Just an awesome view from skiing last saturday. Gotta love the panorama of the alps.

I like those man! The film shot with the hockey net and puck in front of it is so simple, but that's why I like it. Just for the simplicity of it.
I really like the ski shot too! I'm not so great with my knowledge of flashes, but you must have been using gels on that shot right? I definitely like how much the flash really brings out that puff of snow from him taking off the take off.
Also, I don't mean to nit pick the photo at all, or even critique it for that matter because it really is a good shot. This also isn't a critique thread, so I hope you don't mind. I just think personally that the flash underneath the rail next to the take off on the far right side is a little distracting. I really like the effect it has on the snow flying up, but if it was a tiny bit more to the right, I think you wouldn't get that bright ball of light on the side and it wouldn't be as distracting. That's just what I noticed when I looked at it. It's not a big deal at all though, and I hope you don't mind me mentioning it.

I haven't taken a lot of shots lately because I've been skiing so much, but I definitely will today! I'll post them later if I get the chance.

Appreciate the feedback and critique! I was only using a single flash (without a gel) fired off remotly using a trigger system. I had the flash pointed up at the rider in the air set to 85mm at I believe 1/8 +3 power so i could get the light to focus mainly on just the rider. all of the other light is from flood lights that we were using to see the rail coming into it and for filming on video cam. Agreed on how that one light is a little distracting but I was quite satisfied with the rest of the shot, I suppose a quick fix in photoshop could change that though!

No problem! I saw the orange hue to the fill light and thought you might have been using a gel, my bad I just wondered because it looks really cool.
The shot really is awesome. I was just nit-picking that little light thing, it doesn't take away from how awesome the shot is at all though. You could always run it through photoshop just to see if it makes a difference but it really doesn't need to be changed at all.

I really haven't shot too much skiing myself, but for me I found that it was hard enough to frame up the shot (especially at night) and to make sure my focus was on point too. (the focus issue was only at night)
Do you have any tips that might make it a little easier? Thanks man.

Might have to run it through photoshop to see how much better I could possibly make it, and I was gonna rate you at 10/10 but you were already there haha so +real life karma

Framing at night is difficult but I find taking a few test shots is the best way to find your preferred angle, also focusing can be very difficult, the lens that I use primarily for all my urban is manual focus so it usually takes a few shots to perfect the focus but after that I just leave it unless I'm switching angles, position, etc.. I recommend using auto to find the exact spot and then switching it to manual so that your focus is more consistent. Hopefully I helped answer your question but if not I'll try to clear it up better.

I went to my schools alpine team's race today and took some shots.  It was my first time shooting ski racing so it was a little tricky to get a hold of.  I didn't want to post all of them because there are a lot.  The rest of them can all be found here: http://http://www.flickr.com/photos/62572054@N05/sets/72157629071504863/

Get a somewhat powerful flashlight and have someone stand approximately where you want your subject in the frame and shine the flashlight on them while you set your focus. That is the best solution I have found so far. Anybody else have some tips for setting focus at night?

Thanks a bunch for the help guys. That's what I had been doing, and I figured that was the only way to do it, with the flashlight. I just wondered if anyone had any other way to do it, but it seems like that would be the only way to do it. It's pretty easy to begin with anyways though. Would you recommend tri-poding my camera, so then I could just lock in focus and it would be all set up?

kelly, this is where we differ. see you're about the drugs, im all about just smackin the bitch in the face with a baseball bat and dragging her up the stairs. in the end, its cheaper, and does about the same amount of damage to her body. -asian_allen$
