Sooo, this upload is far too big for the "Post Your Best Photography" thread, so I'm giving myself my own. These were all shot at what is generally regarded as Vancouver's best thai restaurant, Maenam (http://www.maenam.ca). This was my first time shooting in a commercial kitchen and it was a bit unforgiving; super fast paced (no time for focusing, adjustments, poses, etc), hot, low light (all shot around 4000iso hence many black and whites and split tones to deal with the grain), confined spaces, and visual mess. I'll be shooting in at least one more kitchen this summer, so I'm definitely looking for some feedback, what kind of shots you'd like to see more of, what you liked, what I'm doing too much of, and what you might try. This shoot is admittedly portrait heavy because they were shot as keepsakes for a friend who works there and will be leaving soon. That said, here comes a huge row of images in no particular order (just numbered for discussions sake), as always click for quality or check the whole set on my flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/31482950@N08/sets/72157623615246417/

^^ Im not so sure these could be considered conceptual photographs??

I hit the back button and well fuck  Im not re writing all of that. Basically what I wrote was that you have to many, no on can expect an honest critique with a series this large, they will only get an overall critique.  And my overall critique.. you shot in a kitchen. There are too many static shots that are overbearing the better ones (4,8,9,10,11,16, 20 are all people just staring off into space) I think you need to cut out atleast 1/2 to 3/4ths of the images. I dont think you did bad, but what you posted looks like a first round cut instead of a final cut, which maybe it is? But the series could be  a lot strong with less images.

word, wasn't looking for a shot by shot critique because it does me no good since there is no possibility of a reshoot. Lookin more for an overall thing as I shoot in more kitchens. Its fully first round, tryin to see if any images stick out to people and if others are downright unpleasant.

some pictures, 1, 2, 8, 9 & 11, had faces and partial bodies, but with the ends of arms cut off.
I feel like you should try to focus more on just the face, or the whole body.
cutting off the arms just made me wonder what was going on out of frame, and didn't give context to the face. If any of that made sense.
But some good shots in there for sure

yeah, I was noticing this more and more as I went through post. I think the main issue here was the constant on-the-fly composition combined with confined spaces. I couldn't ask them all to stop what they were doing so i could get the shot lined up. Next time though I guess I will either have to be more directive or really pick and choose my moments rather than being so snap happy.

The quantity was admittedly excessive but I wanted to show all of what I did, good and bad, so that people could suggest (in a broad sense, rather than shot by shot) whats going well and whats going poorly.

normally an older Canon 20d but this was shot with a 5dmkII which was slightly unfamiliar and may have been the cause of some of the hastier compositions.

kitchen in general... these were shot as a favor for my friend (the wee asian girl) who is leaving Vancouver soon and wanted some work photos. So I tried to capture her and her coworkers in a relatively natural way with a slight focus on her and the exec. chef (guy in the top photo).

I won't lie, I don't know much about photography, but I do know what I like in terms of general framing and composition, so I'll give my two cents either way...

Here's the ones I like: 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 24, 25

Now in terms of photography lingo and techy stuff, I honestly can't get very deep into why I like these pictures apart from the rest.  I guess they just appeal to me more.  What I do see in them, however, that I don't see in others is a representation how the kitchen works.  Its a moment in time that seems to fit perfectly in with the atmosphere you are trying to capture.

Take 3 for example.  You have lots going on, and its a generally busy photo, but in the center of it all is that small plate that's being assembled piece by piece.  It is the star of the show and the chef's main focus, and you represent that well with both your lighting, framing, and depth of field.  I think this was my favorite one.

You can see things like this in most of the ones I listed above (I think - I'm not going to go check each or go over each...).  However you can see that in others that presence is not there.  Take 1 for example.  In this photo, you can see the chef, his concentration, and a little bit of the busy atmosphere (by the pieces of other people on the shot), but you cannot see what he is doing nor can you get a feel for the overall feeling.  This shot doesn't do anything for me.

Contrast this with 8.  In 8, you have good depth of field, and the vig/spotlight effect gives it a sense of focus, which is reflected through your subject.  Your subject is concentrating on his work, and your picture captures that.

Basically, what I like to see is a representation of what is going on in the kitchen.  If you can, through your photos, reflect the atmosphere of the kitchen, whether it be hustle bustle or slow and precise, then you've been successful.

OP: "If you suddenly skied off a huge fuckin cliff and you only had time to throw one last trick before you died, what would it be?"

No worries man, anytime.  It helps me too, to put down what I actually like to see in a frame.  Good stuff, keep it up - be sure to post your new stuff as it comes, I would love to see it.
