I've been wanting to get into some film stuff lately so I'm thinking about buying a Canon AE-1 Program with the stock 50mm f/1.8 from a guy on craigslist for $50. Would this be a good film camera to start with? I've read some reviews and it looks pretty good to me. I'm suppose to meet with the guy later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with it actually. It seems to be doing the rounds on Tumblr without any input from me. Trying to track it's progress and getting pissed off with the lack of tracking tools.

Here's another shot from the same roll

sorry for this bump, but i just recently got into Film, becuase i was at goodwill, and i saw a canon eos 2000 with a canon 75-300 and a canon 28-80 with two 2x tele extenders so i picked that bitch up, for 50, and its fully working and everything, but im yet to develop my first roll, but i was shooting with ektar 100, and i was just wondering if this was a fairly good film? and what some good films are? along with where can i find some used old eos mount lenses, i looked at the camera store by me(dodd Camera) and they had no eos mounts...

Ektar is a very, very good film if you want good colour and smooth, smooth film.

It's very unforgiving in terms of exposure though, so maybe not the best for a beginner.

craigslist is always a good bet, just make sure you test out the lenses/visually inspect them before you buy

I've heard it's about as forgiving as slide...

Got 3 rolls of Ektar, and 2 rolls of Fuji Pro 400H coming hopefully within the next couple days. I'll have to add it to my collection in the fridge...

I've only shot a few rolls of ektar, it's definitely comparable to slide in terms of latitude.  Still a nice film under the right light.

Yeah I don't think ektar is as forgiving as other print films in terms of exposure latitude. But the colors and grain are great. Especially for scanning. I've yet to have any real darkroom prints made from it.

Yeah, I saw a scan of some Ektar done at around 4600 DPI, you can't see the grain at that size, which is pretty awesome if you like ultra smooth shots.

Hopefully I get mine soon, I'll try overexposing it by half a stop or so to get some extra saturation out of it.

Was that with a polarizer and red filter or something? The sky is straight black. Pretty gnarly contrast with the mountain though.

I started shooting film on a Leica M6 not too long ago.
Now I'm gonna start developing my own negatives too!
Shooting film, for me, has something that digital does'nt. It's kinda hard to explain.

Keh.com? Not sure how much they go for on ebay, but usually the prices are decent on there, they're legit although if you're in canada or somewhere shipping might get you. Their bgn condition stuff is usually very nice too.

Maybe these are what you're looking for?

I wouldn't say any photo is better because of the camera it was shot on, but each definitely has its strengths. Even after using a Mamiya DM22, my Toyo 45 GII is still my favorite camera. Digital has a long way to go before it can do the things film does, but at the same time there are a number of things film will never be able to do as well as digital.

And those photos are great!
