As all of us know, it is very important to know how to use/maintain your ski equipment, so my hope for this thread is to have everyone post videos or picture tutorials on how to do various forms of ski maintenance, whether it's adjusting bindings, waxing skis, dulling edges, anything, but just so you know where to look when you have basic questions about this sort of thing

I'll put 2 videos in the OP:

How to Take Apart/Bend FKS
by me

FKS from Alex Berner on Vimeo.

How to Wax Your Skis
by mrstskier

How to Wax skis from Thomas O'Connell on Vimeo.

Next up just a few tips:

When you get home from skiing you should do 3 things:
1. take your skis inside and leave them there
2. wipe your bases and edges with a cloth or rag
3. pull your skis apart and lean them against a wall with the bases sticking up

Now it's your turn, post tips, stories, tutorials, anything relating to ski maintenance because it can greatly increase the life and performance of your gear

**DISCLAIMER**
A LOT OF THESE THINGS REQUIRE BASIC SHOP SKILL, PROPER TOOLS, AND EXPERIENCE. DO EVERYTHING AT YOUR OWN RISK AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE ABLE TO EXECUTE ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT PROCESSES. THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU RISK THE LIFE OF YOUR GEAR AND MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING

This goes for advice giving as well, make sure you possess knowledge of the subject you're providing advice for because it can jeopardize people's safety if you give them false tips. So either make sure you know what you're saying or put in your post that you're just kinda guessing

"People always ask me, 'is it worth it, getting hurt that much?' and the answer is yes, I would do it all over again, have six more season ending injuries in the next 10 years to keep doing what we get to do, there's nothing better than sliding down snow and flying through the air"

Any wax will do provided its for the right temp. Fluoro carbons (FL) work the best. And make sure you melt it in with an iron and scrape it off. It lasts much longer than a rub on wax. I like One Ball Jay personally.

I use the all temp stuff and havent found an issue with it at all yet. It seems like im just as fast as everyone else...

but i may get like 2 different waxes that are specific temp just to see. does anyone know if it will even make that big of a difference?

if you're skiing alone you won't notice it, but if you're cruising with buddies and have several traversing sections or flat parts you'll see immediately who has waxed their planks properly ....

So I'm getting my new skis in a few days, so I'm going to have to prep some new skis soon... And I did some reading, and would this be a good procedure?

Hot scrape with a warm temp wax (yellow?)2-3 times until wax shavings come off clean. Then do 2-3 more coats of regular hot waxing (wax, wait 30mins or more, scrape, then brush) with the warm wax. Finally, apply a cold wax, wait for it to dry, scrape, and brush, and then use gradually warmer waxes. Finally, once I've gone up to the warmest wax I have, just scrape and brush it all again and apply my chosen wax for the day.

Anybody have suggestions for improvements for my procedure?

Thanks!

So after an pimp day of shralping pow at crystal this early season, i was pleasantly surprised to find 4 core shots, each a quarter of an inch- to half an inch in diameter. Also have a nice gouge, not to the core but on the surface about half an inch in width, an inch in length, maybe a 16th of an inch in depth. i have some alpha 2's, clear base. Should I get them repaired right away, or wait a bit knowing that i have some more early season skiing to do?

oh and any estimates of pricing for repairs?

Someone was talking about vices and supports previously in this thread. I got a photo of mine finally that I made out of wood, screws, glue and foam sheeting. These cost me about $10 and are way more simple and stable than any vice. My bench isn't usually this messy - this was after a full weekend getting my gear ready for winter.

2mm foam sheets (from eBay), and they're underneath the feet too. It's pretty grippy but rubber would have been better, like a chopped up inner tube or something.

can anyone tell me if my garage is too cold to wax my skis in right now?

its like 33 outside and like 40 ish in there and i needa wax new skis and have heard "warm and dry" many times in relation to waxing

i think ill do it anyway because theyre brand new bases and they need to be impregnated with wax but any guidance is helpful for the future

Kinda obvious but if your garage has a heater then turn it on. I'd bring my skis inside your house and get them room temp and then wax then. The warmer the bases the more wax the absorb.

You should definitely get a big plastic cover to put on your skis, just like my grandmother does for her living room:

Just go to a legit shop. Shouldn't cost anywhere near that much to get them mounted, and if u got the skis from them, it should be free!

Sounds good. Thanks for clarification mods. Disclaimer: The following should only be attempted if you a) Don't have access to a professional ski shop/jig b) if you have a very good idea what you're doing.

I just got new 2011 kung fujas and lack the equipment to tune them and all. I am wondering if it would be good for me to get some rub on wax (http://www.reliableracing.com/detail.cfm?edp=11148236) and rub that on before I go skiing. Also during the season I probably get my skis tuned for every 15 days riding. Would using a rub on wax ever few days or everyday help or is it pretty much useless?

I am wondering if it would be good for me to get some rub on wax (http://www.reliableracing.com/detail.cfm?edp=11148236) and rub that on before I go skiing. Also during the season I probably get my skis tuned for every 15 days riding. Would using a rub on wax ever few days or everyday help or is it pretty much useless?
I haven't tried rub on, but I heard it just scrapes off after a couple runs.  You could learn how to use a cork and try to cork the wax in, I don't know how to do that though, I just heard it's a decent substitute for iron.

So i have some rossi look 12's with like a 85 mm break on them i think(havent measured)

and i want to bend them to fit my ninthwards that have a waist of 111.

would this work, or even give me enough room?

Two dumb questions that had me thinking, just curious and won't stop doing it based on the answer.

1. Does transporting my skis with a Thule alter the camber?
2. Does it mess with the waxed bases (wind)?

I'll try and bend them tomorrow if i find time. they are super old, so i feel like they will break, so i think applying fire and great force will do the trick

The Life of a wanna be east coast ski bum

The Life of a wanna be east coast ski bum

Aug 25th 2010

I just got my new LINE Chronic Cryptonite skis and theses babies look and feel sick. It's only August but I am all ready to get my shred on. Now I'm looking into what bindings and boots I want to get. Since I ride Park a lot as well as all Mountain, I'm looking into the LOOK PX 12 Jib wide binding or maybe the Marker Giffon schizo 12 ski binding. As for boots I have been looking into some Full Tilts or the Salomon SPK Kreation or Pro model. Any suggestions bring em on....
