Set the camera up for a long exposure of the stars. I had it at f/2.8 @ 30s, 1600 ISO, and 17mm on full frame. Put on a tripod with mirror lockup and self timer. Set a flash off camera, with really low power. Jump on the trampoline, fire the flash with either a remote sync or have a buddy hit the test button when you're at the apex. Since you're moving and there is hardly any ambient light, the sensor won't see enough light coming off of me jumping around to pick up any motion blur. The only exposure it gets of me is when the flash fires, which is something like a 1/1000th duration and that's what freezes me.
Awesome! testing it soon.

And just set the focus to infinity?

Not entirely sure, actually. I think it was just a hair under.

Set the focus to however far you sill be from the camera. One easy way to do this is to put the tripod where it'll be when shooting, take the camera to where you'll be, focus on the tripod, then lock the focus and put it back on the tripod. The distance from A to B is the same as the distance from B to A, so the focus will be dead on.

@sklar: Not feeling the collage at all, it looks like you spent 2 minutes in paint. The other shot is good, I would have tried to get a bit lower with a wider lens and gotten him completely against the sky. With a fisheye you could have also shot it from the bottom of the landing.

@matt: First one is meh, doesn't do anything for me. Second one has great natural light and colour, but the composition is poor. You obviously shot it from above, it would have looked better if you'd placed the camera level with the base of the vase. Also get in tighter, get rid of that chair, and blur the the crap out of that background.

I'm feeling the exact same thing. I actually really like the first one other than that WU sticker, great natural light and colours, cutting off the tire ins't a big deal. #2 is meh, way to much sky. For #4 and #6 your subject is looking off out of the frame, it leaves the viewer wondering what he's/dog's looking at, those kinds of portraits aren't very strong. #5 doesn't do anything for me, its just a snap shot and its a weird expression. #7 is meh, its centered (Learn rule of 1/3rds) and its underexposed by a few stops. #8 is sick, great flare, could be a tiny bit more exposed.

thanks, and as for the lighthouse one i did do it with the rule of 1/3ds, i kind of liked the centred one better, but thanks, this was helpful.

Actually now that I look at it again your actually using the rule of thirds grid by placing it in the center. The spacing between the top of the frame and the top of the lighthouse and vice versa for the bottom is pretty even. If you threw a grid on top of that photo everything would line up pretty well. Its still underexposed but you can fix that in photoshop, just play with the levels.

And I prematurely hit reply... Feel free to let me know what you think! Click for larger imageClick for larger imageClick for larger imageClick for larger imageClick for larger image
I told you I'd critique these and I never did, my bad, so here it is.

#1: I really like how you have the audience members looking out at the race cars. Focus is good, but the placement of the cars between those poles is very awkward. I know thats hard to control, I just think it would have looked better if there was more distance between the two cars.

#2: Does nothing for me, the cars are stationary, not much going on, good use of depth with the railing but other than that its not a very exciting photograph.

#3: Good idea, but again, not much going on, I would have tried to get a photo of the pit crew changing a tire.

#4: I like this one, good placement of the cars, good use of the fence to add distance, its just a tiny bit under-exposed.

#5: Great photo, my favourite by far. Good use of a slower shutter to add movement. Good composure and focus is pretty much tack sharp.

Overal I think you over-edited a bit, I know you were trying to go for a film look, but the colours look very fake and un-natural. With film everything looks very natural. I posted a tutorial on how to edit to look like film in the photo cult, definitely check that out.

^to above critique.

I think you are a little off base with #2

i think its a great shot. There doesnt have to be action in the shot with the cars for it to be interesting. I took more time looking at #2 than i did with any of the other shots. It pulls your eye around really well, and to me makes for a very interesting shot. Much more interesting than the rest imo

^It has good composition for sure, I love the railing and the cars are balanced, but I'm not a car guy, so personally I don't find a photograph of two cars very interesting. I never said it was a bad photo, I just said it wasn't very exciting photo to me, in my opinion.

alright i see what you are saying.

I guess when i read your critique it was coming off as though you didnt think it was very good. Where its composition is probably my favorite.

And i am a car guy.

i agree at first look it is not the most exciting, but #2 and #3 are probably my favorites because i can imagine what is going on with the interactions with the people and the cars.

Plus i really like how #2 is composed.

I suppose that's just what I was going for. I was bored. My mind wanted there to be lots of things going on, and decided to convey complexity and an abundance of happenings.

Nice. Is this recent? I don't see many other people walking out to that end or farther when I'm out there.
About two weeks ago. I was down at that end because of where the sun was and I like what I got. More interesting than the other end I think.

Here are a few more:

1. Nice shot, maybe try to put it in b&w? and you cut off the elbow, so if you went a little bit further back and got the whole elbow in the photo i think it would be stronger.

2. Nice candid, composition is nice i like how the road is just disappearing in the bokeh.

I went out to the Missouri River near Craig, Mt yesterday to do a bit of flyfishing. it was pretty dismal and cold, though. Not a great fishing opportunity but good for taking pictures.
