at the end got them in over the Sabres, and they move up a spot on the Senators after they mosey'd into the gate... but ultimately, they might be downright FUCKED with their current goaltender situation. They rely too much on primary scorers, and don't get enough physical play from their defense to go toe to toe with boston in a playoff series. They did win the regular season 3-1, but now they have serious concerns.

Boston will score seemingly at will, and Washington will struggle to defend with a questionmark in net. Boston in 5

4. Pittsburgh Penguins
5. Philadelphia Flyers

Fuck. Yes. This. Is. Happening.

Easily the most anticipated playoff matchup out of all, this offseason - NBC is going to have a total field day with this one. Neither team likes each other. At all. This fucker is going to be a total war on ice, and will have some stellar play in the interim. I cannot fucking wait for this one. So much star power. Giroux, Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Jagr, goalies in "Brickwallov" (this is what we used to call him in San Jose when he was in Phx and Anaheim) and Mr. Flower who can both steal games and are some of the best in the league, and so much awesome secondary scoring on both sides - this will be a fun one to tune into - way better than 08 and 09. I'm going to talk little about this one, because the rest of you and the media will do most of my job for me, but I can only hope this 6th rendition of the keystone showdown goes 7 games, and that's what I'm going to say. Pittsburgh in 7.

3. Florida Panthers v.
6. New Jersey Devils.

Honestly, I know absolutely jack dick about either of these teams in comparison to the other 3 matchups. I haven't followed the Panthers much, and the Devils have always been a team that, almost irregardless of the game, I don't even want to watch, just because its the friggin Devils, and I always just think of them saving every shot with Brodeur in net even to this day - I haven't even really cared for them to win in anything other than that snoozer of a series against Anaheim about 8 years ago.

The little I do understand about the teams is that New Jersey has a ridiculous PK that means they can punch you in the face and get away with it just about whenever they want - whether that translates to playoff hockey remains to be seen - especially against Florida, which scores has had pretty strong offensive play this season, and does very well on the PP. NJ still has Brodeur in net, and this might even be his last go-around unless he decides to go all Dominik Hasek on us and plays till he's geriatric. Florida isn't letting us know who is going to start between the pipes on thursday, so I'll just assume it's Theodore for now - who's had a pretty decent season - as I expected for him, to be honest. Brian Campbell has been fantastic for Florida, and Thomas Fleischmann was a KILLER pickup for that team.

Irregardless, The Florida Panthers are a joke of a 3rd seed - especially with their shit the bed play over the 2nd half of the season where they just floated around and eventually won the 'whos the least ugly fat girl' contest in the NHL's 'Jesusland' Division... The Devils are a much more experienced squad, with better defensive capabilities, and have star players like Kovalchuk who will murder you if you leave them an inch of space to do so. This is playoff hockey however, and a team like Florida, who has all season long played scrappy as shit, and with the pressure of trying to make the playoffs for the first time since Gretzky roamed the ice lifted off their shoulders, they might absolutely throw down a barrage on a Devils squad who isn't really a huge threat at this juncture. I say this series goes 7 games, and hopefully Florida wins out - just so maybe we can see some Rats again.

And now, THE WEST - where the real wars will be waged.

1. Vancouver Canucks v.
8. Los Angeles Kings

I already spoke of the potential playoff matchup here about a week or so ago when J.D. and I were discussing potential playoff matchups, so if you go back there, you can find out how I feel about the Kings. Aside from my regional hatred for LA and Southern California, and thereby obvious contempt for the Kings, I am man enough to admit that this is a CRAZY good hockey team. The last 2 games against the Sharks proved that to me yet again. Sure, the Sharks were able to somehow come back from multi-goal deficits (something the Kings seem to really have a problem doing - holding leads) in the last 2 games, but they are far stronger even after the trade deadline. They acquired some really strong players this year, and if i saw this roster at the beginning of the season, I'd have wet myself even more than I did initially.

They are scary deep, and I sometimes can't even believe they fit in under the cap with that much talent. They have a Vezina calibre goaltender in Jonathan Quick, and have one of the best defenses in the league. They are physical up and down their roster, and really don't give you a lot to work with. They have their mindfart games though, where they just cannot put the goal in net - as scoring has been their achillies heel all season long. Regardless of that, I feel that they are the most ridiculous 8th seed I've seen in a VERY long time, and they will definitely give the Canucks some battle - especially seeing as they are mostly healthy this year, whereas last year, they were not as strong, and were without their top player in Kopitar for the series against the Sharks.

Oh, the Canucks. Where to start. Other than trading away their future Yzerman as J.D. put it... this year has been ultimately successful for them. They are mostly the same team as the team that went 4 rounds last year, and probably should have won the cup. They won the Presidents trophy again for the 2nd year in a row - which is pretty impressive - and they again have the best PP in the game. They remain the scariest team in hockey, and Daniel Sedin or not, they will probably be the last ones standing at the end of the day. They attack in waves, and the waves that come are monsters. No team in the league sustains pressure in the offensive zone like Vancouver.

It's Strong Defense and Questionable Scoring vs. Solid Defense and Outstanding Scoring. I pick Vancouver in 7.

2. St. Louis Blues v.
7. San Jose Sharks

Well, now that we've pretty much talked about this series already, I'll just add a little bit here. The Blues are the best team in the NHL in Fenwick Close since the 2010 Blackhawks downright ran the table to the cup. They have played slightly mediocre in their last 15 games, going 7-4-4, in comparison to their red hot season the rest of the time, but the players have bought into hitchcock's methods and they are still scary as shit going into the playoffs. I could easily see San Jose dropping the first 2 games like they did in Vancouver last year. They have home ice advantage - where they really don't lose - which is scary since San Jose was a bad road team this year, and they NEED to win in St. Louis... but I do feel like they have the upper hand in experience. It's the Blue's Defense-first oppurtunistic offensive play vs. San Jose's balanced, spread the ice wide open play. San Jose will need to stay hot to win their first game against St. Louis this year - much less win 4.

I say Sharks in 6 if they stay hot. St. Louis in 4 if that status quo resumes.

3. Phoenix Coyotes v.
6. Chicago Blackhawks

The Coyotes won their first division title in FRANCHISE history - that includes the ancient Jets' seasons. That's big for them - especially when, to be honest, I saw them out of the playoffs this year. Tippett however, probably deserves the Adams every single season because of what he gets out of his players. They lost their rock in Ilya Brickwallov (see?) during the offseason. So they go and get Mike Smith, who, beyond all expectations, records 8 shutouts (including like 3 against the Sharks - what the fuck?) and wins an assload of games. Then, they get this crazy breakout season from Radim Vrbata - who's always been a pretty solid player, but the dude has been a psycho at scoring this season with 35 goals. That's like 11 more than he's ever had in a season, and the dude's 30. Again though, I feel like Phoenix is a bit gimmicky and doesn't have a lot of depth for the playoffs. They are stingy as fuck and play hard, but I'm not sure if they can pull it out when they really just don't even know what home-ice-advantage feels like on any given night.

The Blackhawks are better than they were last year, except at Goalie. Crawford isn't as solid as he was last year, and though I'm confident he'll step it up in the playoffs and do well, I still feel like he could just as easily blow it. The Hawks went on a similar shit streak to the Sharks this year, and came out of it perhaps a little stronger. They are now fairly healthy (seemingly) and poised to make a good run in the playoffs if they can get by Phoenix. I'm sure, like everyone else, Chicago is the EASIEST low seed to pick to upset in this years' playoffs, but I wouldn't totally count out Phoenix. They might have got slammed around by Detroit pretty hard the last few years, but maybe a different shade of opposing red in the crowd might make things better.

I still say Chicago in 6.

4. Nashville Predators v.
5. Detroit Red Wings.

Yet another matchup between these two. I think this is like the 3rd time in the last decade we've seen this matchup. Detroit won the first two, but I feel like Nashville will finally make headway this time and claim it.

Nashville is super scary to me for a few things. Best defensive pairing in the league, and probably the scariest goalie to face in the league. Rinne, Weber, and Suter. Yoikes. They aren't the strongest offense, but are better this year than in years past. They remind me a lot like a more established St. Louis without the crazy goalie tandem, and perhaps a bit less lower line depth? They play a very strong defensive game and can plow their way though a series by just getting the lucky bounce here and there.

Detroit is Detroit. Same old Detroit. A year older, but they are stuck in a time warp that doesn't allow them to age much. Great addition adding Ian White in the offseason has made up for the hole left in the blueline, and Howard has improved a lot this season. Having a healthy squad will really do wonders for them this season.

I say Nashville in 7 just because I feel like it, but really this is probably the hardest series to predict out of all of them, because both teams are so evenly matched and have so much equal star power on opposite ends. There's a lot more to say about this one but I almost don't even want to get into it at this point haha.

PLAYOFF TIME!!!! WOOOOO LETS HAVE SOME FUN! TIME TO GROW YOUR BEARDS (you all know I have mine in full swing - as I've rocked it all season long this go-around)
Have a nice day, Bluename.

So here are my predictions, not gonna go into as much detail as Sean because, well frankly i can't be bothered.

Click for larger image

NYR over OTT because they are simply the better team and the King will go into beast mode and be unbeatable and then NY offense will have to score little to get the job done, something that may be difficult against Anderson but i say
NYR in 6

Boston over Washington because I just don't have faith in Wash and Boston is a very similar team to last year and once again a threat.
Boston in 5

NJ over Florida because its New Jersey, they have the experience and are competent at both ends of the rink. With Brodeur in net they will always have a chance and with the firepower of Kovalchuk, Parise and Elias they should be ok. I think Florida will give them trouble but in the end will fall. This is probably the series i care least about but in the end i predict
NJ in 7

Philly vs. Pitt, where to start. This series is going to be amazing and probably the best one in the first round, these 2 teams despise each other and that always make for a great series. Honestly I can see this series going either way but I hope and believe it will go 7 games. In the end I picked Philly because I think Hartnell will go BEAST this series and be the reason Philly wins.
Philly in 7

Van over LA because its Vancouver, they are my team and have pretty much the same core as last year. I believe they are stronger this year then last and are a bit more balanced throughout the line-up. If Luongo does struggle this year i don't think management will fret as much and put Schneider in, hes proved he can play and could easily carry this team if Luongo does melt. LA is the one team I did not want to face in the first round. They have terrific goaltending a great defense and an offense that has really underachieved all year. They have great balance throughout their line-up, good size and guys with a lot of experience. This series is gonna be hard fought and really tough on both team but in the end I see Vancouver taking it.
Vancouver in 6

SJ over STL, though i could see this going the other way if San Jose's play drops off again. I feel I could regret this pick but I just think that come playoffs SJ will step it up this year and considering their team is better then last they could do some damage. STL has been pretty consistent all year and while they have been slumping a little lately they still have the goaltending and defense style to scare anyone. A few bounces will decide this series.
SJ in 7

Chicago over PHX as much as I want to see Chicago get knocked out, I think they will survive one round. Though their team is nowhere as good as when they won the cup they are still a talented team that could do some damage. If Toews is ready for game 1 its much better for them, if he doesn't return till later this series will be longer. Even with Phoenix winning the division I just don't see them being a threat.
If Toews play from game 1 onwards CHI in 5
If Toews returns later then game 1 CHI in 7

DET over NASH because its Detroit. No matter how much older they get they never seem to get any worse. They just keep going and with talent such as Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterburg and Howard they are always a threat. Plus they have Franzen who always seems to go Beast in the playoffs. Nashville by no means is a pushover and could easily take this series with their great goaltending and defense, plus their offense is a bit more balanced this year. However, in the end I think Detroit's experience will play a huge role and Datsyuk and Franzen will have huge games each.
DET in 7

Alright, maybe I did go into some detail, but its playoff time.
And I am shaving today so the playoff beard starts today.

Have fun all, GO CANUCKS GO, and Mission 16W starts Thursday at 4:30am!!

Solid posts up there. It seems like a lot of series will go down to a game 7 which is music to my ears. Can't wait. One more day

PLAYOFF TIME!!!! WOOOOO LETS HAVE SOME FUN! TIME TO GROW YOUR BEARDS (you all know I have mine in full swing - as I've rocked it all season long this go-around)
If only - starting a new job tomorrow so there will be no playoff beard for me this year.

Shame.

JD's auto-load vid must have been deleted while I was writing a response to his comment of Tim Thomas being a d-bag for walking away from reporters after they asked him about the Washington/White House deal being a topic in the playoffs.

How does that make him a douche? Who the fuck cares that he didn't go to the White House? It was a personal choice and happened 2 1/2 months ago. You want to babble about someone in professional sports being a d-bag then go pick on Ozzie Guillen or one of many many other athletes that are a hell of a lot more disrepectful.

Doesn't even count as a playoff beard if you start early anyway.

I feel like I want to revise my picks just to be contrary to the established wisdom and pick Phoenix, Detroit and Philadelphia. But I just can't pick Phoenix. Revised picks:

Vancouver over LA in 6

San Jose over St. Louis in 7

Chicago over Phoenix in 6

Detroit over Nashville in 7

Rangers over Senators in 5

Boston over Washington in 6

New Jersey over Florida in 5

Philadelphia over Pittsburgh in 7

I deleted it because I didn't realize it was auto-load and that's super annoying for anyone who wants to open this thread.

I think it's a dick move to get all huffy and storm out on an interview session because someone asked him about something he did that was WIDELY publicized - specifically, publicized BY HIM - acting all offended that anyone would even bring it up. Of fucking course it's going to get brought up. It's the playoffs, every possible storyline the media can latch on to - even ones they fabricate just to have something to talk about - are going to be played up as much as possible. And that was a pretty low-key question, "are you expecting people to bring this up because we're in washington", he didn't ask what he thought of the Republican convention.

If you don't want to answer the question, it's pretty easy: "next question". Storming out of an interview like that is just a huge prima donna move, imo.

So we have the exact same picks, just in different amount of games, you didnt happen to revise after seeing my great insight did you know ;)

No, I was thinking about it yesterday listening to Marek vs Wyshinski.

This just in: celebrated advanced stats expert and the most insightful analyst in Canuckistan, Mr. Thomas Drance, has made his pick for the Kings - Canucks series. His analysis of the underlying numbers and matchups is detailed, thorough, unimpeachable, and... well... fuck my life.

http://canucksarmy.com/2012/4/10/canucks-v-kings-conference-quarter-final-series-preview

Excerpt:

If I didn't trust the numbers that we use on a daily basis here at Canucks Army, then I wouldn't use them so much. While it pains me to say this, I think the Canucks are going to have a very difficult time getting out of the first round. Vancouver's club is clearly elite, the problem is that L.A.'s club is pretty damn good too (despite their slow start to the season, which, inconveniently has caused them to end up inappropriately low in the playoff pecking order).

Ultimately, the Kings are the superior possession team, and show better by the best predictive metrics than the Canucks do. To make matters worse, the quality and style of their goaltending, their superior penalty-killing, and their overall team size makes them a particularly tough matchup for Vancouver's club.

While we can always hope for the best, and certainly I hope that I've misread the tea leaves here, based on the underlying numbers and the way the Kings pulverized the Canucks during the season series, I'm going to have to take the Kings to triumph in six over the Canucks.

I know man, i was just giving you a hard time.

While he makes a good point, and this is probably one of the most even 1 vs. 8 matchups I can recall in recent history either team could still take this.

The thing is, that even if LA does has superior goaltending and a better pk/defense this series is gonna be won by the 3rd and 4th lines. Something which I believe we have far superior to LA.
Our 3rd line of Higgins-Pahlsson-Hansen is amazing, good speed, solid defensively, can score goals, play physical, and can annoy the shit out of you.
If Danny does play and Lappy centres the 4th line, that is unreal, best 4th line centre in the game imo and with wingers like Manny/Bitz/Kassian and more they are extremely tough to play against.

If Danny does not come back this series is gonna be very tough to win but still winnable, without him it will be easier, but still very, very tough.

I just want the games to start already, i can't take all this waiting.

Exactly what I'm hoping for..if the pens slide through relatively unscathed from pittsburgh I think they will take it from boston in 7 games

I dont think boston will have much of a hard time against the caps, the only player i'm really worried about getting hot and being a pain in the ass is semin. Chara proved throughout the regular series that he is more than capable of shutting down ovi especially in the shit year he is having

Pens scare the shit out of me though..I'm gonna be rooting hard for philly to at least wear down the pens over 7

meh, haters gonna hate.

that said, my biases have made half of my decisions for me (i.e., sharks fan, sens fan, jersey hater and boston hater). in reality, jersey and boston will most likely win their series, but i feel content with my other predictions.

Not in the conventional sense, nope. Mine's more of an NHL SEASON beard. I did the playoff beard by the rules last year and the year before. Didn't fully work out. This go-around, i'm going a little more extreme just as an experiment. Maybe if my beard's bigger, the Sharks will go deeper?

Omg i know, last year I would do the exact same thing on gamedays, and if we lost I would try to find out what thing i did differently, even if it was the smallest thing.

however, one tradition that is always the same is drinking beer, can't watch hockey without out. sadly im gonna be an alcoholic and be showing up to my 9am classes a little tipsy for the 2 months (hopefully)

Yeah, a lot of the guys over at Nucks Misconduct are shaking in their boots too.

LA could be your Anaheim 09 or Edmonton 06 very easily. Vancouver relies far too often on Power Play goals, and LA doesn't give up much in the way of Power Play Goals - especially in the playoffs. Last year, the Sharks couldn't for the life of them find a way to score on even the most wide open 5-3. They had to resort to opportune play and a ridiculous game 3 comeback in order to win that series - and that Kings team is a step behind this one when it comes to talent, physicality, and grit.

If LA finds a way to step up the scoring, and puts 3 in the net or more on a regular basis, then Vancouver wont be the only team having to worry about an 'upset' this postseason. That said, if LA gets too complacent with leads, and starts playing sloppy, then Vancouver could absolutely crush them in a demoralizing comeback or two. I want to say that LA will give up at least one 2 goal lead this playoff that will cause them to lose 2 games in a row. before they regain their heads.
Have a nice day, Bluename.

Fuck the system, Ottawa in 4.

Nah but really I'm actually exactly on par with Sean's picks, WITH ONE EXCEPTION. The Red Wings. They're fucking good, they have super deep scoring, a good goalie, they're well coached and ALWAYS bring their best in the playoffs. I can't go against them, and they are also my pick to win it all.

In other news, draft lottery tonight. I don't really care either.

I don't see how you could pick the Wings over the Preds that easily. Yeah, the wings will outchance and likely outscore them with 5 on 5 play - and don't give u enough penalties to make the power play a reliable means of scoring for Nashville - but the Preds are one of those teams that, if their defense and goaltending is playing even nearly at their potential, they won't allow more than 2 goals in any game.

Nashville has a bit more speed I feel, and isn't exactly inexperienced by any means.

I feel that this series almost comes down to how well Rinne handles the onslaught of 5 on 5 possession pressure the wings will likely deliver. I can definitely see Rinne stealing a game or 2 on his own, and the Preds scrapping for another while Howard brainfarts one away.

It's extremely close, but Nashville is too sexy for me not to pick right now.

Hilarious, NHL. Pretty typical of what the League is interested in hyping; 4 LA Kings highlights in their official playoff pump up video, 0 Canucks highlights. That's fine; we make our own.

this is what too many people are saying, everyone always seems to toss the blueshirts aside but this year we really have a great, different team.

If we had a good powerplay, we'd be the best team hands down.
