I don't know how everyone feels about this, but in my opinion ski movies as of late have included way too many urban shots/setups.

Originally it was sick; when someone cleaned a super gnarly urban rail everyone went off their rocker. But now, it's hard to get that feeling from an urban setup.

There is too many in today’s movies. You can only get horny off the same thing so many times.

Not to mention, it is probably ALOT cheaper/easier to film and urban setup. No lift tickets, no backcountry danger, no on-hill setup, just drive and drop. If you get busted, move on, nothing really lost.

What I really enjoy are the crazy park setups that rage films always grabs. Plehouse seems to try a good balance of park backcountry and urban. But when a skier bases his/her whole segment on Urban, I most definitely skip it. I think, is this really skiing? There is no snow! It starts to seem ridiculous once these things cross my mind.

I just read an interview with Michelle Parker. She says her next few segments can only be urban setups or backcountry shit, this was so that she can be on the same level as the guys.

I say, differentiate yourself. Do something crazy and completely different. Stop the URBAN SPRAWL!

I really like the way skiing is going, and yes this thread is from 2006, but his points still stand, although I disagree. I like to see everything evolving out of the park. You have people are pulling park tricks out of the controlled environment of the park, and out into the backcountry or into the streets. Watching a K-fed on a little DFD in the park vs watching somebody k-fed a Burly ass DFD in the middle of Boston is so much different. Just like I would rather see people throwing cork 7's off of a big ass BC booter than off a 90 ft perfectly sculpted jump at breck.

I see what youre trying to say but although there is no backcountry danger there is the danger of falling down cement stairs, skiing into busy streets, etc.

I know this is bad but I dont really enjoy watching backcountry skiing. all the park shoots and urban shots are what make me buy movies. when someone goes out and hits a crazy urban rail, its so sick. maybe because ive never skied in the backcountry being im from Minnesota but thats how i feel about it

I agree only to the extent that I can't fully appreciate an urban-only segment. Someone may have unreal rail skills and creativity, but it won't be THAT impressive without jump and/or backcountry shots as well.

I can agree that large segments of films that are only double/triple kink urban rails can get old...

But I'm curious about how long you've been around freestyle skiing and how much urban you've watched? Not trying to challenge your love your skiing or your enthusiasm or anything, just curious. No hate.

Because if urban is now getting old, then triple jump lines in the park should be a distant fading memory. We're reaching a point in park skiing where progression is starting to rely on the ability to build bigger jumps, and longer rails, and taller pipes, etc. Creativity is no longer the driving force, because there's kind of a rut of expected features and expected tricks. In a lot of cases, IMO, its harder to be creative when you're holding all the cards, when you can manipulate all the variables to create something exactly as you had planned in your minds eye. There have certainly been some really cool and unique FEATURES built in the park in the last few years. But tricks? Meh. All of these really awesome and unique features are met with predictable tricks. Spin faster. Flip harder. Grab more. We're progressing into a rut.

The simplest features are the ones that result in the most creative tricks. All of Andy Perry's alien wackiness? THAT takes creativity and imagination, and he does them all on flat boxes and dfd rails. Simple features require you to ride at a level where you make the feature more than it seems to the naked eye.

And the most simple features can ALWAYS be found in the urban environment. I mean fuck, a wall. Just a 12 foot wall. But maybe beside the wall, there's a concrete ledge, and below that a dumpster. All of a sudden, you have to figure it out for yourself. Wall ride to massive air over the ledge to bonk on the dumpster? Maybe a tow into the ledge; grind the ledge, hit the wall at the end, 180, back flip off onto the dumpster, 180 off to ground.

Any given episode of Nipwitz, for example, can show shit like that. Most of the features that they use in an urban environment take so much creativity, so much precision, an so much effort. And that's just in the process of setting it up. The skill and ability that it takes to hit some of those features far surpasses, IMO, the ability that it takes to a take a run through the park. It's really fucking mind-blowing.

pretty much agree. i think people go online and watch edits to see park skiing. its way more accessible and theres not much incentive to pay to watch pros ski park when ams who are just as good post up online for free. i buy the movies to see pow and urban, both of which take much more time, effort, and foresight to shoot than just an afternoon in the park.

def not cheap to film urban, just get find the spots alone is a huge expense and opportunity cost since you could be doing other things and you spend countless hours driving around looking for potential spots...you could spend an hour setting up and hitting a feature and not get a shot...

for those who film it you know how crazy hard urban is since it takes hours just to get a 3-5 second clip, I totally respect those who pump out urban segs

I love seeing the urbans, but I really do like to see the top pros doing some good old park rails as well. See what they can do on a perfect set up if you know what I mean.

Watch "BEING THERE" I thought that is pretty much what other ski movies should use as a template. It has everything.
The doc gave me some crazy ass cough syrup when I had really bad virus. Drank half the bottle and thought my piss was worth money. I refused to flush the rest of the day. -[Ed]

revolver was so much powder, which was awesome, but it got old fast. With urban, every rail it pretty different so it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time

i kind of agree. I mean i love watching urban seggys. i just love the expression of creativity that comes from the minds of the skiers and the filmers. but you are right, there is wayyy too much. If they are going to add more, at least make it on the level of JP Auclairs All I Can part. I love those long, creative urban lines

  I filmed a lot of urban skiing during december in Quebec, and I was about to go crazy, so I moved in Breck, Colorado. Now that I am here,  I asked myself, how could it be easier to get some good shots and most of all, how to shoot a lot of urban without having a mental breakdown at some point.   The five golden rules of urban (by myself)  #1 Don't call your tricks?  ?especially if you never hit the feature before. Some urban looks small and easy, but are much more harder in reality. So many time you will end up doing 270 out on a rail you were imagining yourself doing a 450 on tailpress pretzel 6 out. You are juste going to end up angry and disappointed.  #2 Be kind to your filmer, photographer, wincher? Urban is a team sport.  #3 Choose your spot/comrade You have to be realistic? some people are better then you in some kind of  setup and vice-versa.  #4 Have a plan B, C, D, E, etc?  There is so many things that can go wrong in urban, that you should always prepare many plans to be productive, have more then one idea in mind.  #5 Not rely solely on mechanics Winch, generator, spotlights? all those things can broke at any moment, so you should always carry a good ol banshee bungee/starter along with contingency plan.  I am riding mostly in Breck for the next 2 months and it will be really fun, but I feel like urban skiing will miss me a bit, this part of our sport is my favourite one to do after all I think, and it's definitely the funniest one to watch for me. Anyway, all I want to do now is a bit of park skiing and I am at the best location right now. Stay tuned, I should post a park edit soon enough. Yan.
