147 pages in the 2010-11 Thread. Here start's next season.

Now the season's over, Boston has the cup for the summer, but it's all up for grabs come autumn. Bump it through the slow summer months as transactions occur

Oh, and to start some tradition: LOL @ Anaheim.

Who's winning the cup next?
Have a nice day, Bluename.

Habs game tonight.

If they lose against the Panthers, I'm legit gonna sell my tickets haha.. It's 100% impossible for them to be in the playoffs right?

Not 100% yet. I think they have one or two games left to lose. You should still go see the game though.

Sens won again, 5-2. Expected but good to see it happen. I can't see us catching Boston though, especially now that Anderson is gone for awhile.

Toronto sucks.

There's a bigger chance that Rocket Richard skates out of his grave than Montreal makes the playoffs. Not going to happen...

I would still go watch the game if I were you.

I was at the Wild-Sharks game tonight. Sick game! and its good to see us winning a little more, but I think the hole is a little deep for us to climb out of. Maybe the guys we gained from the Zidlicky trade can help us rally to the 7th or 8th seed.

TBA
Mike Connelly, Jaime MgGinn and Michael Sgarbossa

McGinn is having a strong season, but might be peaking out on his value here... Connelly and Sgarbossa are good prospects - especially Sgarbossa...

I like this trade due to the fact that Galiardi plays strong every shift, brings speed and good PK abilities to the fold... and after seeing him 2 years ago during the playoffs, thought he was going to be untouchable in Colorado for a while - I'm fuckin stoked if he plays to his potential. Winnik is a solid 2 way 3rd liner who has great work ethic, and has improved drastically since his phoenix days so I hear.

2 NHL solid guys with potential + 7th rnder for 1 NHL guy with some potential and 2 prospects? I'll take that any day.

Have a nice day, Bluename.

Sami Pahlsson to Vancovuer for 2 fourth rounders.
While hes not quite the same player he was for Anaheim a few years ago on their cup run i think he can still bring some grit to the third or fourth line depending on where they slot him.
I don't know too much about him but from what ive heard he's a pretty good faceoff man, and solid defensively.

Just adding more depth, so i'm happy without giving up any players. Hopefully he should fit into the dressing room pretty well considering he knows the Sedins back from MoDo

But most importantly Schneids is still here, though he'll prob be dealt at the draft imo

Now, I like Kassian. But what the hell was Gillis thinking. Hodgson is just... future captain in the NHL.

FUCK, i really don't know what to think right now.
Being home atm i was talking to my mum about how i like the Pahlsson pick up and happy how Hodgson won't get traded, then she runs into my room to tell me this WTF !!!

Gillis i have always trusted you but atm i don't know what to make of this. Cody has been getting better and better all year and proving he will be an amazing player in this league with captain material written all over him.

From a personal perspective i hate this trade, Cody was one of my favourites so im shocked, especially after we put so much effort and time into grooming him and bringing him along slowly only to trade him away.

I know Kassian is a good player and BIG guy, i just don't know what to think right now :(

I don't agree with the Hodgson deal, or the Brian Lee deal. Matt Gilroy is a decent offensive defensemen, who can play a regular shift, but we DONT NEED THAT. What was very useful for Ottawa was having a young, steady, cheap shutdown defenseman in Brian Lee. Shit.

But we got Ben Bishop, he could easily end up as a #1 goalie, so i'm optimistic there.

Deadline day was boring.

You should be. The dude might be your Yzerman. Just want to point out to everybody that the year John Tavares absolutely lit up the WJHC, he wasn't the leading scorer. Hodgson was.

Basically, this deal was the right move if and only if the Canucks win the cup as a result. MGGM just put a ton of pressure on himself.

Alright ive cooled down a litte, while from a personal perspective still not the biggest fan, as im a huge Hodgson supporter, this trade does make a bit of sense, for both teams.

Vancouver gets Kassian whose a big guy, whose not afraid to drop em and has some skill to go a long with it. Apparently his favourite player is Bertuzzi and if he can get to his level when Bert was in his prime here in Vancouver I will be more then happy.
We also got Marc-Andre Gragnani, who to be honest i had never heard of him. It looks like he has some offensive capabilities as last year he averaged about a ppg in the AHL. but the stat that really stands out for me is that he is a +10 this year on Buffalo. Currently on 1 of 4 to be a positive on that team with the next best being a +3. So hopefully he can provide some offense while still maintaining his strong defensive play.

Buffalo gets Cody, who will be a great player in this league, but honestly being a centre and sitting behind Sedin and Kesler he wasn't going to get top 6 minutes consistently in Vancouver. So for Cody, while it may hurt to leave he is getting a great opportunity to become the player he is capable of being and i wish him all the best and will continue to be a huge supporter.
Buffalo also gets Sulzer who is not as good as Gragnani from what i can tell

Wild traded Nick Shultz to Edmonton for Tom Gilbert. I was surprised that we traded Shultz since he's been with the team so long and is so well liked, but I think Gilbert will bring a little more offense to the team which is what we need.

It's REALLY funny to see how many Sharks fans get pissed off about the trade... Too many of them get all up in shit over prospects, but I'm personally more interested in NHL players who can play well.

McGinn (McGnyan as he's known to Sharks fans) is having a bit of a breakout season and it's cool to see, but he's SUUUPER one dimensional, and I don't see him bein more than a 3rd liner. Lots of people have become stoked on him recently, but I REALLY don't see him being what many people think...

Scgarbossa is a good prospect, and its sorta eating me that we gave him up, but he's YEARS from hitting the NHL level if he even does... his name is badass though, and he had a great training camp with the team... but I don't have high enough hopes for prospects that are as small as he is, fitting in with a team like the Sharks. I see him as becoming another Ben Ferriero...

As for Galiardi? I feel like he's got pretty good size, and put on lots of muscle over last summer. He's a great skater and has fantastic work ethic. He's a good defender and is fifth on the team in PK time. He's got good hands and eyes and positions himself well in front of the net. He digs pucks out, and he can be a bit of a pesty agitator - getting guys off their games. He plays center and wing equally well from what I've seen. He does have a pretty horrendous shot, and can derp out from time to time, but he's a great 3rd liner with 2nd line potential for sure. He burned us a few times in the playoffs in 2010... scared me good at the time.

Danial Winnik? well... He's kinda aloof after the whistle and doesnt hit much, which is slightly confounding i'm sure to colorado fans, and he has lapses in concentration like anyone else - especially on offense where he does some stupid shit with scoring chances. But he's a big dude who is a great defender and penalty killer. Something I'm pretty stoked on. The Sharks biggest need is a strong lower line defensive forward to help shut shit down. As retarded as he is on offense, his defense on the 3rd and 4th lines will be highly cherished.

...I'm pretty stoked on it.

Have a nice day, Bluename.

Just wait... Galiardi becomes a 50 point scorer on the regular, and McGinn relapses to what he was before this year.

...Besides the (in my opinion) untouchables on the team (Marleau, Burns, Thornton, Boyle, Pavelski, Couture) anyone else is pretty much fair game. I was stupid happy about the Burns trade this last offseason while so many fans who pick favourites wept over Setoguchi - who's a 40-50 point scorer at most. Something Burns can do from the blueline while providing solid defensive support - something we need a lot more than another one way winger like Seto or McGinn.

Gragnani is okay, but he makes A LOT of mistakes, a lot of giveaways usually end up resulting in goals.

So confused on how to feel about the Hodgson trade.

Clear that the Canucks management didn't see him being a third line center for the future which is odd as he's been playing there well and helping Higgins/Hansen score. However it was also clear he would never bump Henrik or Kesler from their 1C/2C position.

But its hard not to like the kid and if he was ok with 3rd line minutes I don't really see the issue.

Kassian is obviously brought in for grit/size....thing is I don't see him being ready for this year's playoffs so is this more a move for next year?

Well thats to be expected a little, he's still pretty young.
Any chance you can tell me what pairing he was on at Buffalo?
And if he gives up the puck a lot, and is still a +10 on Buffalo, thats still pretty good and something he can definitely work on
Joy is the response of a lover receiving what he loves. This is the joy we feel when skiing powder... This overflowing gratitude is what produces the absolutely stupid, silly grins that we always flash at one another at the bottom of a powder run. We all agree that we never see these grins anywhere else in life.

I see it definitely more of a move for future, but at the same time, what with the Canucks overwhelming amount of Centers, I think they wanted to get a big, tough, physical, gritty dude who could wreck shit, and was perhaps closer to playing in the NHL. I look at the Canucks and I don't think 'physical force' necessarily... so it might be an effort to balance everything out.

in the end, I don't see the trade effecting anything this season...

Gragnani is Chris Tanev. He has the potential to be really really good. But he's not ready now. Also we already had Chris Tanev so why did we need another one of him? If he played right side and could fill in there when Salo inevitably gets hurt, I could see it... but he doesn't. It's like Gillis is building for a 2014 cup run. Which sort of makes sense since it's the last year for the Sedins on their current deal and hence the last year of our cup window probably. But Burrows and Edler are up next year which means raises for both of them. You pretty much have to go for it ASAP.

Basically, I don't see either of these guys making the roster before next year. And we traded a guy who was at all star weekend for them. It might end up being a good deal down the road but for a cup contender it makes less than zero sense.

How do you figure? Hodgson is an offensive force, or was, for the Canucks. He was clutch. GWG against Chicago in the 3rd period when he sprung out on a breakaway, 2 goals in the game of the season against the Bruins, and more recently tied the game in the 3rd period vs. the Wings in the game we end up breaking the streak in. I've been saying all afternoon, if you're in OT in game 6 of the West final, it's very possible that Hodgson scores the game winner. It's not possible that Kassian does if he's playing in the AHL.

If he HAD to trade Hodgson to begin with i would rather it be for a star rental player than these guys. Again it's just my opinion but I was severely disappointed when I heard about the trade this afternoon

Alright, I'll try to break down the Vancouver - Buffalo trade now that my emotions have simmered.

Gillis is a proactive GM who has displayed a clear pattern of improving the team with bold moves at the trade deadline. He is obviously aided by a very extensive scouting network and counsel which has paid off as Higgins, Lapierre and Booth all look like great trades that we clearly won.

Alain Vigneault is a meticulous coach who clearly has a vision of what he wants his team to be from the top to the bottom. Cody Hodgson has for the most part been forced upon him because we drafted him so high. However, his role as a third line center (regardless of success) is not what Alain Vigneault desires.

Needless to say between the pro-activeness of Gillis and Vigneault's desire to have a third line that meets his vision/needs something was bound to happen. Trading for Sami Pahlsson should have tipped us off as that lead to the Canucks having Lapierre, Pahlsson and Malhotra as 3rd/4th line centers.

So....where does this get us?

Hodgson was essentially traded for the future and the present.

Confusing I know but here are the reasons why in order of importance:

1) Vigneault favors our secondary scoring coming from Kesler and the 2nd line.

With Hodgson on the team Vigneault was forced to use the 2nd line in more defensive situations. Unfortunately this meant Kesler has seen his scoring drop which while not such a big deal in the regular seasons can't happen in the playoffs.

The likelihood of Kesler's line scoring consistently in the playoffs is far higher than that of Hodgson's. Further, Vigneault believes our top 2 lines and defenseman can score enough goals if we have solid checking lines to free them up. Without solid checking lines the Canucks ability to get the Sedins/Kesler up against 2nd/3rd pairing D's is marginalized.

2) Hodgson would have to wait 4+ years to replace Henrik/Kesler as a 2nd line center, or to get minutes close to that.

This is not a feasible situation considering Hodgson would have to be resigned during this period and the first two centers are locked up.

3) If Kassian comes good he is rarer than Hodgson.

Larger, skilled power forwards are by far the most coveted player in the league. While Hodgson is demonstrating he can play in the league he isn't unique....seriously, there are 130 players in the league with more points than him.

Shit - all this without mention of Gragani

Congrats on trading away one of the best young players in the league and acquiring one of the stupidest people in the NHL who struggles to skate and suffers from extreme laziness...

Enjoy your new AHL goon, lol...

This is nonsense - there are like 2 rookies with more points than him. No one else in his rookie class has a shot like that. He's more defensively responsible than RNH. I can't speak for Henrique because I don't watch him enough. Meanwhile Kassian isn't rare - there are plenty of big strong guys who can score at the AHL level. He hasn't shown he can do it in the NHL. That's the bottom line.

I also think people like Klazo are being a bit dramatic, because the dude actually does have all the TOOLS to be a top 6 powerforward a la Bertuzzi. He has that upside and his physical growth is cause for optimism on that point. It's potential top 6 centre for potential top 6 winger. But Kassian's still a prospect. Cody's a player. Lots of players never reach that potential in the pro game. Evaluating the trade by comparing their upsides is dumb.

All I can say is that Jordan Schroeder, Anton Rodin and Nicklas Jensen just got a lot more pressure put on them.
